President Obama is Stupidly
Spliff...here's the thing you're not getting. There can be one racist incident. That's hardly indicitive of everything else going on in the country. You can have one bad cop, and it's not a reflection of the police force in this country. My liberal, retired lawyer (white lady) friend...she actually believes like you, Spliff. That cops are running around planting evidence and framing people. It seriously baffles my mind, that grown adults that can think, think this way. I have NO DOUBT that a cop will lie to save his butt. It's one of the reasons I give that cop who shot the Charger credit. He didn't lie, and in the process, made himself look very bad. But that doesn't mean cops are doing the WRONG thing and then lying about it. Or that they're planting evidence, to bolster their cases. Society just doesn't work that way. It isn't worth it for a cop, to risk losing his job or doing jail time. Have you seen the footage of that cop stopping the black ambulance driver? This cop is wrong for about 100 reasons. He's right on one...apparently, the ambulance was driving fast and not obeying traffic laws, without it's emergency devices on. Yet, this cop did a crappy job of evaluating the situation. The black ambulance driver DID A GREAT job of calmly explaining the situation. The victim in the ambulance had family, that also calmly explained the situation. And this cop went nuts, started choking people. His butt should be fired, and possibly in jail, for having so much attitude in this situation. But, I don't immediately jump to a conclusion that was based on race. It was based on a stupid cop who wasn't doing his job well. Who is to say that same thing wouldn't have happened with a white ambulance driver?— July 24, 2009 11:42 a.m.

Russl....I don't think it's a big deal that Spliff put "idea" instead of "ID". Those are the kinds of typos I'm the king of. I'll be the first to admit that. Sometimes your fingers just type the word you're more comfortable or used to typing (we did this in court reporting school all the time). And I hate to say this...but spliff actually brings up a decent point. PistolPete initially said things I agreed with, but then went on some really racist rants that I didn't want to be a part of. So, I just ignored what pete was saying (whether it was "white TV" or whatever). And, it's really not fair for us to give Spliff crap in getting upset over those things pete wrote. So Spliff, I'm with ya on this one (well, one that one aspect of this). But really Spliff...I think you just admitted what I've wanted you to for the longest time. You say Gates is a Harvard professor and is smart enough to show ID. Yet, that's what baffles everyone (that is using their brain/common sense). That he didn't. Instead of saying "Oh wow...cool. My friend and I were trying to break into my door because it was stuck, and I didn't have the right key because I just got back from vacation. But yeah...here's my ID. Sorry you guys had to come out to investigate." Had those words flowed from Gates mouth, the cops might not have believed him. They might have (and you can't fault a cop for not believing...what is the #1 thing a person says that has stolen a car? "Oh...my friend let me borrow it." so saying you "live there" isn't enough for cops. They want ID. They want to know WHY you were pushing on the door. The answer you can't give is: "It's my damn door, I'll do what I want to it."— July 24, 2009 11:35 a.m.

and highrock...I do think there are times when race still plays a factor in things. for example, this recent thing at a swimming pool/country club. i forget where. black kids from an inner city school, signed up for a thing where they go there swimming during the summer. after one day of doing that, the club cancelled, "claiming" they were overbooked, or they didn't realize how many kids there would be. one little boy named Marcus, the cutest kid you'd ever see, was crying on CNN as he talked about what he heard some of the club members say about him. i think EVERYONE involved at that country club, should be fired. and I don't buy for a second, that it wasn't racial. I think the kids were probably being loud...because that's what kids do at swimming pools. and when some club members thought, because of perhaps racist views, that it was because they were minorities....the club just decided to go this direction. i'm not sure why that story isn't still being talked about. or why that club didn't fire anyone involved that did the wrong thing.— July 24, 2009 11:04 a.m.

