Bring The Noize
Isn't a library the epitome of the "shhhh!" place? Also, people have to realize what they sound like on the cell phone. I naturally have a loud voice, and I naturally do a "cell yell"...assuming people can't hear me on my crappy cell phone. Therefore, I always take my conversations outside (even if it's not in a library). Wait a minute. Who goes to a library anymore? Go to a Starbucks or something. Oh wait...they're all closing. I forgot.— July 13, 2008 5:17 p.m.
The Ramsey Case
Thanks for that, jrw. I agree. And, I hate when people tell me, "Well, you'd get a lawyer too, if you were accused of a crime." Maybe, but that's not the point. These people did everything NOT to cooperate with the police. And to me, that's a red flag. You want to help the cops, not hinder them. And part of helping them, is clearing your name with them, so they can start looking in other directions.— July 13, 2008 11:17 a.m.
King of Documentaries
I'd like to see that. I was a bit disappointed with that Young@Heart. Something contrived about having old people sing songs like "I Wanna Be Sedated," and Sonic Youth and Talking Heads tunes. It had its moments, but wasn't great.— July 10, 2008 2:56 a.m.
King of Documentaries
Hey, thanks for the heads up 10speeds. I'll look for it. You should check out this documentary...dang..not sure I'll get the name right. Oh yeah, it's "Crazy Love". It should be called "Love is Blind." It's about a woman that was an artist. And model. I think in the early 60s. She got involved with a rich, married, Jewish dude. He was possessive. And, things went very, very wrong. That's all I'll say. Rent that documentary. It's an amazing film.— July 10, 2008 1:34 a.m.
Athletes and Actors in the News
Well, this way. Kiel sold drugs thru the mail. Being a drug dealer, is a lot different than being a drug user. That first. Second...I can see Kiel being a guy...like Lawrence Phillips, whose name I couldn't think of earlier...who would continue his life of being a thug. Morrison was hardly a thug. Did the world lose a wonderful person when Morrison died? I would say no. But, like that poor guy that died in El Cajon, when a car ran a red light, caused an accident, which resulted in a vehicle going thru his fence, and crushing him while he cleaned his pool (with a 3 year old son nearby). This is what Kiel almost did. That's how I justify a difference between the two personalities.— July 9, 2008 1:33 a.m.
Athletes and Actors in the News
Okay, let me clarify. If Michael Jackson DID molest a child (which has never been proven)...I would love for him to not be alive anymore. If Miles Davis, or any man, has hit a woman, I think they, too, should no longer be allowed on the planet. That may sound harsh. But, either that, or put them in therapy, and hardcore anger management, until they get a grip on reality. Because you don't ever need to hit a woman. Or anyone, unless you're in a boxing ring. And I think most adults aren't going to change...that's why I'm not one of those people that thinks you're going to rehabilitate the losers of society. So, when I hear they kill themselves in car crashes, I'm happy about it. That is, if nobody else was harmed. I can't imagine that Terrence Kiel, since he no longer had an NFL career to look forward to, was going to just get a 9 to 5 job as say...a plumber...and become an outstanding member of society. A perfect example is that running back for the Rams. Can't think of his name. He did all kinds of wacky things. Beat people up, did drugs, everything. He ended up out of the NFL, then in the CFL. The last I heard, a few years back, he was playing a pickup football game with young teenagers. He got mad at them, started fighting with them...got in his car, and tried to run them over. Is it a far stretch for me to imagine Kiel going down that same path? Yes, as a teenager, I owned Doors T-shirts. I still have a few. But, I think a person like Morrison was smart enough (had he lived), that he would've slowly been changing his lifestyle. Maybe he'd continue to drink, but he would be less of a danger to others. NFL players don't seem to grasp this.— July 8, 2008 12:15 p.m.
Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest
So...you know how that one hotdog company uses that weiner mobile? For this new "homeless" hotdog eating contest..I wonder if they would have a different vehicle. Maybe some old Cadillac, with rust all around it, that looks like someone is living in it. Oscar Meyer could be painted on the side of the door.— July 8, 2008 11:18 a.m.
Athletes and Actors in the News
Well Towel...the ONLY reason the clubs don't have more athletes shooting each other, is because they are often searched before going in!!! It happens all the time. My girlfriend used to work at a club, and when the Chargers had private parties, she told me sometimes they'd urinate where ever they were. Sometimes into cups, sometimes in the corner of the room. Other times, they'd just want to do what they want. In Carlsbad, right now, they have this NFL thing for rookies. They are showing the rookies how not to get into trouble. They are showing all clips of all the things that have happened recently, to try to show them how they can easily throw it all away. And, what happens? Two of these rookies get into a fight with each other. It's incredible. And...my point is this. If Kiel died in a car accident...that means he probably did stuff in cars that was a danger to other people. Miles Davis and Michael Jackson...I seriously doubt they ever did anything in a car that was dangerous to anyone. People don't realize that driving a vehicle 90 mph, while intoxicated, or whatever...is dangerous. To everyone on the road. It's a deadly weapon. And, anyone over the age of 20, should really know better. And if they don't, them not being alive, is better/safer for everyone.— July 8, 2008 11:15 a.m.
