Leaf Blower (ain't no snow in San Diego)
Correction: Ironically, the only time I have done the above--condemn a particular group--has been to put down bikers in this thread--I should have stuck with the term 'bikes' which pose a triple threat: air pollution, noise pollution, and public safety.— July 1, 2009 10:54 a.m.

Josh, you know me a little, but not a lot. You have NO idea what my part in this life has been to understand and combat racism. Suffice to say it hasn't consisted in sitting around and jacking off about how one group of people consistently behaves in one manner or another, and then dropping the topic, without any attempt to draw on social histories or current theory. As I've said over a dozen times now, I didn't initially come to these blogs to educate about it--I came for pleasant chat. I was surprised to find what I did, made some reasonable attempts to discuss, and then realized you don't want to learn anything about it, so bowing out is the best option when this topic comes up. Why attempt to bring me back into it again and again, when all you are interested in are simplistic conclusions, pat responses, and useless labels?— July 1, 2009 10:51 a.m.

Hey Spliff, you're always on the library computer. Research the term "dago," for everybody and holla back?— July 1, 2009 10:16 a.m.

Uh, Ms. Grant, I have no idea where your own comment came from, but it certainly smacks of left field. I suggest you read a little more carefully, and I will attempt to clarify my own comments. In fact, MsGrant, if you'd like to know what I think about public spaces for opinion, see here my comment to someone who felt a particular writer's blogs were reserved for only a few: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2009/jun/10/es… I accept your apology in advance. For the record, I was amused by Visduh's image of blowing dirt off dirt yards--in fact, I have seen this very thing along First Av., in front of old condos. What I was referring to was Visduh's feeling that it was necessary to bring up the issue of racism yet again in Josh's blogs, perhaps because it is amusing to goad him into commenting?...: "On the topic of leaf blowers, Josh needs to remember that folks who wanted them banned were accused of being racist." Etc. Visduh knows enough about Josh's blogs to realize it would be easy to manipulate this conversation in that direction, and might or might not know that I tend to bow out when this topic emerges, due to unresolvable differences of opinion, and due to the tendency on these blogs of many to bring up race-related issues in a flip and irresponsible way, with no sensibility for facts or genuine desire to attempt to resolve anything.— July 1, 2009 10:08 a.m.

No one thinks that about you, magics--and this is the kind of linguistic event that makes language so interesting, and so hard to control. It makes me wonder if the negative term "dago" was at some point appropriated with pride by a group of Italians to name some businesses. If my apathy lets up, I just might look up where the term "dago" came from in the first place :)— June 30, 2009 4:17 p.m.

I totally agree about car alarms, but think it might be hard to set car alarms to not respond to the intensity of the vibrations coming out of these gas hogs. Yes, thanks for bringing up how their perspective offers yet more reason why they shouldn't be on the freeway. Bikes are dangerous, and because they always seem to be in squarely in everyone's blind spot--whether the driver is on maximum lookout or not--they can cause traffic accidents that endanger others, too.— June 30, 2009 3:56 p.m.
