So Long
Once away, not one away.— April 18, 2014 11:15 a.m.
William F. Buckley Dead at 82; In San Diego, He Complained of the Wine's Quality
"Buckley does not so much speak as exhale, but he exhales polysyllabically..." said Edwin Newman in one of his 1970s language books.— February 13, 2013 9:03 a.m.
So Long
I re-read it. If I were his editor, it would have gone out as "Duncan Shepherd Replies to the Least of His Critics." If he had replied to the greatest of his critics, I would have been impressed.— December 5, 2010 7:04 p.m.
So Long
I lived in Poway from 1969 to 1982 and had not even heard of the Reader, let alone Duncan, until I spotted them at UCSD in 1978. I have long believed San Diego should have more than one movie critic-essayist, with more than one vision of what a film should be. One away, I used the LA Times and The New Yorker to fill that need.— December 5, 2010 6:37 p.m.
Star Trek
I decided to hold off on watching "Star Trek" until I could see it on pay-per-view, mainly because the trailer at the local multiplex was TOO LOUD. I saw the original series as a small child in a small town; on occaison, I watched "Next Generation" or the other TV series, and saw all the movies. I enjoyed this prequel, but believe it needed less fighting and more character development. ***— December 21, 2009 6:55 a.m.
Which one of the following should taxes be raised on?
The surest way to crater the economy is to reduce demand, and for the forseeable future that means pump-priming. Don't wait until there's blood in the streets.— February 23, 2009 9:09 a.m.
Burn after Reading
Finally saw this one at home. I thought it worked well as a satire of the spy genre. I also enjoyed a whole cast of familiar talent going off in unfamniliar directions, particularly Brad Pitt. ***— January 23, 2009 11:50 a.m.
The Dark Knight
I finally caught The Dark Knight on pay-per-view, with the sound low enough not to induce ear trouble. For all the hullabaloo about this being a drug or a scripture to a lost generation, I was not sure what to expect. Unless I missed something, the strongest sentiments were those of the older generation, telling the younger one not to go to the dark side. *— December 27, 2008 8:22 p.m.
Quantum of Solace
My wife and I are coming to belive Daniel Craig is the best Bond actor. Here, Bond learns to restrin impulse, and see things from M's point of view. I was amused by the climactic difference between rainy England and bone-dry Haiti and Bolivia. ***— December 10, 2008 8:06 p.m.
Irredeemable Bond
There was a rumor that Lazenby turned down a longer contract, believing the series to be on its last legs. Anyone out there capable of confirming or denying this?— November 13, 2008 9:46 a.m.
