Enough nepotism and cronyism
Is everyone getting as tired as I am of receiving robo calls by Supervisor Greg Cox endorsing Kevin O'Neill and Josh Smith for School Board? I guess it figures -- Mayor Cox terms out in 40 days and will then be unemployed. Of course Greg wants to help her find another cushy job at the public trough. Alas, how long will this dynasty plague us all!— October 23, 2014 2:31 p.m.
Enough nepotism and cronyism
Kevin O'Neill is a chameleon. Not so long ago he was a strident opponent of Jim Pieri at Mountain West Realty. He helped to gather signatures against Pieri's 'Espanada' project. In the past few years he worked for Pieri moving a group of duplexes from Pieri's H Street property to Roosevelt Street. Now he is firmly in bed with Jim Pieri aiming to develop 97 residential units on Main Street near Hilltop. My point is you never know which Kevin O'Neill you are looking at. Mostly I think it comes down to "just follow the money." His alliance with Cheryl Cox and David Malcolm make him a poor choice for the SUHSD Board, and its desperate need to curb the corruption.— October 21, 2014 7 p.m.
Pimp hand strong in Chula
Like Sjtorres, I am troubled by the influence of "union money" and "Lincoln Club money." The difference in my mind is that "union" money represents a rather large group. On the other hand, "Lincoln Club" money wears the familiar face of a small insider group of powerful people, such as Cheryl Cox, David Malcolm, Dan Hom, Shirley Horton, Jerry Rindone, Kevin O'Neill, and John McCann. To watch this group wield their power in an effort to shape public opinion is indeed troublesome to me.— August 29, 2014 11:51 a.m.

Here is the info about Voice of San Diego's "workshops" coming up: Voice of San Diego invites Chula Vistans to participate in our next program focused on November’s school board elections for the Sweetwater Union High School District. Voice of San Diego is hosting these free workshops to help Chula Vista residents become engaged with the current race and learn about the history of the Sweetwater board scandal. Parents and high school students are welcome to participate. We’ll train you to become citizen journalists - utilizing social media to reach out to your Chula Vista neighbors and help them stay informed on the election. The 6-week workshop series will culminate with a debate between candidates- planned and scheduled by News Literacy participants - held at the Chula Vista Public Library. Class Schedule: Chula Vista Public Library 365 F Street (Conference Room) Tuesday September 9, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday September 16, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday September 23, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday September 30, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday October 7, 6:00-7:30 p.m. Tuesday October 14, 6:00-7:30 p.m. The last one will be followed by a public forum, date to be announced.— August 26, 2014 4:28 p.m.

In 1994, I believe, Chula Vista had an open seat for Mayor. Shirley Horton was the underdog, in terms of supporters. Her only known supporters were David Malcolm and Cheryl Cox. But thanks to Malcolm's tactics, Shirley won the election. Soon after taking office, she led the effort to unseat the incumbent, Robert Penner. She then appointed David Malcolm as Chula Vista's Port Commissioner. Malcolm eventually made a secret deal with Duke Energy (for $20,000 a month!) to put Duke's interest ahead of the city's and port's interest. These are the "silent players" you need to be watching.— August 26, 2014 9:15 a.m.
New blood for Sweetwater district?
I cannot decide who disappoints me most -- Lyn Neylon or Judge Espana. Both have done a terrible disservice to the citizens of the Sweetwater High School District. Neylon's comments are not only inappropriate but it was also made when it was too late to do anything about it. She is proving to be totally irrelevant.— August 22, 2014 1:54 p.m.
New blood for Sweetwater district?
Does anyone know if there is an "out" in the 20-year lease for the EastLake property that they wanted for a new administration site? Has anyone read the lease?— August 21, 2014 9:55 p.m.
Olympic committee to palm off training center?
Mayor Cheryl Cox wants to cement a legacy for her tenure. In my mind, the Olympic Point and Lake Point projects are her true legacy. She does not give a damn about people living in this community. All she cares about is getting something built to bring in those developers dollars. And Councilwoman Pamela Bensoussan is always right behind her. Every mayor needs a lap-dog. Every time we look at the Olympic Point development and the soon-to-be Lake Point project, we should thank Cox and Bensoussan for these bad developments. Unfortunately, citizens of Chula Vista will have to live with this blight long after those two are gone.— August 16, 2014 12:16 p.m.
Democracy costs, even in Chula Vista
It IS indeed amazing how active the lame-duck Mayor Cox has become! Her community meetings about Sweetwater Union High School District, her forum on Chula Vista's image, and her effort to change the way we have chosen to elect our Council candidates makes me wonder what in the world she is aiming for. Is she planning to be the new high school Superintendent or, as someone has suggested, Greg's seat on the Board of County Supervisors?? Thank Heaven this lame-duck has only 116 days left to exert her unconscionable obsession to control everything she touches.— August 8, 2014 2:02 p.m.
33% of the profit? No problem — hey!
In the last election, I was persuaded that Lyn Neylon would be a better County Board member for us than Jerry Rindone. It is obvious that that was wrong. She seems to care little about South County. I feel very misled by her campaign and would never vote for her again.— August 1, 2014 3:37 p.m.
