A Week on a New Hampshire Lake
Gotta Rant About the old houses...oh the beauty of them. Some with roof-lines as square as the day they were raised 200 years ago. <<Can't say that of the new canned versions that now populate an awful lot of NHs scare arable land, as they are made largely of sawdust and polymers. >> Look in the barns and attics, and admire mortise and tenon construction, all before the advent of power tools, pegs hand carved to fit, the timbers are of wood that will never be seen again for building. Wonder how men got those granite blocks so straight on the foundations with only oxen and tackle to aid. The 6th oldest house in America is in Gilmanton NH, a fully restored Garrison house from the 1600s. American chestnut boards 24" wide, old growth hemlock as dense and strong a nail can still not be pulled from them. Gems being dismantled every day... and their gorgeous old float glass windows replaced with ...cringe..plastic...disfiguring them forever. So lovers of utility and architecture... visit NH and drive the small towns and back roads and see beauty that very like may not endure the next century the way it has the last three.— September 5, 2012 6:35 p.m.

Mom's Pies: Fuel for Famished Cyclists (or Other People) in Julian
Mr. Pike, I am so glad you jumped off your bike and legged it into Mom's pies with your photographer to share the experience of being there with readers who are not..yet... There is nothing that says 'I'm Alive' like a slice or pie or second best, reading about great pies, and seeing beautiful pics o' pies in all their manifestations of glory. Good service is good news. As my sister and I say- Pie..its just an excuse to eat crust! Real pie lovers out there, you know what I'm talkin' bout...— January 19, 2012 5:15 a.m.
