Buyouts Didn’t Help U-T and Petco
Touching on a point raised earlier; the effect of women entering the workforce, I suggest folks take a look at a book by Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts candidate running for Ted Kennedy's Senate seat. The book is "The Two-Income Trap: why middle class mothers and fathers are going broke." The book makes several good points, one of which is how home prices went up as soon as women started bringing in a second paycheck. Seems the market moves to keep us all sufficiently in debt. Incidentally, I think people should keep an eye on Mrs. Warren; I think I see the first female President.

Let’s Build an Even Bigger Jack in the Box in North Park
Why would that matter? If a rebuild voids the grandfather element, wouldn't that put Jack under current regulations?

This Week in Movies:
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Albert Nobbs, A Separation
I don't know what you guys are looking at, but if you think Hillary Swank has a man-face, then I don't know what to tell you. Hillary is a doll. A bit androgynous, but still, a cutie. I will admit there is nothing especially feminine about Glenn Close's face, but it is still far, far from being convincingly manly, or even slightly masculine. Let's be honest; the poor woman has a face like a proboscis monkey--but it's still not a man's face. They may give her an Oscar for "Being Albert," but I still think the entire film is based on "Let's make believe". David, as for "Separation," I didn't miss the movie; I sort of wish I had...but..and this is not to take anything away from those who risk their lives making movies, but, to say a film that presents a view of everyday life in Iran is good because it does...well, that's like saying the current reality shows like "Swamp People," or "Ragin'Cajuns" should get awards for their view of life in that part of Loosi-anna. Seriously? And what about that ending? The primary question throughout the film is left hanging? For us to resolve, no doubt. The "Artistic" finish. Give me a break. Look, I would like to see things open up in Iran and all the artists there be free to show the world they too have rich imaginations, and are equally capable of presenting truly profound works, of a rich and complex beauty that only their culture can provide...but let's not lower the bar and claim certain films are extraordinary simply because they were made at all.

This Week in Movies:
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Albert Nobbs, A Separation
Let's be honest: anyone who looks at Glen Close for one minute and thinks she is a man must be on drugs. That film presumes the audience is willing to go along with the charade for the sake of the movie, but I just felt like I was participating in some childish nonsense the whole way through. What a farce. As for "Separation," I told my friend Parviz, an Iranian immigrant not to go see the film as it will only make him feel embarrassed for his countrymen. While I found the subject matter of the film interesting enough, the peculiar behavior of the characters, between phoning mullahs to see if it was a sin to cleanse a dirty man, and slapping oneself because of the shame brought on by the wife's behavior, caused me to feel I was watching a travelogue film about some bizarre, primitive people, disconnected from the modern world, and far removed from any education or science. Some may want to raise Hoo-Ha's for such a film even being produced by an Iranian company, but I suspect the film maker knew part of the success of the film would be due to the rest of the world being given a glimpse of what life is really like in a culture that adheres to 7th century beliefs. It is unique; but is it really good?

Carlsbad Attorney Admits Taking Clients’ Funds for Personal Use
Good. Another scumbag lawyer is going to jail. I wonder how many never get caught. The funny thing is, the dirtbag was probably making good money on the books. Not enough, I guess. Never is enough for some of these people. Occupy.

Maryland Company Seeks to Privatize Oceanside Library
Oh, I can just see this. Library card? No longer required; Visa, MasterCard, and American Express only. Books loaned for 4 days only; then it will be $2.50 a day late charges. CD's? DVD's? No problem; $1.00 a day. Internet computers? Only $2.50 for 20 minutes. Newspapers? Magazines? 50 cents for back issues; current issue $1.00 - but you get it for 2 whole hours! Oh, restroom 25 cents. Yea, if any town would be so asinine, it would be Oceanside. It's only my opinion, but let's see if they prove me right.

Hiking Humphrey's Peak, Arizona
That's a nice piece of writing, Daniel. Well crafted descriptive sentences, and the imagery is superb. I could almost smell the pines. Keep your water fresh and your hiking boots dusty. I look forward to your next forty-seven.

University City Bikini Lady Reunited with Her Missing Dog
Oh, I think she will get picked up by a marketing firm that recognizes someone with a talent for getting attention on the product, and devising a way to get the public to work for you. You have to hand it to her--her method worked! She knew how to work it.

University City Bikini Lady Reunited with Her Missing Dog
I don't think the girl was trying to find her dog so much as she was using her missing dog to show off her body in hopes that fame would find her....and to a certain degree, it worked. She got her 15 minutes. I don't think we've seen all we will of the hottie and/or her warm, furry, pet.

Working the Alaska pipeline and Prudhoe Bay
Joaquin, The only thing unusual about Mr. Daugherty's path, is the way he stumbled down it, sucking up anything he could from anyone who had it. Back in those days, everyone was getting high or getting laid; more than likely, both. Many were trying to move to alternate lifestyles: living in churches, tree houses, yurts, teepees, former train stations and school houses and whatever else symbolized a rejection of Main Street. It was not unique; it was the norm. What made it particularly difficult was dealing with leeches like Mr. Daugherty, who didn't want to do anything to contribute; they just wanted to crash on your couch; eat your food; drink your beer; smoke your weed; try to bang your old lady; use your shower, your washing machine; and then borrow your car and a few bucks; then be on their way to do again at another "friend's" place. This guy was as common as dirt, but nowhere near as useful.

Warren; I think I see the first female President.— February 5, 2012 10:07 a.m.
Let’s Build an Even Bigger Jack in the Box in North Park
Why would that matter? If a rebuild voids the grandfather element, wouldn't that put Jack under current regulations?— February 1, 2012 11:12 a.m.
This Week in Movies: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Albert Nobbs, A Separation
Look, I would like to see things open up in Iran and all the artists there be free to show the world they too have rich imaginations, and are equally capable of presenting truly profound works, of a rich and complex beauty that only their culture can provide...but let's not lower the bar and claim certain films are extraordinary simply because they were made at all.— January 26, 2012 2:40 p.m.
This Week in Movies: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Albert Nobbs, A Separation
It is unique; but is it really good?— January 26, 2012 7:07 a.m.
Occupy.— January 26, 2012 6:22 a.m.
It's only my opinion, but let's see if they prove me right.— January 22, 2012 10:03 a.m.
Hiking Humphrey's Peak, Arizona
That's a nice piece of writing, Daniel. Well crafted descriptive sentences, and the imagery is superb. I could almost smell the pines. Keep your water fresh and your hiking boots dusty. I look forward to your next forty-seven.— January 20, 2012 11:27 p.m.
University City Bikini Lady Reunited with Her Missing Dog
Oh, I think she will get picked up by a marketing firm that recognizes someone with a talent for getting attention on the product, and devising a way to get the public to work for you. You have to hand it to her--her method worked! She knew how to work it.— December 5, 2011 5:27 p.m.
University City Bikini Lady Reunited with Her Missing Dog
I don't think the girl was trying to find her dog so much as she was using her missing dog to show off her body in hopes that fame would find her....and to a certain degree, it worked. She got her 15 minutes. I don't think we've seen all we will of the hottie and/or her warm, furry, pet.— December 3, 2011 7:46 p.m.
This guy was as common as dirt, but nowhere near as useful.— November 16, 2011 6:49 p.m.
