Time to Call Batman?
Pastor Fred Phelps lost a major lawsuit over this issue in 2007, to the tune of $11 million big ones and had his home, church and law firm's property (his has like 10 children and 5 are lawyers) all attached with liens. That jury trial verdit was overturned last year. BUT, it is on appeal before the SCOTUS. The question of free speech is not the only right at issue here, there is also the right to privacy. There can, and indeed are, limits to "free speech". For instance you cannot yell fire in a crowed movie theater. You cannot encourage a person to commit suicide. You have "time, place and manner" restrictions to when and where you can engage in free speech in public and semi public places. It is a very interesting case b/c of the value our society places on the First Amendment's right to free speech. Speech which most everyone finds in this case dispicable. Free Speech in America has more protection than any other country in the world. BUT there is indeed a balance on free speech, a small balance, but a balance nonetheless. And that balance, IMO, is going to weigh in favor of the SCOTUS reinstating the $11 million jury verdict in this case.— July 18, 2010 4:43 p.m.
Ballpark Study Confesses: "We Hastened and Greatly Worsened the Glut"
ecoasttransplant How you doing, Mark Fabiani! ================== OMG-Classic!!!!!— July 18, 2010 4:25 p.m.
June Unemployment Back up to 10.5%
According to 2008 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary in San Diego was $47,250 at that time ============= Yes, I have a link to one of the articles I keep copied now that I see your number. I am pretty shocked at the $47K. Obviously it includes gov jobs which skews the number upward, but that is still higher than I woudl have guessed, even accounting for gov jobs......— July 18, 2010 4:24 p.m.
Cunningham Says Local Economic Recovery Losing Momentum
The entire country has been in the toilet since 2008-that is 2 years. I can see it staying in the toilet for another 2 more years. The dismantling of our middle class over the last 30 years by shipping our manufacturing, and tax, base overseas has now hit home. Deflation is already setting in, and the cause of deflation is lack of jobs.— July 18, 2010 12:18 p.m.
Ballpark Study Confesses: "We Hastened and Greatly Worsened the Glut"
So people here do not like Petco Park...I can see that. But the fact that it has helped spur development can not be denied. ============ Errr...WRONG...again....it can be denied all day long. I'm no real estate wonder whiz you know....I bet you don't even know the back story behind Horton Plaza.........— July 17, 2010 6:01 p.m.
Ballpark Study Confesses: "We Hastened and Greatly Worsened the Glut"
First off, again let me say the development downtown has not been perfect. However, no mater how you slice it, it is needed. ============= Says who-YOU???????????????? Some east coast transplant who has no clue about So Cal. Please! You are just a sock puppet account for Burnham, Moores or one of the other DT yahoo developers....— July 17, 2010 5:59 p.m.
Ballpark Study Confesses: "We Hastened and Greatly Worsened the Glut"
"Tax Increment" is the excess tax revenues, calculated as the difference from old blighted area tax revenues to new higher revenues after agency-sponsored redevelopment. California state law keeps the Tax Increment (overage compare to old tax revenues) inside the redevelopment area, kind of like the Sheriff of Nottingham's private treasure chest. Like the old sheriff, CCDC is a master at redistributing the wealth to the wealthy, namely the developers that CCDC is a cheerleader for. ============ As Don has stated, it is "contrived complexity" that makes this scam work.......— July 17, 2010 5:56 p.m.

Like Raw Meat
Have never come across a ray yet, but I did come across a small lobster about 50 feet off the sand in South Mission Beach (Ensenada Court).....I was like Hmmmm.... I know it is small.... and I could get in trouble for taking it, walking out of the surf on a crowded beach with a little lobster...but if no one saw me then that baby would make a tasty little snack......so I risk it all.....I went to grab him, and you cannot believe how fast they can run away.....I was shocked at how fast that guy took off. Wasn't even close. So, I did not get a ticket for illegal lobster poaching and I also did not get that tasty lobster snack.— July 16, 2010 11:18 p.m.
June Unemployment Back up to 10.5%
There are government data on San Diego salaries, broken down by kind of work (dentist, bricklayer, etc.). I have had columns on that. I think the average (perhaps it's median) was around $45,000 two years ago ===== I would like to see the numbers if you can find the source.— July 16, 2010 11:11 p.m.
