Oscar Re-Cap
Ugh. I knew Sean Penn was full of beans. Actors are such phonies. Read the editorial in today's paper. He is just promoting his movie, and should not be considered a viable spokesperson for gay rights.— February 25, 2009 1:51 p.m.
A sampling of San Diego's vanity license plates
There used to be a classic older Jaguar in San Jose that had the old black and yellow license plate that said "A PUSSY". Barbarella, could you have used a zero instead?— February 25, 2009 1:35 p.m.

I fought my inner geek for years! When I finally realized that I was not cool, it was like the flood gates opening! Geeky IS cool!!— February 24, 2009 7:25 a.m.

Oh, wasn't Sean Penn all mea culpa? I love him, but the guy can be a real jerk. I have to remind myself that these people are ACTORS. They can summon up a character at will to suit the mood of their surroundings. Maybe playing Harvey Milk gave the guy a good dose of humanity. Or maybe he was still in character....— February 24, 2009 7:22 a.m.
McDonald's in the News...and Domestic Abuse
EVERYONE has heard that statistic. It is even worse for second marriages. Somewhere above 60%. And it's the classic syndrome - "that would NEVER happen to US!". Anyone that sensitive to a little marriage ribbing right out of the gate is probably not ready for the "institution" of marriage.— February 24, 2009 7:16 a.m.

Neither do 50% of white children, eventually.— February 22, 2009 2:11 p.m.
McDonald's in the News...and Domestic Abuse
Extremely talented, successful black women have historically stayed with abusive men. Men who were also involved in show business who never did reach the pinacles achieved by the women they were involved with. Bobby Brown and Whitney, Ike Turner and Tina, Mike Tyson & Robin Givens (questionable success pinacle, but you get my drift), and many others over the years going back to the great Billy Holiday who was abused by every man she ever became involved with. Any theories as to why? My thinking is that this is just as prevalent in all races. It is still difficult for certain men to see the same success that has evaded them achieved by the women in their lives, so they beat them to "keep them in their place". These women spend an inordinate amount of time and energy trying to make sure that their success is not a threat to the men in their lives, creating a viscious cyle. Something I recently read: "those old dictates to "play dumb" "let the man win" or "pretend he's boss" - are out of vogue. But their message still remains a guiding rule that lurks in the unconscious of countless women: The weaker sex must protect the stronger sex from recognizing the strength of the weaker sex lest the stronger sex feel weakened by the strength of the weaker sex. Women learn to act weaker to help men feel stronger and to strengthen men by relinquishing their own strengths." I am sure many men will disagree, but you can do so just by the sheer virtue of being born male.— February 21, 2009 2:41 p.m.

Your comment about the mustache cracked me up. I said the exact same thing when I saw that photo. Me thinks one doth protest too much....— February 20, 2009 5:33 p.m.

Barbarella - have you ever considered going back to school and getting a MFA? You have a natural inclination toward the arts that you don't see everyday. Not that a piece of paper would be needed to validate your already considerable knowledge, but you could be a real, much-needed contributor to San Diego's dearth of fine arts.— February 20, 2009 9:53 a.m.
The Oscar Pool
Why don't you think Mickey Rourke will win? He is hands down the best actor this Oscar season.— February 17, 2009 5:37 p.m.
