Bonus Blog: Worst and Best Romance Movies
Right, Cuddle, we should try to tackle your list. Breakfast at Tiffany's: I was left with Moon River stuck annoyingly in my head, and while thinking, damn, the captain of the A-Team was kinda cute back then, I was also raging that this bony little twerp did not deserve love--even in the back of a taxicab--for putting "Cat" out in the rain. Damn Holly GoLightly forever for putting Cat out in the rain!!! Witness: Kelly McGillis is just plain HOT, and they were right to cast her in so many films set in the 40s or 50s, because she wears the clothing well. In this film, she makes white homespun a matter to pant over. And as usual, Indy's scar acts well. I give it a thumbs wayyyyy up. Brokeback: Yes, it is such a run-of-the-mill love story, if you think about it, and I agree that it is amazing how people can't spoon up gayness along with this pap. I did cry, and get caught up in it. I liked Ang Lee's film at times, but feel that Wim Wenders could have taken it out of its humdrum, hackeyned standardness, and rearticulated it in something more unique and cinematically pleasing, outside of the postcard qualities of the mountains--c'mon people, anyone's pictures look good of some scenery! To prove my point about Wenders, try Paris/Texas as a love story.— January 17, 2010 1:34 p.m.

Alrighty, then. Let's cover some perverse love stories, as per Grant's suggestion with "Kalifornia." I'll offer Harmony Korinn's "Julien Donkeyboy:" Chloe Sevigny and her autistic, and perhaps homicidally-oriented older brother. It is so romantic when she pretends to be their dead mother on the phone downstairs, saying that she is a dentist in the afterlife, and that he needs to take better care of his teeth.— January 17, 2010 1:13 p.m.

I wanted to hear that from the Fish's maw, Grant. ;) Yes, the women are largely addled in the 80s, so twooo. However, this means we have to throw out the addled ladies of previe gens, like say, the 30s and 40s. Are we willing to discard generations of films because the women are treated/act in ways we now classify as naive and subjugated to some master narrative of masculine superiority? Why, you little fool! I oughta kiss you! ;) Glad you warned me about that film, Grant. Would have ponied up the $4 to watch it on demand, just to see if Ginnifer Goodwin is any better acting in film than she is on Big Love for tv...Give me Chloe Sevigny any day! Stop digressing, Pete--I'll give you the anti-laxative for that. Yes, Debbie would be considered a classic now, wouldn't it? Any pre-condom x-rated films probably would at this point. Speaking of generations, ours missed the carefree days of innocent sexual play, didn't it?— January 17, 2010 12:43 p.m.

Oh, excepting Pretty Woman, of course. I agree that it sucks the last string of sauerkraut out of the mega-sized Costco jar... and what of the interesting romantic tension of "Bridges?" and why is Affair to Remember just randomly stuck in with the 80s and 90s?— January 17, 2010 11:58 a.m.

Four Weddings and a Funeral was one of the cutest romantic flicks ever, same with When Harry Met Sally. How can you fault these little bonbons, Cuddle? Interesting that you also picked all of the standard 80s and 90s classics for your "worst" list. Care to explain? ;)— January 17, 2010 11:56 a.m.

No I.D., No Comment
I would like to post a retraction of selected statements in #21 to Mr. Williams: Clearly, Mr. Williams and I exist somewhere in the same solar system. In fact, it is my firm belief that both Mr. Williams and myself, as organic life forms, derive crucial nourishment from aforementioned solar body and its planetary environs. Moreover, I expect no "f'in break" from Mr. Williams; indeed, I did not deserve such a requested break. Further, Mr. Williams has not likely, nor will he likely, accept illegal funds or "pay to play" from "who," "whom," or any first, second, or third person party linked to the profession of the quill. Lastly, I did not intend to suggest that Mr. Williams would place his most vocal orifice upon the fleshy portion of any aforementioned third party's nether regions, for pay or any other reason whatsoever. This concludes the "selected" portion of this retraction program. As for the statements I am not at leisure to retract, these do not concern Mr. Williams directly. Suffice to say that I in no way believe that Mr. Fred Williams is a fan of David Metzger. "Dang, folks, we lost a provocative local voice, y'all! Now, who is going to speak our deepest, darkest (pardon the pun!) desires and hatreds?" I would prefer, of course, that no one step in to answer the above question, which should remain rhetorical. ;)— January 16, 2010 3:29 a.m.
