re: #234: Non-sequitur, anyone? Gringo still asking to have his hide tanned in a Nabokov-off? ;)— November 27, 2009 12:53 a.m.
Tijuana's new Home Depot
"My world seemed like an endless series of off ramps sprouting McDonalds, SHELL stations and AM/PM's. It was all so bland, monotonous and depressing." Ahh, I know what you mean, Rangel (good to see you back, btw). Used to spend summers here in SD growing up, but the rest of the year in OC (Orange County), many 'communities' of which might be described exactly this way. "If you've ever hit a baseball with the 'wrong part' of a wooden baseball bat you'll know what I'm talking about." Yep, very painful vibes. Lovely description in the last part--sorry to hear about the sprawl. Maybe you can build a real moat around the PWS :)— November 27, 2009 12:46 a.m.
It's Better To Burn Out Than It Is To Fade
re: #231: Questions for Pete: Are you responding to another post somewhere here? And why did you post a link of that other guy instead of Neil, the man himself? I'm confused. Why are you saying there are two separate songs? I have a complete Neil Young collection, with only one version...— November 27, 2009 12:24 a.m.
Turkey Day
PS: Is it "Tofurkey" your Adventist relations ate? I will NEVER purchase one of these again. Some soy meat products are successful--the Tofurkey is NOT one of them.— November 27, 2009 12:17 a.m.
Turkey Day
I think the insult of the turkey is clear, though some further detail might have made it work for everyone. I can relate to this kind of issue, refried. As pescatarians (the only meat we eat is fish), we enjoy it when oyster stuffing is prepared for Thanksgiving with my family, but there have been a few minor, explosive incidents over spoons and portions: When it is time for everyone to line up and fill our plates, we've finally learned to request that we go first; otherwise, the serving spoon for the mashed potatoes gets dunked in the meat gravy or another meat dish, and then back in the potatoes. This thoughtless action has ruined many a dish for us--we can't eat it once it has touched meat. It took a few years to come to this arrangement, and not without some resentment on either side, as I feel that an important way to show caring is to be concerned with the comfort of others, and whether or not they are getting enough of what they like to eat and can eat. It might seem trivial, but food is often a form of and a metaphor for love and intimacy, and when people gather to eat, it should be together. By setting aside a separate dish for him alone, gringo's relations made it clear that he was being set aside as well--it was a way of saying, 'we don't wish to share this tradition with you.' Granted, their religion did not allow them to eat the meat, but in a situation in which he was already feeling rejected, this gesture just made it worse. The second issue for us involves the vegetarian dishes I make to bring to family gatherings, including Thanksgiving or Xmas (though being a large, loving extended family, we have many besides). I bring extra stuffing, in case they go with a sausage dressing any given year, and I make my prized mushroom miso rosemary gravy; sometimes an herbed bread pudding. These dishes of course fall prey to marauding meat-contaminated serving spoons, but the family loves my food, and meat-eaters will often snatch up every scrap of what I've made before the man and I can get any--leaving tons of meat dishes we can't eat. Sigh. Holiday gatherings can already be tense at moments, when the women are scurrying around, trying to coordinate the timing and temperatures of multiple dishes baking, roasting, and stovetop cooking. Add the tension between vegetarians and meat-eaters, and it can be a real drag. We've just about resolved it, though, and just being with my amazing brood of cousins, and their husbands and children, is definitely worth the trouble. :)— November 27, 2009 12:08 a.m.
Remains of the Day
CuddleFishikins, I love this, too. I am so sorry I forgot to ask about your grandmother this week; she must be comforted, and feel so loved, to have such a loyal granddaughter at her bedside. Lime salad? Care to share details of this? ;) We have a guest who isn't feeling well, and I'm not feeling well, so I just threw a Tofurky in the oven, and heated premade sides from Trader Joe's. Singularly bad, and all the crueler because the plate looks so pretty and colorful! My family will have had the usual traditional dinner, with perhaps a French Canadian traditional tortiere (heavily spiced, minced pork in flaky pie crust), and my Auntie P.'s mouthwatering creamed onions. When I called to wish all a happy day, my cousin reported that she had just roasted a bunch of poblanos, and was peeling them in preparation to make rellenos tomorrow, stuffed with cotija and some Italian cheeses. Perhaps a new tradition? :)— November 26, 2009 11:22 p.m.

Sexual awakening is just one kind of developmental or 'progressive' step portrayed in the film, rickey. Watch the film again. Reese Witherspoon's character, for example, enters 'color' through reading/studying. The sexual theme represents release from repression especially for the young'uns in that fertile rain, and as a natural first impulse, but it occurs alongside and is succeeded by changes in perception that are socio-political, religious, artistic and intellectual--of all creative aspects of humanity. I pity anyone who can only read adultery to be all that is going on with Joan Allen's character, especially in that scene in the diner, when Jeff Daniels's character paints her portrait.— November 26, 2009 3:07 a.m.

The Slightly Hodge-Podge Composition
re: #9: We can be the three non-driving musketeers! And again, why exactly are we in cities without great mass transit? ;) re: #9: Well, Ted Bundy. The sinister derives from its own incongruity with the soft, plush, dull name. re: #10: You *do* realize we have a Dave amongus? ;) re: #11: No Bens. A Ben/Benjamin broke my heart! ;( If I were going to have a child (not), Alistair seems nice for a boy or a girl.— November 26, 2009 12:58 a.m.
