Jerry Sanders for Romney's Veep?
Cool. Maybe he could get the Feds to build the Chargers a new stadium. Just call it a "shovel-ready" project.— April 26, 2012 9:03 a.m.
Grantville Group Protests Phony Projects City Wants to Complete
Somewhere (probably Tierrasanta), Jim Madaffer is smiling. He tried to ram Grantville redevelopment down the throats of local residents, and only by the doings of people like Brian Peterson and the Grantville Action Group, has the city been mainly thwarted (at least for now) in their attempts to "revitalize" Grantville and Allied Gardens. And why is CCDC even paying for Petco Park? It was supposed to be paid for with TOT revenue by all of the ballpark-area hotels that were supposed to have been built--oh, wait, the city allowed John Moores and JMI to change the terms of the MOU to allow less hotels and more (empty) condos instead. Hopefully, the oversight board will reject some of these projects; if not them, perhaps the state will chime in and say no to the EOPS.— April 25, 2012 11:31 p.m.
Can’t Park It in Grantville
Allied Gardens does NOT need revitalization, thank you.— March 14, 2012 4:45 p.m.
The return of the Chargers scandals
Don, I see that your name came up on the UT website recently, and you were scolded severely by one particular individual stating that you had absolutely no idea what you were talking about in regards to Petco Park. After I stopped laughing, I decided to not respond to his post (there were several, actually). In all seriousness, I appreciate your coverage of the debacle that is Petco Park, and the next, larger one involving the new Chargers Stadium.— March 4, 2012 6:07 p.m.
Residents of Allied Gardens to Discuss Upcoming Developments and Proposal to Add Parks
This is the crap that Jim Madaffer tried to ram down our throats, when he was our "representative" on the city council. Unfortunately, it just won't go away. It's too bad the picture shown for this article couldn't be a little more specific--for example, showing the actual site for the (alleged) senior housing facility at the corner of Glenroy and Zion. The entire area consists of single-family homes, and it's been that way since Allied Gardens was developed in the 50's. This center would be out of place in this area. Should this go through, I am sure developers are licking their chops to get ahold of the property where the Albertson's is on Waring Rd., and build multi-story apts/condos on the site.— February 5, 2012 8:24 p.m.
SDG&E Defends Solar Rate Hike At County Hearing
And you expected SDG&E to say, "oops, sorry, what were we thinking".— December 6, 2011 9:11 p.m.
State Looking for Redevelopment Fraud. Suggestion: Grantville
Response to #2--I encourage anyone to drive through Grantville, and wonder where will this "redevelopment" project put the thousands of new residential units, and who will be able to afford them. Not to mention, where will all the water come from; after all, are we not still in a stage 2 water emergency, as declared by our fearless leader, Mayor Sanders? In response to the condos and hotels downtown; there are more condos than there should be, because the city allowed John Moores and JMI to build fewer hotel rooms, which undermined the ability of TOT revenue to pay off the ballpark bonds (which, in itself, was fantasy), and also gave JMI the right to build more condos, many of which are empty. A perfect example of the "bustling" East Village area is, for me, January 2nd, when I went to the auto show. I parked on a city street, and walked about 8 blocks to the auto show, through the basically deserted East Village area. The only people on the street were other people going to the show, and small groups of people standing in front of realty offices, gawking at the large lists of foreclosed properties in the downtown area. So, tell us again how well this redevelopment scam is working out, Mr Sanders. Tell us again how many jobs will be created in Grantville, to build all of these new residences that very few will be able to afford. It is a scam, pure and simple.— January 30, 2011 10:21 a.m.
Grantville Redevelopment Money Transfer Ruled Permissible
Unfortunately, the argument by GAG never had a chance; it made too much sense.— December 23, 2010 11 p.m.
Letters
In response to "Use It Twice" (Mary Slupe via e-mail): It is a good idea to play football at Petco Park as well as baseball, however, in the agreements between the Padres and the City of San Diego, I believe there is a clause that prohibits the playing of football at Petco Park.— February 8, 2010 11:48 p.m.
NFL lies about Super Bowl benefits
Response to post #38: If you think the NBA and Major League Soccer will come to San Diego, while you are building that new football stadium, you might want to look into a new arena, and a soccer-specific stadium. MLS won't come to San Diego without one, and forget about the NBA; they will never play at the current Sports Arena. So, all you will need is, oh, I don't know, maybe another $500 to $600 million. I'm sure Mayor Jerry can find that kind of scratch just laying around.— February 8, 2010 11:40 p.m.
