Another Honest Journalist Canned by U-T
Hitting is central to football, and danger is part of the thrill, but that doesn't mean the game can't be made safer. The game now is like boxing with brass knuckles, only the ball carrier doesn't get to hit back. It seems almost cowardly. Rugby presents a more brutal spectacle, but may in fact be safer.— June 6, 2012 11:11 a.m.

The helmets and pads should be soft on the outside, to protect the ball carrier. Present day equipment is designed to protect only the wearer, and come as close to injuring the opponents as the rules allow. The game might never be safe, but good engineering could certainly make it safer.— June 6, 2012 1:38 a.m.

The scandal goes beyond the NFL, ten year olds play football. The sport can be reformed, and made stronger and better. This was done a hundred years ago, and no one misses the flying wedge. For parents of risk takers, a football remains a safer gift than the car keys, but football could use improved rules and equipment, like seat belts and airbags. Football could use a compelling journalist/advocate like Ralph Nader once was for the Auto industry. Sometimes blowhards save lives.— June 5, 2012 11:07 a.m.

The pads, helmets and cleats aren't safe, and cause injury, but there seems to be a code of silence that good journalism could break. If Mr. Sullivan has examined this I applaud him. Now that he has left the UT I might read him also.— June 4, 2012 8:18 p.m.

The truth will set you free, of your employer. Mr. Sullivan has won our respect, and lost his job. There is a book in the concussion story, and one in the UT disaster. He can put "fired from the UT" on the cover, and that will help sales.— June 4, 2012 10:35 a.m.
Seau Apparent Suicide Could be Watershed NFL Event
When Junior Seau first signed with the Chargers, for millions. the mother of a football player, who met him, lamented to me, 'Now that young man will never finish his college degree.'. That seemed funny at the time. Her son quit the USC football team and graduated. I think of Ajax and Achilles, and the Greek saying, 'Count no man lucky before the day he dies.'. All who love football loved him.— May 4, 2012 1:44 p.m.
Magazine Shows Stresses in L.A. Stadium Proposals
The present Stadium is a masterpiece of design, in the best location, the proposed replacement will very likely be inferior, at a huge price. The scheme involves plundering the City;s real estate assets, certainly the Stadium Mission Valley property, probably more. The City has nothing else to steal. The Chargers like the present Stadium location so much, they intend to keep the land for themselves. SAVE OUR STADIUM,— January 11, 2012 2:28 p.m.
Snug and Smug at the Hotel Del
I visited Occupy San Diego today, guitar in hand, and can report that idealism is alive and well. These protesters are amazingly well informed about banking and economics. For instance, when I mentioned that the Great Depression was ended only by the complete government economic takeover of WWII they nodded in agreement and added that the deficit far exceeded that of today. I spent most of my visit folding up this very sophisticated comic book for distribution. http://www.missionminicomix.com/2011/11/what-ever… I was very impressed overall. There's a demonstration planned for 430 Saturday at Children's Park downtown. These people are smart.— January 5, 2012 11:34 p.m.
Snug and Smug at the Hotel Del
OWS turned the focus on the corporate puppet masters and away from the puppet circus of the debt ceiling debate. Moving bodies on the street obviously does more than our clicking keyboards and those of Reich or Krugman etc. i wouldn't presume to give any advice, but following their lead, we should aim at the crooks lawyers defend. BREAK UP GOLDMAN SACHS.— January 5, 2012 12:10 p.m.
Snug and Smug at the Hotel Del
I'm ready to protest at the shyster securities lawyer convention. What we need is a list of the firms lawyering up. We might find tomorrow"s bankruptcies.— January 4, 2012 7:13 p.m.
