Sweetwater School District Kids Face Bus Cuts
We spent a week in the northern part of the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, on the Utah border. This was WAY out in the middle of nowhere. The main occupation is raising sheep, so the homes are way, way apart. We were staying right near the Navajo high school -- the only one within miles and miles. So at 5 and 6 in the morning, when it was still dark in the fall, we could see the school busses rounding up kids from far and wide. As far as we could tell NO KID lived walking distance, or at least within half a day of walking. So kids in Chula Vista are just too soft!!— August 7, 2012 10:16 p.m.
Chula Vista Goes for District Elections--Almost
Pancho -- Cox got 18,771 votes in the Primary -- there are a bit over 100,000 registered voters in Chula Vista, so she became Mayor with only 18% of the REGISTERED voters (but 57% of those few who actually voted). So that is Castaneda's point. Only 33,000 people voted in the Primary -- probably double that number voted in the General Election in November, so that is why Castaneda wants to the top two REGARDLESS of the Primary vote to also have to run in the General.— July 20, 2012 10:01 p.m.
Chula Vista Goes for District Elections--Almost
I did not listen to the whole discussion, but not once did I hear the principal unique feature of Chula Vista mentioned -- old Chula Vista on the west side, new Chula Vista on the east side; lower-income Chula Vista on the west side, wealthier Chula Vista on the east side; planned communities on the east side, un-planned communities on the west side. The solution should be obvious: within the boundaries of Chula Vista, draw three EAST-WEST lines -- that would result in four districts, EACH OF WHICH would include west AND east Chula Vista. Each would have a Hispanic majority. Each would have rich and poor. Each would have planned and un-planned communities. Then wiggle the lines to make the population numbers equal. Ta-da -- done. You're welcome.— July 20, 2012 9:51 a.m.
Local Coastal Commission Meeting Won't Address Chula Vista Bayfront Plan
Pancho -- just for the record, Crossroads II was formed in 2002 just after one group of people had managed to save Friendship Park (behind the library) from being destroyed by development, and another group of people had stopped a developer from building a strip-mall across the front of Southwestern College. The two groups got together, formed an organization, and named it Crossroads II at the suggestion of former Mayor Will Hyde, who had founded Crossroads I.— July 10, 2012 10:07 a.m.
Local Coastal Commission Meeting Won't Address Chula Vista Bayfront Plan
First of all, Earl Jentz has never contributed as much as a penny to Crossroads II, although we consider him a good friend. Secondly, Earl Jentz is totally disinterested in the Bayfront Plan because he made a deposit on a condo in the 1993 Bayfront Plan. He thinks this one will flop just like that one did. "Much ado about nothing," is his attitude.— July 9, 2012 10:47 p.m.
It's a Small World After All...Another Gandara, the Same GCR
VigilantinChulaVista This is all a lot of talk if the recall fails to qualify for the ballot. I am not feeling optimistic.— July 3, 2012 6:56 p.m.
Solar Power Company Sues San Ysidro School District
This is indeed a new business model. Gull a tiny, poor school district into signing a multi-million dollar contract, and then sue them for damages when you cannot perform. The YMCA is in double-peril because I believe that Art Castanares is a member of their Board of Directors.— June 20, 2012 8:23 p.m.
Chula Vista Elementary Schools Seek Funding, Hire Consultant
At the present time, FOUR out of the five CVESD Board members got there by being APPOINTED, not by being elected. And apparently they all knew each other before being elected. That practice of resigning early so your fellow Board members can appoint a buddy has got to stop before we will support any bond measure. Those four Board members who have been appointed must all promise NOT to run as an "incumbent" in the next election cycle.— May 20, 2012 11:51 a.m.
Will Southern Cal Newspapers Combine?
Being one of a dying breed who still likes to hear the newspaper hit our driveway I have mixed feelings. I hate what the UT is today but we need a newspaper so badly.— August 3, 2011 10:50 a.m.
South Bay Expressway to Be Leased by SANDAG
It was a boondoggle even before it was built. Ordinary citizens knew it would never be used by the truckers but the powers that be - Greg and Cheryl Cox, Dan Hom, Greg Hulsizer and many more took enormous credit for it. Cheryl, as mayor, milked it like a cow frequently. when she needed money for something Now she champions SANDAG buying it......it's just taxpayer money!— August 2, 2011 9:59 p.m.
