Crisis at Bayfront Charter High
You're a pretty good writer. I bet you could also be an excellent editor and convince several people to write chapters on different segments of the problem. And then have forums somewhere in the mix, so that all citizens have a chance to become aware of what is going on!— February 18, 2016 2:30 p.m.
Last Call: Outside Mullingar and Ragtime
I hope anyone who can will go see "Outside Mullingar". John Patrick Shanley is a gifted writer, with the ability to use humor in ways few can. Most likely I will not be able to see "Ragtime", but it sounds like a great show.— February 18, 2016 2:25 p.m.
Crisis at Bayfront Charter High
I must agree with those parents of students in Chula Vista Elementary School District who are questioning these charters. Why should their dollars be depleted so that a middle school and a high school can be operated under the aegis of CVESD? It is part of that war for the educational dollar that started when Ed Brand made his not-so-stellar return to Sweetwater UHSD. And there is an opportunistic element, as charter schools pay well for the administration and sometimes hire those with no experience, or little experience. The new hires may be enthusiastic, and they may also be the sort who sign on with Teach For America for their two year stint so that their resume is buffed up for the next step. Nothing wrong with that--except the schools can end up with very inexperienced teachers as they move on. With the lack of oversight in the charter schools, there can be a lack of continuity of education. Who would ever know? Can the young students tell when a part of their education is missing? How could they? They didn't know what they were entitled to in the first place. Yes, time to rein in charter schools. Is there now a reason that this middle and high school couldn't be transferred from CVESD to Sweetwater UHSD? Wouldn't that make sense?— February 18, 2016 2:14 p.m.
City attorney’s sex talk
Perhaps SD City Attorney is such a thankless task that more balanced candidates decide not to run? Heaven help us.— February 18, 2016 7:58 a.m.
Why half of San Diego’s bees are gone
Thanks for this good article on a very complex issue, Don. I would like to mention that the documentary "More Than Honey" from 2012 is very much worth watching. The world is definitely not out of the woods yet with regard to the collapse of hives. In Hawaii, it has been noticed that a native species on the Big Island that dwells in cliffs of volcanic rock has been affected by a nearby cell phone tower--so that the bees get disoriented and end up drowning. There are many reasons that bee colonies are struggling, and those who think the problem has been solved should realize how interdependent life is.— February 18, 2016 7:16 a.m.
SDG&E seeks social journalist
When I first saw this, I was sure it was a Walter Mencken piece. But no! Must be that life imitating art thing again.— February 18, 2016 6:28 a.m.
Sense of mistrust at Southwestern Community College
It is a crazy world when those who are in the position to oversee and guide do not act, but sit in place, mouthing platitudes, trying to placate and smile away the crumbling disaster they have helped to create.— February 18, 2016 6:22 a.m.
Hammering away on that mall-crazy Carlsbad City Council
I guess the civic leaders in Carlsbad who are in favor of the mall have been bought out enough that they can quickly leave town if this goes forward? Cash only, full speed ahead?— February 17, 2016 1:09 p.m.
Sense of mistrust at Southwestern Community College
Although some might consider what I have to say almost paranoid, I have to wonder if at some level the word went out to all sorts of politicians that it was open season on public education, no holds barred. That's about the only explanation I can come up with for the extreme degree of non-attention to the very issues the County Board of Education is supposed to guide, support and lead. Something along the lines of a Citizen's Group for the Enforcement of Sound Decision-Making might be called in to play--it couldn't hurt. Task force, anyone?— February 16, 2016 11:44 a.m.
Sense of mistrust at Southwestern Community College
Fair enough! I do wish that some of the energy and effort that the AACJC demonstrates could be transferred to the San Diego County Board of Education, as that is the most lackluster, hopeless bunch of sitting bureaucrats who do absolutely as little as they can possibly do (and still hold a job) as I have ever seen. Not to mention all the conflict of interest schemes that are allowed to continue. What board inspects them?— February 16, 2016 6:25 a.m.
