Did anyone get a T-shirt for something John B wrote in his column? I'm not sure if it would qualify as a typo. But he mentioned a soda that he loved as a kid. And says something like "Nothing is better. Not booze, or Royal Crown Soda." Yet...it was Royal Crown Soda that he initially mentioned, so I think he meant to write another beverage there.— September 3, 2008 11:12 p.m.
Top 10 Overrated Movies
Well, those last three movies you mentioned, got horrible reviews. But...seriously, watch Friday again. It really isn't funny. I dunno...maybe you need to be stoned when you watch it. But, something about two guys sitting on a porch, hiding their jewelry before one guy rolls up on his bike, because he'll beat them up and steal it, just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I'm all for silly comedies. If they are done well. I liked 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and things like that. If they are well written. I liked the parody film: Don't be a Menace to Society While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.— September 3, 2008 10:30 a.m.
Fantasy Football - Rockport Running Rebels Rule!
Well...This is going to sound arrogant. But, I usually finish in the top 3 most seasons. I've won it all probably 7 times. I've had three times where I didn't finish in the top 3. One of those seasons, was when I had Marino at QB getting lots of TDs, and Emmitt Smith running in lots of TDs. I started the season 8 - 0. And, then, I only ended up winning one more game the second half of the season.— September 2, 2008 10:22 p.m.
Dive Bar Dwellers
Darling Nikki also reminded me of someone a lot like in that song, now that ya bring it up. But, here's what's so funny about people. You can always tell when their stories are BS. Perfect example...she didn't call my friend up and say "You aren't going to believe this. My bosses fired me, because they saw the story in the Reader, and thought it was a bad representation of the company." He had texted her about something, and she said "Tell Josh thanks for the story. It created problems at work." He texted back "What problems?" Her response was "Terminated". No other explanation. People don't just do that. They would explain the story. I heard on my voice mail from one person about a party, years ago...their boss loved it and wanted extra copies. Another person, their boss didn't like his picture in their holding a beer, and talking about how wasted he got. But since the company wasn't mentioned, the boss said that was fine. Although, the guy told me he got nervous when he was in his office "discussing" it.— September 2, 2008 12:28 a.m.
Pregnant Parking, Wasps' Nests, Suggested Donations, "Arms" Hotels
Well Ponzi, if you spread the Reader out, that's fine. Just don't make too wide of a stance. You'll run into a Senator Craig in the next stall over.— August 31, 2008 3:09 p.m.
Barbie vs. Bratz
Touche. Although, the difference is...this guy is working for a "doll" company, and designing another "doll." Maybe that would make sense if I was in a cubicle in the Reader offices. I was running late on a deadline, and the boss comes over, and sees I'm working on a story for the New Yorker. Although, those jerks don't publish most of my stuff. And, my boss could say, "Hey, we're paying you to write a story for us, not some pretensious magazine in another state. That story on the computer, is now our intellectual property." At which point they'd read the story, and realize the word "intellectual" has no business being uttered in anything I write.— August 31, 2008 3:07 p.m.
Strike Three! You're Out! A 9-year-old pitching sensation.
My stepbrother taught in south central L.A. for 9 years. And...he basically says, the kids don't want to learn. And, the parents have created the slums they live in. It's not just a matter of them not having money, it's the style of life they are choosing to live. Adam Carolla used to say this. And, I'm not sure how he didn't get people protesting his radio studio when he did. But he said if you move a bunch of Asians and Jews into those slum areas, they probably wouldn't be slum areas for long. Even if it was Asians and Jews without money. I'm not sure if that even makes sense, but it always made me laugh when he said it.— August 31, 2008 12:47 p.m.
Strike Three! You're Out! A 9-year-old pitching sensation.
That's funny. Yeah, you're right. You've proven that you have a brain, and seem to think about the issues. But, out of curiosity...your opinion on that topic, about universities lowering the test scores for certain minorities, since they feel there's an added value in diversity.— August 31, 2008 2:59 a.m.
Pregnant Parking, Wasps' Nests, Suggested Donations, "Arms" Hotels
You mention to thinks of interest, Ponzi. First..."courtesy". I found it odd that Mathew Alice answered the initial question focusing on "courtesy". When, in fact, it was just a question on if there's a stiff fine. Doesn't necessarily mean the letter writer wanted to jump on those spots. Or that the letter writer was even male. Second...I always laugh at LA Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness, you see a bunch of cars parked by the front door. You are going there to "work out" yet I guess they feel walking the extra 800 feet in the parking lot, isn't the work-out they wanted! Regarding disabled parking, you also nailed it. My friend got a placard for a knee/ankle injury that was severe. Yet, he lied, and got it updated for years and years afterwards. When we all gave him crap about that, he said he only uses it when there's no parking he can find downtown, and situations like that. I doubt it, though. And...sometimes cops, have to use better judgement on ticketing in disabled spots. My friend ran into his office on Miramar Road. It was Sunday at 10 p.m. No other cars in sight. He parked in the handicap spot, ran into his office for two minutes. Came out, and a cop is ticketing his car. Now, ticketing someone when it's a none-business hour at a business, when clearly there are no other cars in the lot (let alone handicap spaces), is just insane. Sure, he could've parked a few spaces over and been fine, but still. And lastly....a common misbelief is that YOU CANNOT use the disabled stalls in bathroom. In fact, you can. So don't feel guilty about going in there. They are just built that way so that the disabled can use them. NOT like the parking spaces, where ONLY the disabled can use them. So...pee away. With all that extra space to enjoy!— August 30, 2008 6:11 p.m.
Jack in the Box, Rubio’s, Charlotte Russe, WD-40, and Callaway Golf face a double whammy:
Regarding those profits...I probably remembered the numbers wrong. My bad. I just remember thinking they were so huge. And, at his Point Loma Subway, the students from the high school would buy a Coke, and get a bunch of refills. Wouldn't purchase a sandwich. I asked him if it bothered him, and he said "When it costs me 7 cents a Coke, and I sell it for $1,25, no...it doesn't. They can't drink enough to kill that kind of profit." He probably just said it off the cuff. Regarding drive-thru's and fast food, when I worked at McDonald's, I always loved on weekends, going to Corvette Diner (love them chili cheese fries), and Kooky's diner on Miramar Road. And, a friend told me that those types of diners went out of business back then, because of fast food restaurants. I found that interesting. And lastly...how insane was it that Jack in the Box tried to make those "upscale" versions of their "restaurant". That lasted about 3 months.— August 30, 2008 6:05 p.m.
