Shark Sandwiches and Drug Busts
Uh...no. I guess not. If I had to hazard a guess, with people that regularly go into the ocean (not just someone on a vacation that goes ankle deep into the beach at La Jolla) -- that would include surfers, swimmers, etc...I would guess shark attacks are probably 1 in 1,000. Maybe just under that.— June 22, 2009 2:56 p.m.
Top 10 -- Famous Dead People You'd Like to Meet
It wasn't like Hemmingway was one of my favorite authors, per se. I just think, of all writers, he has the best adventure stories to share. It's so funny you mentioned Jayne Mansfield. When I was typing my list of attractive, old-school actress/pin-up types, I couldn't think of her name. I just kept saying "She was decapitated in a car accident, and had blonde hair." I met Strummer, months before he died. I was so glad, as I'm a huge Clash fan. Although...it's one of the rare times I might a musical idol and didn't have all that much to say to him. Partly because he said he had a fever and was feeling horrible. So, I didn't want to talk his ear off. I had him sign London Calling and another album, and just went on my way. Not sure why you'd want to meet Sid Vicious. Now, Syd Barret I'd understand!— June 22, 2009 10 a.m.
An $80,000 Song. And a Dead Pilot.
Well, as someone that was fascinated by album covers...whether that was Roger Dean painting some magical creatures, or a photographer with some abstract photo that seemingly has nothing to do with the band... And now it's folding out a CD sleeve, with is usually just so many liner notes written in such a small font, I can barely read it. I did have a friend burn me a few CDs, and I was buying the songs for $1.99 or whatever it was. But, you bring up a good point. I remember when used CD places were being threatened by record companies, because someone could buy a used CD of a band, and that band is getting zero on that sale. Well, some smart chap did a bit of research, and they found out something interesting. If you're a fan of Dave Mathews, you're buying the new CD when it comes out. It's the person that likes two or three songs, but never bought the CD, that decides it's worth a shot for $8 at the used CD store. And often times, that makes them become a fan, who in turn buys a concert ticket. Or the new CD when it does come out. It was a cheap way for people to preview the music.— June 22, 2009 12:55 a.m.
Volcano Energy, Made From Scratch, Freeway Sign Mileage
I seem to remember a Super Bowl commercial years ago that had Clydesdale horses playing football. That would've been the perfect use of a zebra, playing the referee (although, my memory is hazy...maybe they did to that and I'm just not remembering). You bring up a good point, MA. As a little boy, I thought similar things when my parents would throw us into the petting zoo section of the parks. I was scared to death, as an evil goat with a limp was running me down nipping at my arms. I figured they didn't want to be there, having a bunch of brats pet them, poke their eyes, yank their tails, etc. And neither did we!!!— June 22, 2009 12:48 a.m.
Nice to Meet
It's strange, because I don't recall a single review of 6th Sense saying anything like "A dead pyschiatrist helps a young boy that can see ghosts..." And I contend, even in a review of a film like that, you shouldn't mention a "twist" or "surprise" ending, because you may also ruin things that way. I have seen some critics that say they can't tell you much about the film, without ruining it. And in that case, you can just focus on an aspect of the movie that doesn't deal with the story. That could be yet another solid acting performance by Sam Rockwell (who will surely get nominated for an Oscar for this...although, he could technically get one for Best Actor and/or Best Supporting Actor).— June 22, 2009 12:42 a.m.
Swift Serenade
A few other things from Luke Walton (not the former San Diegan that's now playing for the Lakers, and was pursued at one time by Britney Spears): Did your parents worry about you having your contact information and face on the video? “No. I’m 18 now, and…they’ve always been supportive. They let me convert the dining room into an office recently. I’m going to USC in the fall. I’m one of only 14 students chosen for this pilot major. I’m going to be majoring in ‘Popular Music’. It was a 3-tier process to be accepted. I had to send a video of me performing original songs. Then I had to audition, and finally there was a phone interview.” I’m guessing one of the songs you sent in wasn’t about Taylor. Any plans to audition for American Idol? “I’ve had people ask me about that. I figure I’ll wait a few more years, until I get my vocal chops down.”— June 22, 2009 12:38 a.m.
Conspiracy Theories
I don't want to waste a nice Sunday afternoon responding at any great length to your continued idiotic rants. I know, I know. SD probably learns something form 'em. But I don't. I will say this, though. The number of people doesn't really matter. You see, a lot of people assume that you just do what the hijackers say, and everyone will be untouched. That's the reason that last plane DID have a few passengers charge the cockpit. Because once they realized that the hijackers didn't have demands, just intent on crashing a plane into a building, they tried to overtake them. And, you saw how that turned out. The plane went down. Which is EXACTLY WHY the planes that hit the world trade centers, had passengers doing what the hijackers said. They probably had a box cutter to a pilots throat, and what would be accomplished by charging them? The first few guys get stabbed. The pilot gets his throat slit, and then eventually, 25 people jump on the rest of the hijackers, as the plane is spiralling towards the ground. So, one hijackers, with no gun but the right plan, could hijack a plane. It's almost like the video you see of people robbing liquor stores. Some store owners fight back. And succeed. Others fight back, and die. But one thing is for sure...if they just hand the money over without trying to fight, it improves their chances of survival significantly. And lastly...I sure hope I don't have to say this, as the thought of you raising someone in this world scares me. But...Happy Father's Day.— June 21, 2009 6:17 p.m.

Nice to Meet
The review of Moon in here is right on. Especially the line "stretched out to just barely endurable length." But Duncan mentions something in the review that is a big-time spoiler to anyone that hasn't seen the film. Not sure why he did that.— June 20, 2009 11:24 a.m.
Top 10 -- Famous Dead People You'd Like to Meet
Nice list. Although, we have to subtract your grandparents, as they aren't "famous". And, everyone would have a relative on their pick. So, you gots one more to give us!— June 20, 2009 5:53 a.m.
