They are actually members of the California National Guard, which is a separate military organization. Casillas is a Mexican national and may have joined the military to assist in becoming a U.S. citizen. Reyes allegedly told agents that the pistol had been used "to do a job" in Tijuana. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, they were told some of the guns bought in Texas had their serial numbers removed or replaced with fake ones because they had been stolen or used in a crime. Nuclear plant could produce fresh water, say scientists
This is the same Art Robinson who co-founded the Pauling Institute and ran for Congress multiple times getting his butt kicked each time,and is a proponent of building new nuclear power plants, saying nuclear power is "inexpensive, clean, and safe." Several years ago the OCR published a report that found radiation levels were 16 times higher than allowed in drinking water in groundwater beneath Unit 1 at San Onofre. Robinson's response was that it was unfortunate that this water under San Onofre is being wasted because we could use it to enhance our drinking water here and it would "hormetically enhance" our resistance to degenerative diseases. Yeah , so this is no surprise coming from him. I believe he received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from UCSD Now there's a guy who represents his old school well.— April 16, 2015 11:49 a.m.

don bauder I try to stay away from refined sugar as much as possible, but one of the things I do enjoy on occasion are homemade almond shortbread cookies. I make them myself, from my grandmother's recipe. I can't remember the last time I used almonds that were not already shelled. And while almonds are mechanically harvested, as I said, it seems to me that if 32K jobs, about 30% of the total jobs, are just in handling, hulling and shelling, well, that seems kinda labor intensive to me. Compare that to strawberries, whose 40,000 acres typically require 1.5 to two workers per acre to pick each field multiple times.— April 16, 2015 11:31 a.m.

This has been around for quite awhile. The idea is to take part of southern Roegon and Northern Ca. and secede to for the state of Jefferson.A handful of counties have informed the Sect of State of their declarations for independence from the state and I think that one county actually has succession vote scheduled next year. Personally, I like Tim Draper's idea of dividing California into six smaller states much better.— April 16, 2015 9:02 a.m.

I read a report that used the same figure. I don't know that almonds are less labor-intensive than other crops. The report broke down the jobs total: "Almond growing is responsible for about 21,000 direct farm jobs. In total, including indirect and induced effects, almond growing accounts for more than 68,000 jobs, handling for nearly 27,000 jobs, hulling and shelling for more than 5,000 jobs, and manufacturing for more than 3,000 jobs." I think that 32k jobs just for handling, hulling and shelling sounds kinda labor intensive to me.— April 16, 2015 8:48 a.m.

Perhaps we should place limits on exported nuts. There certainly seem to be enough of them in California already, especially in the government. Maybe some of the excess almonds and pistachios could be given to the poor. who are in need of good nutrition. That would seem to be a better choice than Gweneth's 6 limes.— April 16, 2015 8:37 a.m.

anon92107 Thank you for illustrating my point so eloquently. The true fact of life here is that the point of view you profess in this, and in many, if not most, of your posts, your "facts of life", are nothing more than your opinions. The fact that Peevey and Brown were both at Berkeley means nothing more than the fact that you were there at that time also. I didn't go to Berkeley, I went to school in San Diego. But I do personally know people who did, and they are quite proud of the fact that they earned their degrees there. You are of course entitled to your opinion of Berkeley. As I said, I didn't attend. But that said, in my mind the list, the very,very long list of Nobel laureates, Turing Award laureates, National Medal of Science and National Medal of Technology, Gödel, Wolf, and Fields winners tells me they must be doing something right. And that doesn't even include the various people who have won Pulitzers, Academy awards, Emmys, the authors, athletes, members of academia..the list goes on and on of people who are Berkeley grads who have not only excelled in their chosen field, but in many cases helped make the world a better place. You have your own opinion and I respect your right to express it, though I have never read anything by anyone who has expressed such an unpropitious view of the world as you do. don bauder. Of course, anything is possible. But my point was this. Anon92107 seems to be suggesting that CalBerkely is somehow responsible for the decline of America, if not the entire western world, by producing the kind of people that turn out like Peevey and Brown. So the point, actually 2 of them, are that being at the same university for one overlapping year doesn't mean they necessarily knew each other, thereby establishing a pathway to the corruption/ignorance that was to come, and point 2, that in being there in 1961, anon92017 was there at least 1 year when Peevey was there and possibly as many as 6. That means that A- he could have been acquainted with 1 or both of them also, and B- he was subject to the same influences while there as both Peevey and Brown were. Since he seems to be placing part of the blame on Berkeley for influencing Brown and Peevey, why should we assume that he/she was immune from the same influence.— April 14, 2015 9:04 p.m.
