Bocelli is NOT an Opera Singer
I have always thought that Boccelli had a beautiful voice, but I agree he is not an opera singer and Nessun dorma clearly overtaxes his voice. In the old days, he would have been an excellent radio tenor.— December 14, 2010 1:21 p.m.
Four Notes
The YouTube performance is gorgeous. Thanks for discussing this impromptu.— December 14, 2010 1:11 p.m.
Grand Canyon
I haven't heard anyone discuss The Grand Canyon Suite in years. I thought it had been consigned to the dustbin of forgotten Americana. It was probably the first piece of "classical" music I ever experienced. Enjoyed the article.— November 14, 2010 4:25 p.m.
The Beast with Two Backs
Don't throw out the Germans! The opening music of Rosenkavalier is clearly R. Strauss's simulation of sexual intercourse, and when the curtain rises, the Marschallin and her lover have clearly been "doing it" and are in bed together. Also, the second act love music in Wagner's Tristan and Isolde is overwhelmingly sensual. Also, while I wouldn't call it "sexy" music, Johann Strauss's "Chacun a son gout" in Fledermaus is certainly suggestive.— November 11, 2010 11:28 a.m.
The Children
Dramatic voices take an especially long time to develop. Some heldentenors don't really reach their prime until their mid-forties.— November 11, 2010 11:11 a.m.
Operatic Requiem
Btw, whenever I try to play the posted YouTubes, my computer always says: "an error occurred, please try later." It does not happen when I access YouTube directly. You know of any reason for this?— November 11, 2010 11:08 a.m.
Operatic Requiem
Verdi's Requiem is, indeed, magnificent. It makes me regret that Verdi did write more operas between Aida and Otello. Bill Smith— November 11, 2010 10:56 a.m.
