Screw U: The Next Bubble May Be Higher Education
It used to have a College of Life Sciences. You mean that is now gone?— August 11, 2012 8:34 a.m.
Eye gnat infestations in south Escondido – end of local organic food farming?
I once (long, long ago) had a doctor tell me that the healthiest people do the most complaining--they expect to be always in perfect health. San Diego is almost "perfect" in terms of environment, and it's ironically laughable that eye gnats would be such a big issue and the issue of poisons used to create the illusion of perfection (to solve an immediate problem NOW, expeditiously) is a reflection of the fundamentally infantile nature of our culture and personality. We are willing to trade off a small irritant without the slightest regard to the down-the-road consequences that can cause extreme misery and death. I have lived in insect-ridden Hells, and, well, Flit (DDT) them was our attitude.— August 11, 2012 8:31 a.m.
Could Imperial Valley Become Owens Valley?
The bottom-line is the ratio of supply to DEMAND. That's VERY different from NEED. Therein lies the solution, but even that has its limits. Technology cannot save you if you persist in living in dreamland.— August 10, 2012 10:21 p.m.
League of California Cities Touts Openness but Shuns Disclosure Requirements
There is no justification for secrecy at any level of "government." The problem is That Old Black Magic called manipulation.— August 10, 2012 10:16 p.m.
Screw U: The Next Bubble May Be Higher Education
Biology, apparently, doesn't even rate a thin line on the charts, but an understanding of life is what will keep you alive. Ignorance of life, especially ignoring the ignorance, is a fatal path. Engineering, business, and accounting are all ignorant of life--especially what it takes to keep an organism like Homo sap. ticking.— August 10, 2012 10:14 p.m.
Eye gnat infestations in south Escondido – end of local organic food farming?
"San Diegans will always be bugged by some eye gnats, no matter how many measures are taken against farmers." This is a major point. But entomologists need to study the natural history of these gnat populations to determine just how they reproduce and what predators feed on them. Swallow habitats? Also, ALL of the locations where the gnats feed and reproduce should be checked, not just organic farms but all farms, gardens, and other habitats. Different ways of storing and applying organic fertilizers might figure into a comprehensive approach to MINIMIZING the problem. People rarely want to admit their part in the problem, and gardeners of all kinds could be contributing to the problem. Shifting to certain kinds of "chemical" fertilizers might also be worth considering, especially if the "organic" fertilizer happens to contain hormones, drugs, and other non-organic constituents of animal feed. The most important consideration is keeping poisons out of all foods. I could go on and on . . . "San Diegans will always be bugged by some eye gnats, no matter how many measures are taken against farmers." What is needed is more fact and less opinion.— August 10, 2012 10:08 p.m.
Did This Guy Prepare YOUR Taxes?
A monster like Peyer is in a CC prison--better yet he should have been thrown off a bridge like his victim. He should be earning his keep and paying restitution. So should other criminals. Any ideas about how? Maybe a treadmill in alternating six-hour shifts to generate electricity? Other ideas?— August 10, 2012 9:51 p.m.
Tourism Picks Up
My guess too, but I'm just curious why more factors aren't factored into such analysis, and how useful or misleading the simpler stuff is.— July 28, 2012 2:09 p.m.
Two Charged with Fraudulent Wheelchair Medicare Claims
Price a piece of medical equipment anywhere. You will find that you can buy it for cash at a fraction of what Medicare is billed. I tried to blow the whistle to the Federal Bureau of Ineptitude on this years ago, and was informed that they had bigger fish to fry, like sick people taking marijuana.— July 27, 2012 11:08 p.m.
League of California Cities Touts Openness but Shuns Disclosure Requirements
Good work, Don! And everybody. Individuals have a right to privacy; governments have a responsibility, not only to disclose, but to facilitate the dissemination of government activities to the citizens is is sworn to serve. What is the penalty for failing to exercise good faith with respect to the oath of office? Is secrecy by government, except with the consent of the governed, constitutional?— July 27, 2012 11:03 p.m.