Spliff: if the system is so "corrupt" as you say, how did you get out of the 18 of 20 tickets you got? Wouldn't you be 0 for 20, as the judge and system, would see you were "black" and find you guilty? (according to your logic) Thanks for the story, highrock. It's what I tell my black friends when we debate these issues. I've dealt with cops that were jerks to me as well. And I was nothing but nice to them. The cops might be thinking (with your case), the same thing they think with car alarms. "Why can't people figure out how to work these, so we don't get noise complaint calls on them or go out thinking a burglary is in progress." You can never judge WHY a cop might be mad. I will say this. I think the officer...Crowley is his name I think...should sue gates civily. He can now make a lot of claims against this guy. Maybe give Gates a taste of his own medicine, and sue for having your name dragged thru the mud. It's obviously too late for the police to NOW charge Gates (which I'm sure they regret, at this point).— July 24, 2009 11 a.m.
President Obama is Stupidly
Oh believe me, anti...I was most definitely, including myself in the "get a life" line. Please don't tell me you watch Craig Ferguson. He's awful. Just saw a clip of Obama talking to Nightline. He said he's surprised his comments have created such controversy and he stands by them. He added that he doesn't know why a middle-aged man that uses a cane, would need to be handcuffed. I guess then, that 70-year-old I saw arrested for child molestation, should've been picked up to go to jail in a nice, comfortable old Buick or Caddy. Maybe women shouldn't be handcuffed, either. Or at least not petite women, as they aren't much of a risk to hurt anyone. You're right, anti. Obama should keep his yap shut on this issue. Going to bed. And anti...I get press passes for Comic Con and write about it for a publication, so that's my excuse. And I'm stickin' to it! night night.— July 24, 2009 1:23 a.m.

Mine does. It has a hand crank on the front, and a cranky guy typing on it! Sorry refried. Yeah..I kinda liked your little airplane story/joke. My only problem with it was...it gives Bush more credit than I'd prefer. I'm not a big fan of the dude. Thanks for answering, anti. It's funny...because a few talking heads were upset that Obama commented on something, I can't remember what now. It was something like the last episode of Lost. I forgot what, maybe the Tonight Show having Conan. These people said "He needs to stop making himself available to comment on every pop-culture thing going on." But I kinda liked that. It gave that hip factor, a helluva lot more than when Clinton played one of the few goofy songs he knows on the sax, on Arsenio Halls show (side note: what happened to Arsenio? I kinda liked his sense of humor, and only see him on showings of Coming to America on TNT) I have no problem with a President comment on ANYTHING. I like it. I just wish he gave a better answer. Why keep his yap shut, just because it might not sound PC? I would've had no problem with him saying: I know Mr. Gates, and find it very hard to believe he would act in any way that would warrant an arrest. And it seems odd that a resident would be arrested for supposedly breaking into his own house. But, we have to assume the police did everything right, just as we assume people arrested and going to trial, get the benefit of being 'innocent until proven guilty'. I know there are some cases in the country, where people get harassed more because they're a minority. And I sure hope this wasn't an example of that." That would've been the perfect answer. And I came up with it in one minute, at 1:00 a.m.!!! Speaking of 1:00 a.m....what the hell are we all doing up at this hour? Since I was at Comic Con today, I'll invoke the words of James Tiberius Kirk and say "Get a life!!!"— July 24, 2009 12:57 a.m.
A Static Charge
Pistol...I always kinda liked the Packers and Bret Favre. Until Favre went nuts and couldn't decide if he retired or not. Oh..and also when that amazing defensive player...forget his name, died a few years back...ranted about a bunch of racist crap. And it kills me when Charger fans don't realize how much smack a person like Rivers talks. It's unbelievable. And when LT had his little meltdown, after the Patriots did the Merriman dance. I actually loved that. IT should've taught them a lesson, but it didn't. Fred...football is a blast. You're missing the boat on this one. I mean, I can sort of understand your anger at all that stadium BS that goes along with sports, but still. That stuff goes on in lots of forms of entertainment. And Spliff...geez. Do you realize how insane you sound in all these rants? Football players are handsomely paid.— July 24, 2009 12:46 a.m.

SD: sounds interesting, watching a film in the desert. the head of the san diego film society, tells a great story when he was a PR guy for Charleton Heston. they screened 10 Commandments in a desert or somewhere like that. all for the foreign press. and, a huge storm came, and was tearing apart the film screen as it showed. this guy figured he was fired for setting all this up, and Heston made some great joke (sorry, i can't remember now what it was), about God and Moses, and the wind, etc. the foreign press all quoted that, and made it the major headline of all their newspapers. wow...i just realized stories suck when I don't remember all the details.— July 24, 2009 12:36 a.m.

SD: I haven't read the book, or I'd comment on it. But, what's the book all about? Give us the scoop. And anti...what was your opinon of Obama saying the cops acted "stupidly." And what's your opinon of cops investigating a burglary call from a neighbor. And a neighbor telling the media "the guy was acting crazy, the cops were calm" (that's not an exact quote, so I can't give the site)— July 24, 2009 12:30 a.m.
