U-T Continues To Overstate Its Circulation Publicly, but a Potential Buyer Won't Be Fooled
BTW-the property. You can easily break the property out based on market values. SO even if you were to include any property, that is not going to affect the value of the UT itself. Simply break out the property value-which I am sure is not rock bottom in La Jolla. Don, how many buildings does the UT have in LJ-2? I think I know where they are located but not sure-what area/street are they on??— August 16, 2008 3:54 p.m.
U-T Continues To Overstate Its Circulation Publicly, but a Potential Buyer Won't Be Fooled
The question, again, is whether the paper has negative cash flow. If so, the valuation is very low. But $20 million to $30 million sounds extremely low. =================== If there is no cash flow, and there is little/no upside or upside is risky at best for improving cash flows, then I don't even see how $20 to $30 million would be worth it. $30 million is serious cash. Im no media guy so I have no idea what the paper is worth, but I do know how to value a business-any business-based on cash flows and the strength of the cash flows. If the UT has negative cash flow with little upside $30 million is too much. For any busines.— August 16, 2008 3:50 p.m.

the pension ranged from 2.2% at 50 to 2.77% at 55. I believe that percentage was instituted in the early 80's. MP1 changed that to 2.5% at 50 to 2.9999% at 55. In other words, the net change at 55 was a less than 10% increase. (2.99-2.77=.22 increase) Quoting from the Corbett settlement "Your Retirement Calculation will increase from 2.5% at age 50 to 3% at age 50". Corbett also increased payments to previous retirees by 7%. ========================== 2.2%@50 to 3%@50 is a 40% increase-that is a huge increase. And the worst part-it was RETROACTIVE. Whi John Moorlach from OC County is sueing over right now. I know the lawsuit, the first one (Corbett?), was over the pension increases, because some cops who retired BEFORE the increases felt the should also receive them and sued....andlost.— August 16, 2008 3:40 p.m.
San Diego Continues Losing Jobs; Unemployment Rate in July Was 6.4 Percent, Above Nation's 6.0 Percent
God help us...How about some good news for a change? ============================== LOL.... X2— August 16, 2008 8:35 a.m.
San Diego Is Chargers' Problem
What makes you think that the Spanos family would give up even 1% of the best investment they've ever made? You've accused them of many things over the years, but never being poor businessmen. ======================= You cannot seriously think the Spanos family are great business people can you??? They own a pro sports team. Teams which during the last 30 years have enrighed the few (themselves) at the expense of the many-mostly the poor and working middle class- through the funding of billion dollar stadiums, more often than not with a sales tax increase-the most regressive tax there is. In fact our esteemed President Bush "made" (as in ripped off) his $15 million dollars off the Texas Rangers by just such a scam- build a baseball stadium for billionaires and make the poor pay for it through a local sales tax. I have said it a million times before, if the Spanos Crime Family wants a new stadium they can BUILD IT THEMSELVES. The taxpayers are not the bankers or Sugar Daddy for the Spanos Crime Family.— August 15, 2008 6:43 p.m.

Johnny, you may not have heard, but large portions of CA are/were on fire. Firefighters from SD have been working across the state for the past two months. So what was your question? =============== I thought the Yosemite fire was the only big fire...... So anyway. The old pension was 2%@55, you said it was like 2.99% or something, I beieve that is wrong. Ths issue is what the 1996 lawsuit was over-cops and FF's retiring before 1996 wanted the 3% multiplier instea of 2%. They lost.— August 15, 2008 11:59 a.m.

Bad News for Copley, Good for KUSI: Cox Selling Austin, Other Papers Amid Gloomier Newspaper Environment
David Copley is stuck between a rock and hard place. Much of it his own doing. His paper is declining in value, and if he sells it will be for peanuts. And there is really nothing he can do about it, or very little. If Copley was a hands on manager, a competent manager, he could work his tail off and try to turn things around-with strong leadership from the top. Unfortunately he has incompetents running the paper and he could never run it himself with any degree of success. At a time when daily papers should be trying to increase circulation, the UT is alienating readership with partisan yellow journalism. That simply will not work today because the UT is NO LONGER the big gun in town. There are just too many options for readers. The internet has changed that. In spades. So, I see David Copley losing control by a low ball sale of the paper, or outright losing it for lack of positive cash flow. It is a sinking ship with no captain to right it. Time will tell.— August 14, 2008 5:31 p.m.
San Diegans pay sunshine tax
CFO's are bean counters-nothing more. They should be paid bean counter wages. Let's start allowing a bunch of illegals in from India or some other nation and give them some CFO jobs at 1/1000th of the current rate (they would do it for even less than that I am sure) and see how the CFO's like things. Come to think of it, lets do that with the CEO's too! I think the protection of American jobs and the realization of FAIR wages, including those in upper mamangement, would show a big improvement.— August 14, 2008 3:40 p.m.

Ron Saathoff is the one who is most liable for conflict of interest and deserves time in the Joint for it. Don, Mike Aguirre is doing a poll on the penion benefits; http://docs.sandiego.gov/search/cityattorney/pens… I am shocked that 89% are against the lawsuits to cancel them-you think the unions are skewing the numebrs (I could easily see the UNIONS RUNNING a campaign to rig it by getting all their members nad family to vote).— August 14, 2008 12:15 p.m.
