Lucky Us! Don Bauder’s story “Transaction Tax: You Can’t Tax Greed” (“City Lights,” September 22) is amazing. So far, it has 367 comments on the website, and that means that a very lively discussion is going on, with Mr. Bauder doing his usual deft refereeing of others’ opposing opinions. For his age, this guy continues to be a heavyweight contender. No other writer here can “carry his bags,” as my old dad used to say about someone who stood head and shoulders above the rest. Does the Reader fully appreciate how lucky they are to have him? Nan Shartel == Don's blog gets 100 times more comments than any other blog, and I would bet 10K more times the "hits".— October 6, 2011 2:07 p.m.

In his September 20, 2011 “Almost Factual News” blog, Walter Mencken misleads readers to believe he spoke with both University of San Diego president Mary E. Lyons, Ph.D., and USD professor of chemistry Debbie Tahmassebi, Ph.D., about a recent $600,000 National Science Foundation grant, but he did not. The information attributed to Drs. Lyons and Tahmassebi is completely fabricated and untrue. We understand the nature of this satirical column. However, Mr. Mencken has gone too far with this completely false article. The only “factual” statement in the piece is the fact that USD received a $600,000 National Science Foundation grant we commonly refer to as AFFIRM. We demand the blog be removed from your website immediately. so charismatic, == Psycholizard really nailed it. Jobs was the ultimate leader. He SOLD his products with his enthusiasm and made you want to buy it by his charm. I woudl say his salesmanship is more important than his visionary products (or just as important).— October 6, 2011 10:31 a.m.

Apple's Cupertino campus is so big-and their plans to build a mammoth new campus led me to believe they were also manufacturing their products right here at home. They are truly the comeback company of the century. Bar none. And it was Jobs that engineered that comeback. BTW-Pixar has a 2 hour profile on the Biography chanel that is played fairly often, it goes into grest detail about John Lassiter who started and runs Pixar-and how Jobs bankrolled Lassiter and Pixar. If you see it in the listings I highly reccoment it.— October 6, 2011 10:29 a.m.

Jim Brulte ran the entire CA GOP a few years back, if he goes down it will be a mjaor blow for the CA GOP which is already in the dog house, bucking the nationwide trend of GOP increases natinwide while CA GOP is almost nonexistant..........— October 6, 2011 10:25 a.m.

I think more significant is the fact that only 3 yrs ago, Apple had a market cap of about $175 billion and Exxon's was almost 3X larger. Since then, Apple's market cap has more than doubled and Exxon's has decreased by almost 30%. == What is even MORE significant than that is the fact Apple was capped at around $5 billion in 1996 (I thought they were going to go BK when their stock was trading at $23 a share and my Mom wnated to buy tons of it-I said NO WAY they are going BK!) and they have a cap rate today of what-$350-$$400 Billion???? From $5 Billion to $400 billion is mind numbing. If we had more companies manufacturing products like Apple does America would own the world again like it did in the 50's and 60's.— October 6, 2011 12:13 a.m.

State-supported universities have plenty of students who do not belong in college. Best, Don Bauder == The graduation rate at SDSU was 25% when I went there-that is pretty shocking ot me.— October 5, 2011 8:09 p.m.
San Diego City Council Responds to County Grand Jury Assertion That New City Hall Is Unnecessary
All debts will be erased by bankruptcy judges’ ruling that city sales tax will be increased 2% without a public vote to cover debt. == BK Judges have no legal authority to increase any tax, including sales tax.— October 5, 2011 8:07 p.m.
San Diego City Council Responds to County Grand Jury Assertion That New City Hall Is Unnecessary
The grand jury concluded that the city cannot justify a new, 19-story, 576,000-square-foot facility with an approximate $500-per-square-foot cost (estimated at $293,500,000). The grand jury determined the city could purchase “existing buildings of sufficient size to accommodate the City’s needs” for approximately $200 per square foot. == Why do we have morons in charge?— October 5, 2011 8:06 p.m.
