Shameless Parents, Shameless Kids
"Sken, the whole purpose of forums is to share opinions..." Bingo, though I would add that the purpose is also to seek, define, and support. I'm questioning statements made with unsupported finality about a topic. There is no way I could have overlooked two years of research--unless it wasn't provided. No hard feelings, much less 'infuriated'--seriously! [waltzes/tangos/swings away] :)— November 1, 2009 10:01 p.m.

AG, yes, that's exactly it-- I meant to include a link for a review of the show AND some excerpts--which you've now included. There is a dreamy, meditative, and very acid-trippy quality to the entire performance, and we were glad that Twist & Co. picked up on this ancient form of puppetry and screen work--indigenous to a small Japanese island. I got to talk to a few of the puppeteers after the show; nearly as fun as watching :) Wow, thanks to nan for reminding me of my blogs--there was a comment from a guy who wrote a fantastic piece here for the travel section: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2009/sep/10/sp…— November 1, 2009 9:25 p.m.
9/11 Flashback with a Friend
Thanks for reading and commenting, Ben. I'm glad I came back to find your comment (thanks nan for reminding me of my blogs!). So yes, you got it-- I meant to treat this from a different kind of perspective--that of the intimate spaces we inhabit daily, and which we often forget necessarily play part in our interpretation of any event-- tragedy of horrific scale or no... For more writing treating a delicate sense of place and space, and for desert lovers, I would wholeheartedly recommend ben09reader's (Ben Hill's) piece: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2009/sep/10/sp…— November 1, 2009 9:18 p.m.

Nan, your poke in #34 might as well stand, as my blogs are pretty much graveyards at this point--but have at 'em. I'll write more, but am having a lot of fun reading everyone else's at the moment. Lawd, I thought "Darshan" was your real-world name! :) Have you, nan, and AG ever heard of Dogugaeshi? Ancient Japanese screen and puppet work? We saw Basil Twist recently at UCSD--amazing stuff: http://www.theatermania.com/content/news.cfm?int_…— November 1, 2009 8:48 p.m.

If you prefer to get into complexities and make a real meal (pun) of the subject go for it. skennerl, you are the one with the absolutist positions, and the info--I do not have your two years of research, and am just admitting I'm not about to conduct it. If you want to elaborate on any of it and offer links, I for one will check 'em out. "I thought the topic was of interest, but it embarrasses me to find otherwise." Cuddle, this is a bit coy, no? Sorta like saying to nan, "oh who are you referencing?" when you know who she's talking about. No one is totally interested in every aspect of a subject, and if you go back you'll see that I was just not interested in doing my own forensics on all of skennerl's positions--that's what links are for. As for your column, I wrote to contribute, and I wrote to question some across-the-board statements, as per usual.— November 1, 2009 8:14 p.m.

nan, are we talking Canada Air here? I had some major eardrum issues as a kid going back and forth on that airline :) Cuddle, if my being the first lonnnnggg response to your original topic did not show interest, welp, dunno what is. And you can shorten my name, or not, as is your wont. If you are p.o.'d because I question some absolutist statements about health or any topic, sorrrrryy. That's what we do here, among other dastardly things :)— November 1, 2009 7:59 p.m.

#18: "Psychologists who prepare a report on someone after a 1 hour interview..." re: #20: See above: "Your yuppie friends have not set boundaries," That's sort of my point, skennerl. Controlling variables is the devil of all details--in medicine of all kinds. How can you diagnose what these or any parents done or not done, or what their kids need, with your two-minute diagnosis about diet? "All my children have had the occasional tantrum" I must have mistaken your earlier point--thought you were saying that an occasional tantrum or acting out in a public place was totally avoidable through diet and some specific programs you might recommend. I won't be doing the footwork, as admittedly, I have no children of my own, and am not overly interested in the topic per se. If you had offered some links, I would have looked at them. Your suggestions in #20 sound practical, however, and all of your diagnoses are probably part of the same old complex docs, psychs, and parents have to consider when treating children.— November 1, 2009 7:41 p.m.
