Job Gains Shockingly Low. Double-Dip?
State, local, and now federal governments, are firing workers as fast as possible to the cheers of talking heads that somehow believe this disaster is caused by budget deficits. Now the private sector hires, unlike three years ago. Our governments are doing the firing. Government hiring fights unemployment. Government firing puts people out of work. Now that the stimulus money has been spent, we see this simple principle demonstrated.— July 8, 2011 4:03 p.m.
Manchester Didn't Rake in Big Bucks on Hotel Sale
Manchester certainly had his way with our local politicians. Even after the Oceanside fiasco, where he forced that impoverished town to pay him for the stuff that dreams are made of, governments keep considering his overblown schemes. These monster hotels ruin the character of our city. Thanks to years of effort by local activists, our coastal suburbs have restrictions that control size, and keep buildings human scale. Downtown is controlled by CCDC and the Port Authority, with the Navy also turning developer. These unelected entities seem to love big buildings, and big developers. I hope Manchester leaves town completely. May I suggest Texas?— June 23, 2011 2:28 p.m.
San Diego Economy: Not Much to Brag About
My nightly walks through the PB party zone suggest that the tourist and hospitality business is doing well, partly due to the return of the fleet recently, but also because of San Diego's new status as a international destination for young people. Long term, military cutbacks may slow our growth, but in the meantime, the return of our military from our overseas misadventures should help our local economy.— June 16, 2011 2:19 p.m.
In Assessing Chargers Options, Do Cost Comparisons
As of right now, there is no NFL. The League was only a set of agreements, and the owners won't meet those agreements. If the league explodes, not impossible with so much hot gas in the room, the stadium deal would also blow up. A new stadium will also need maintenance and improvements, and with a retractable roof and fancy TV screen, will likely cost more than the current stadium. Cheaper maintenance might be another reason to keep the present design and location. We should also consider the toxic waste underneath the present site. Long term this should be fixed perhaps, but this won't be cheap, Perhaps those proposing this think the end of the world is soon, so they might as well run up their credit cards.— May 21, 2011 5:57 p.m.
How Michael T. Pines Defies the Law
Mr. Censor, I libeled no one, alleged nothing. Where I come from, San Diego, suggesting someone seek a doctors help for unsound thoughts is not even an insult, but an offer to join the club. Psychiatric medication is pervasive, open discussion is needed, and should not be censored. I take the handle Psycholizard partly to provoke discussion, and partly to promote my rock band, which is concerned with understanding mental illness. All good rock bands are. Now libel is defined as deliberate untruth with malicious intent. I wish Mr. Pines well, my statements were a legal defense that doesn't work well in this state. Don't accuse me of libel without even specifying the deliberate untruth. I tell the truth. Mr. Censor, explain or apologize, you have my Email. Steve Merrill AKA Psycholizard, Psycho, Technolizard, Electrolizard, or just Lizard.— May 21, 2011 2:29 a.m.
How Michael T. Pines Defies the Law
My remarks above have been censored, note the "...". Naturally I must repeat and expand on the deleted remarks. [EDITED FOR LIBELOUS ALLEGATIONS...AGAIN] This condition does not mean that he has no grievance. only that all involved should urge him to seek help.....— May 20, 2011 9:20 a.m.
Taylor Guitars: The Inside Story
The dreadnought style is large for a reason, longer strings have more low note power. Fair warning, the only bad sounding Taylor I ever heard was one of these small ones. Aw, that is the cutest picture.— May 20, 2011 7:38 a.m.
How Michael T. Pines Defies the Law
Mr. Pines'...basic contention, that banks and their agents often operate illegally is obviously true.... Legal tip: fire any lawyer that calls the judge a criminal, unless he knows how much the judge will charge for a bribe. We hire our lawyers for their USEFUL knowledge.— May 19, 2011 4:21 p.m.
Reverend Stickman Wins Songwriting Competition
Congrats to the Reverend. Just a few years ago we knew him as a very versatile guitarist, now he has become an accomplished songwriter. The amount of song writing talent in this town is amazing, the winner in such a contest must be a matter of taste, but none can deny that he is a worthy winner.— May 18, 2011 9:50 p.m.
Filner For Mayor?
I would add that Fillner is the enemy of Juan Vargas, an important perp in the pension scandal. As a soldier in the fight to improve the VA, he fought for the powerless. when he fought for the Veterans rights of former US citizens, he fought for the voteless and powerless. When he spent three months in jail as a result of his freedom ride, he fought for the powerless. I don't see how Bob Filner could interfere with DA Dumanis legally unless there was a clear issue of civil rights. When there was a clear issue he has broken the law in the past for those rights. We need a champion to stand up to Dumanis and the machine, We must stand together behind that champion or be obliterated. If you don't like Filner who do you support? Those without a candidate might as well support Dumanis, because if we do nothing she will be mayor. She is not as weak, and is more twisted than Jerry Sanders.— May 18, 2011 6:12 p.m.