Athletes and Actors in the News
Well Towelhead...I sort of touched on that. Didn't realize Keil was now part of the 27 Club (hendrix, morrison, joplin, cobain all died at 27). That's a good point. You got me there. It's kind of how I got my mom when I was 15 in 1984, and she said "That Madonna is such a slut." And, she was reading a Marilyn Monroe book. I said, "So was Monroe." She tried to argue. But, Monroe slept with many men, to make it in the movie industry. In many ways, that makes Monroe worse. At least Madonna would have sex because she enjoys it, not to further her career. The Doors are my favorite group, so I'll use Morrison vs Kiel. Do I think the world is better with Jimbo dead? Well, Doors fans have argued with me, when I say he died at the perfect time, because he was such an alcoholic, his poetry kept getting more cryptic. He was becoming more bloated and weird, and depressed. He was an alcoholic. He had a problem. In those days, they didn't try to help people as much with problems like alcoholism. And, I think the fact that Morrison had a high IQ, and created art and music, added something to society. But, I love football. To me, NFL players put their safety and lives on the line, for the entertainment of geeks like me, that aren't good enough to play in the NFL. We get to enjoy them hitting each other, bruising their bones, and walking with limps the rest of their lives. So I value their contribution to society as well. Another thing Morrison did, similar to Kiel...he was always driving cars fast, while intoxicated (not that it's been proven Kiel was under any influence the evening of his death). Morrison hit a cop car once, and had been in many accidents. So in many ways, yeah...society is better off without Jim. And, he's the type of person that would not have seeked help. So even if AA was around back then...he admired poets like Lord Byron, that drank themselves to death. That's the way he wanted to go. I think at the end of the day, I have to say yes, you have a point. But, the problem is this. A person like Hendrix was a genius with a guitar. He was innovative and did things that had never been done before. And...he wasn't someone that's first instinct was to punch someone. A lot of these athletes, that's what they do. If they don't agree with someone, they punch, or pull out guns. It's not just the drugs. It's them being thugs. The musicians aren't thugs. Regarding how they treat women...yeah, that's bad. But, groupies are around in every profession. I saw a documentary on comedians once, and they talked about their groupies. One was talking about sleeping with Carrot Top and Emo Phillips and you laugh, wondering why anybody would sleep with them. And you realize...if people have fans, they probably have women willing to sleep with them. And if you have that, you probably have guys that don't treat them with respect. It's a vicious circle.— July 8, 2008 11:09 a.m.
Athletes and Actors in the News
I actually think foxy makes some good points. And some bad ones. I'll try to address them all: Yes, there are far worse people in the world then Terrence Kiel. I want them gone, too. Anyone worse then Terrence Kiel, I do not want here. That means athletes that get into fights with people...like the football player that tried to beat up the Taco Bell employee who gave him the wrong order. Now, you might say..."why do you want that person dead, just because they tried to beat somebody up?" Well, here's why. If your instinct is to try to climb thru the window and beat them up, or pull out a gun, society is better off without you. Union-Tribune. Well, they've been laying people off. So, it might sound more presitigious to work for a newspaper then a weekly, but both are paying gigs. Just because one is free, doesn't mean anything. Do you think a writer for Sports Illustrated makes more or less then someone at Rolling Stone, just because one sells for $2.98 and the other for $4.98? The Union-Tribune is $.50. The Reader is free. And guess which one more people probably pick up? Regarding the Catholic church...I'm not Catholic. But I do agree, that a lot of the religions, have problems in the people in the church they look up to. Rock musicians. Very good point. I'm a fan of many. And, many of them, do the same types of things these athletes do. Yet I'm often knocking the athletes. I guess that's because drugs, often times, are victimless crimes (if they are just smoking pot or whatever they are doing). Athletes seem to go to clubs, and shoot people!!! You mention athletes fighting dogs. Well, I did a blog on that. And, I think Michael Vick is worse than Terrence was. Not just because of the dogs, but he had a history of bad decisions. I think the planet would be better off without him, too. And, it's a shame that when he gets out of prison, he'll probably become a rich man again. It may be in football, it may be doing commercials, or some reality show...but somehow, he'll make a million bucks. And that's sad. You mention A.J. Smith...well, I guarantee you, the Chargers staff probably doesn't care about Kiel being dead. They have PR and things they have to say at this time. And, they're saying it. They rid themselves of this guy, and for good reason. And, no other NFL team touched him. For good reason. When someone dies, everybody says glowing things about him. I have no doubt in my mind, that Kiel did some wonderful things as a person. Most people have many sides to them. He was probably great to his family. He probably gave to charities. Or his old school. But you know what? I think he probably did more bad things than good...and it's people like that, that make society such a crappy place to live. It makes road rage incidents occur. People talking in a movie theatre. Shootings, etc etc etc.— July 8, 2008 10:44 a.m.
