Marco Li Mandri wants to get around Prop 13
When was 30% of anything considered a majority. If anything it should be 50% + 1, the same standard for majority rule anywhere. But that would not into the model that Vargas and Li Mandri are trying to profit from. That's right profit off the taxes paid by citizens to support something government is suppose to be doing anyway. I question the notion government is collecting less because of Prop 13. Government is just spending well beyond it means because no one is really accountable.— April 25, 2012 3:43 p.m.
UCAN's Best Con
Just think if this story had seen the light of day way back in 2001-2002, maybe just maybe we would not be saddled with the fraud UCAN has been all these year since. Over and over I am amazed, or maybe just still naive on the ways frauds can be perpetrated on the public. Obviously the overarching theme is simple greed, but it's sad to read about those who knew a fraud was in progress but chose to remain silent. Are those who are aware, but remain silent as guilty as those who invent or facilitate these schemes???— April 11, 2012 9:03 a.m.
Pay Raises for City Council & Mayor Unanimously Rejected
I believe Councilperson Lightner said it best when she pointed out people who run for office aren't doing it for the money. The premise posed by the commission that salary is the driving factor to lure "well qualified and experience candidates" is also faulty. There are litterilly hundreds of people volunteering their time, experience and expertise to, and for the City, on Boards and Commissions without any compensation. Not to mention more than a thousand volunteers working for free within various City Departments. While I am not suguessting Councilmembers should work for free, they do have substantial well paid staffs supporting them, as well as generous budgets to run their offices. While these Councilmembers may not have hand in the disastrous financial decisions made by their predecessors, they certainly knew what shape the City was, and remains in financially. Until this and future Councils and Mayors restore City services to 2003 levels their total compensation should remain frozen too.— March 5, 2012 3:28 p.m.
The return of the Chargers scandals
Yikes! Poor Jack Norworth is spinning in his grave reading Fred's rewritten chorus. While I suppose it's creative in this context, cause Fred is a creative guy, it's shameful to be messin with some true Americana.— March 4, 2012 8 a.m.
Is $3000-$6000 Per Year Too Much for Veteran Parking Exemption?
Visduh this raises a legitimate concern ...if the "Veteran" plate used in this story causes confusion, what happens if the ordinance is passed. Will the folks in possession of those "Veteran" plate believe they are entitled to free metered parking? Will those who enforce the rules confuse the issue too?— March 1, 2012 1:25 p.m.
Big Money Landed in UCAN Misspelled Accounts
Maybe once, but several accounts? I doubt it. http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/environment/muck/a… But since Don wanted the journalistic completion so there it is from VOSD.— February 29, 2012 9:52 p.m.
New Signage for Shelter Island
I drove past it a couple of times today. It's not finished yet (missing the convex sail portions still) but it reminds me of the Art Deco look of the Loma Theaters' marquee (another Pt.Loma landmark) with its signage. Maybe the Port district will sell advertising space to Humphrey's for the upcoming concerts by the bay.— February 29, 2012 2:04 p.m.
New Signage for Shelter Island
Same place as before; center island just west of the intersection of Anchorage Ln and Shelter Island Dr. (just west of the Red Sails restaurant) I'm just wondering how long it's going to be till some DUI driver coming out of one of the Humphrey's concert wipes it out. It's one thing to have a low grassy center island, quite a bit different to have a lighted entryway signage to draw the attention of a driver who is under the influence. Guess time will tell the tale.— February 29, 2012 1:16 p.m.
UCAN to Undergo Court-Supervised Reorganization
"So when I [Michael Shames] am freed up to sit down with the media and talk about these events, it won't be with you [Don Bauder]." Don I never realized you were/are so formidable that a public figure like Michael Shames would coward at the thought of an interview with you. Too bad, I would love to read that piece on UCAN.— February 29, 2012 12:06 p.m.
UCAN to Undergo Court-Supervised Reorganization
WOW! I'm Just Wondering who has the bigger ego in the Bauder vs Shames bout. Although I did LAUGH OUT LOUD when I read Shames' comment posted at 11:06 a.m., Feb 29, 2012. There's no doubt in my mind Mr. Shames words will be parsed VERY CAREFULLY, with as many loopholes as legally and humanly possible in any statement released by UCAN.— February 29, 2012 12:01 p.m.
