It ain't over until they haul the projector out of The Ken
The owners of the theatre would never allow that to happen. I see how much you sun-baked locals have done to support The Ken. Do you think there'd be talk of closure on the 27th if business was good? Add don't s*it on Illinois: one of its fallen sons is swinging his heart out to keep this lovely theatre alive. If it does close -- and I don't think it will -- don't blame the owners or Landmark for its fall. Blame yourselves.

Here's a clue, Shirl: I will never interview someone whose work I do not admire. I'm a critic, not a PR man, and it's pointless to waste time plugging something or someone I don't believe in. Besides, it's difficult for me to mask disdain and I don't want to arrange an interview with someone to basically tell them I think they produce ugly children. He's made some clunkers, but "Scary Movie" is a very funny movie and I laughed a lot during "A Haunted House." Speaking with Marlon was truly my pleasure.

Very true. As a show of faith, the property owners want a 10 year lease and a commitment from Landmark to spruce up the place and that means what's shown onscreen as well. More tomorrow after I meet with 3 members of the Berkun Family Trust. Keep everything crossed!

Ken Cinema to close on April 27
I spoke with a CEO at Landmark. The chain did indeed give 30 days notice. They wanted to turn the venue into a state-of-the-art facility by spending $50K on a digital projector -- something a first run theatre needs to stay in business -- but the property owners refused to give them a 2 year lease. I'm meeting with the owners on Wednesday and hopefully this can be settled. And I spoke with Guy at length. Disappointed is a mild way of describing his state of mind.

The owners of the theatre would never allow that to happen. I see how much you sun-baked locals have done to support The Ken. Do you think there'd be talk of closure on the 27th if business was good? Add don't s*it on Illinois: one of its fallen sons is swinging his heart out to keep this lovely theatre alive. If it does close -- and I don't think it will -- don't blame the owners or Landmark for its fall. Blame yourselves.— April 18, 2014 6 a.m.

Here's a clue, Shirl: I will never interview someone whose work I do not admire. I'm a critic, not a PR man, and it's pointless to waste time plugging something or someone I don't believe in. Besides, it's difficult for me to mask disdain and I don't want to arrange an interview with someone to basically tell them I think they produce ugly children. He's made some clunkers, but "Scary Movie" is a very funny movie and I laughed a lot during "A Haunted House." Speaking with Marlon was truly my pleasure.— April 16, 2014 6:31 a.m.

Very true. As a show of faith, the property owners want a 10 year lease and a commitment from Landmark to spruce up the place and that means what's shown onscreen as well. More tomorrow after I meet with 3 members of the Berkun Family Trust. Keep everything crossed!— April 15, 2014 4:39 p.m.

I spoke with a CEO at Landmark. The chain did indeed give 30 days notice. They wanted to turn the venue into a state-of-the-art facility by spending $50K on a digital projector -- something a first run theatre needs to stay in business -- but the property owners refused to give them a 2 year lease. I'm meeting with the owners on Wednesday and hopefully this can be settled. And I spoke with Guy at length. Disappointed is a mild way of describing his state of mind.— April 14, 2014 5:52 p.m.
