Ramona Zapata, In Memoriam
LOL - A short note on my comment: my dad was never mayor (he managed the Shell Station at Division & Euclid during the 60s), but earlier when my mother was in that pageant and parade while she was still a pom-pom girl at Lincoln High, it was rumored that the mayor at the time seemed... interested. Besides... I look nothing like Charles C. Dail!— December 15, 2009 1:13 p.m.

Beauty is where you find it. My mother's family came from Mexico mostly in the revolutions before 1925. Her mother was tall, and I remember how tall mi abuela was before she died while I was still in high school in the 70s. There were rumors of how she had been picked out to dance for Pancho Villa. There were rumors about my own mother being hit on by the mayor of San Diego when she was the first runner-up in a Christmas parade pageant decades ago in the mid-50s. Most of the old pictures are gone now, but I remember one of my mother's father looking stern in the sharkskin suit he would wear for winning dance contest in Imperial County back during the Depression. There are no pictures of my father's side of the family back then. There was too much turmoil when so many of his relatives were forced to abandon their farms and move into camps because the color of his family's skin was a little too Japanese for most people's comfort here. Actually, your mom is a classic beauty...— December 14, 2009 10:24 p.m.
This Is How Bad It Is in Tourism
In a television news story in the last two days about gaming casino expansions despite the bad economy, wasn't there a statement that average hotel utilization in San Diego is now only around 50%?— December 12, 2009 1:39 p.m.
This Is How Bad It Is in Tourism
So where can I buy shares in the San Diego Chargers? Is it even possible to do that? If we can't do that as a individuals or collectively as the City of San Diego, then why is that NFL franchise called "San Diego Chargers"? Are we nothing more than a crappy superbowl site to the NFL?— December 12, 2009 1:27 p.m.
Natural History Museum Bonds Lowered to Junk Status
This might require some observation of the City of San Diego Park & Rec Board's Balboa Park Committee to see if anybody who is even remotely connected to our Redevelopment Authority AKA city council has any concerns about the downgrade...— December 11, 2009 2:28 p.m.
"T4M"
Kinda makes me wonder what kind of discussions about the Tiger that Ms. Woods is having with her support group...— December 10, 2009 8:35 a.m.
San Diego Discussing Ways to Pump Public Money into Chargers
Re #22 and taking a flying leap: Mention of that sort of civic benefit was not found in ballot pamphlet arguments for or against Proposition B ("One Reason Prop. B Died" http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/election/article_a…).— December 10, 2009 8:07 a.m.
Sempra, RBS Consider Selling Commodities Trading Unit
Nothing direct about this evidence, merely circumstantial: "RBS Sempra Commodities May Return to Sempra" at WSJ http://online.wsj.com/article/SB12572409852382485… Somebody once told a journalist: Follow the money.— December 9, 2009 9:22 p.m.
Sempra, RBS Consider Selling Commodities Trading Unit
Re #5: Sempra Energy would rather not want to be known as a public utility. The public utility SDG&E has no direct ties to Sempra Energy Trading or any other components of RBS Sempra Commodities that I've seen... and SDG&E probably delivers a lot less profit to Sempra Energy than the MarketWatch-reported $85 million out of $200 million total Sempra Energy quarterly profit that RBS Sempra Commodities does. RBS Sempra Commodities wants to be known and well known among London-centered bullion traders. RBS underwrites more Dubai debt than anyone of record. Dubai sees an estimated $300 million in gold trade per year out of the Congo by way of Uganda. Those are some rather large, conspicuous dots. For motive, it's helpful to remember the claim in large type out of Sempra Energy's SIMPLY STATED ANNUAL REPORT 2000: "We stated that we would realize one-third of earnings from our unregulated businesses by 2003." The entire Congo conflict gold situation appears to be rather unregulated in a global sort of way, no? There are interesting contrary comments on the utility of the 60 Minutes report at http://www.nationaljewelernetwork.com/njn/content…— December 9, 2009 8:31 p.m.
San Diego Discussing Ways to Pump Public Money into Chargers
Maybe San Diego should put in a bid for the retired carrier JFK (http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/20…). After hauling it here as another floating museum, we will suddenly discover we have enough room onboard for a new library and perpetual homeless shelter below, and a brand new stadium atop the unused flight deck...— December 9, 2009 12:15 p.m.
