Safety last in SDSU labs, state audit finds
There went the "first-class research university" the now-departed Elliot Hirshman was trying to build (even though it went against the California college plan and the history of SDSU.) I can tell you that the Life Science buildings haven't been changed in decades (the Oceanography portion has that salt tank funk), the Astronomy/Astrophysics offices lack air conditioning, and the Computer Science building hallways are an under-lit labyrinth. That said, Adams Humanities is a pointlessly loopy mess because they won't paint compass arrows on the floor at key points (a thing you see in the Love Library stacks) or color-code the corners because there are few windows. Even the iconic Hepner Hall has classrooms that are stuffed with too many table-chairs. This is a former teachers college, not a research institution, and it needs to focus on cutting the crowding.— April 27, 2018 10:23 p.m.
Are these new college grads ready for life in overpriced San Diego?
Student loans are a scam, the only loans in America you can't void through bankruptcy (since 1998). If you wish to know how bad the default rate is and how we got to a trillion dollars in student debt, stick the term "StudentLoanJustice dot org" into your search engine; the founder of that website, Alan Collinge, writes about one op-ed column to a national publication every couple of months.— April 15, 2018 10:38 a.m.
Still waiting for Soon-Shiong
San Diego: No football team, possibly no newspaper in the near future. We're boned.— March 16, 2018 10:54 p.m.
Half snuff film, half exploitative grindhouse
You want insane, try to track down the "Coffin Joe" (Zé do Caixão) films of José Mojica Marins. All of them are subtitled because Marins worked in the Brazilian B-movie trade, and if you don't speak Brazilian Portuguese, it adds to the alienation effect because they're supernatural horror films, with Coffin Joe as villian-protagonist. Lots of very weird imagery on a budget, and Marins both directs and plays Zé do Caixão. The weirdest one he did was *Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind* (1978) which uses all the bits from other Coffin Joe movies that had not passed previous censorship (the military junta could be pretty capricious....) which are presented as the hallucinations of a Dr. Hamiliton who has been sent to an insane asylum for thinking that Coffin Joe is coming for him and his wife, except that José Mojica Marins appears as himself and Coffin Joe is described as his creation!— March 15, 2018 9:59 p.m.
Anti-immigrant tweeter won’t change
Truly a classy, classy man. Especially his recent Twitter comment on the death of Stephen Hawking: Hector Gastelum @HectorVote 9h9 hours ago "Let's celebrate #StephenHawking greatest discovery I'm 💯% sure right after his passing, #StephenHawkingRIP discovered something #Christians #Catholics #Buddhists #Muslim know & have in common: The belief that #God exists! #Atheists & @neiltyson are wrong!" ....So pretty much he thinks that Hawking is burning in Hell for being an atheist. *A class act all the way.*— March 15, 2018 9:13 p.m.
College Area mini-dorm litigants win
You go around College and Montezuma - none of the apartments that are right next to Sud-Soo are for the in-state Joe or Jill Average SDSU student. Those places (including the new one they are building down the street from the synagogue) are for the deep-pocket international students and the out-of-state/out-of-town kids whose parents could get them into a decent mid-level school anywhere, but Kiddo or Princess is at Sud-Soo to soak up "the culture" and the waves. All of these people in this lawsuit are the locals, using going to college as an excuse to get out of their parent's house, and the College district will only ever move up in quality when SDSU goes out of business.— February 16, 2018 6:11 p.m.
College Area mini-dorm litigants win
According to the State of California Bar website, Carmen Anne Brock is still Deputy City Attorney for San Diego. Found that by simple Google search.— February 16, 2018 5:49 p.m.
SDSU: to Tbilisi with love
To begin with, Georgia is in the Caucuses, not Central Asia. "If the comments from the CSU vice-chancellor, Larry Mandel, are true, the CSU had ample grounds to fire Hirshman for cause, more than a year ago. It didn't do that, and allowed him to find another academic perch back East." The CSU system had the power to fire Hirshman, yes - IF HE WAS GOING OFF ON HIS OWN. I don't think he was; it needs to be looked into whether or not he decided to set up this Tiflis campus on his own, or if the Back Room Boys put him up to it. Elliot Hirshman was a ghost on SDSU campus even before David Horowitz showed up to create that car-blocking riot. (By the way, universities like Temple in Philadelphia have outlets in Japan, so I don't see what the big stink is.) Also, if CSU and SDSU fired him, they couldn't keep him from getting that job Back East - that hire was on the Stevenson College hiring committee and their Board of Governors. So yes, I think Elliot Hirshman was a nebbish and manipulated, or if I'm wrong, then everybody in charge of the CSU system should be taken out behind the sheds and shot. When is Matt Potter going to start really complaining about the Confucius Institute run both in the SDSU Arts and Letters building basement and the back end of the Professional Studies and Fine Arts building across the way, because those people are paid for by the People's Liberation Army of the People's Republic of China. If The Potter wants to rant about "fuerriners" with their "fuerrin ideers" - that whole setup deserves comment.— February 15, 2018 9:23 p.m.
St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox church versus SOHO
Idiotic, but to be expected in San Diego at this point.— April 5, 2017 2:35 a.m.
Hirshman hit for ducking ex-Soviet deal signoffs
**Federal money tied to U.S. intelligence backs SDSU campuses** My response is yes, the CIA does yearly presentations at the "career counseling" (aka "Job Leads 'R Us") office. SDSU is the pie where everybody has their fingers in it; the local government, the federal government, the military contractors: they want whatever "talent" comes out of State.— April 2, 2017 4:05 p.m.
