San Diego County Library Receives National Award

The San Diego Library deserves that award and a lot more. In spite of budget cuts, the library has managed to not only maintain it's place as a valuable community asset, but actually thrive and increase its offerings. I wish other organizations and companies utilized the internet as well as the library does. Using an internet connection, in the comfort of my home, I can search the entire library system, reserve a book, cd, videocassette, or dvd, and request it be delivered to a library branch convenient to me. Then, the library will send me an email to let me know when item is ready for me to pick up. I can then go on-line and get an extension if I need more time or drop the item off at any branch I happen to be near, again, at my convenience. And anyone who says the e-book is going to make all the paper books unnecessary, has obviously not developed the habit and appreciation of holding a good book in their hands, licking the tip of their finger as they turn to the next page, and eventually clapping the book shut after reading a great ending. It's just not the same with a glass screen. With a good book, you don't have to worry about batteries, or internet connections, or glare, or scratches, or upgrades, downloads, or formats. Every paper book has its unique cover, and appearance, and heft. With an e-reader, every book you get will be in that same device, each appearing exactly like the last, whether you are sitting in a coffee house sipping your favorite sip, or laid back in bed with the thing on your chest. But with a paper book, the page reflects that certain light, whether it's sunlight or a soft bed light; it changes with the circumstances. Not an e-reader--it's monotone. A paper book, maybe because of its familiarity, gives you surround sound. You move more easily into the fictive dream. So, quadruple kudos to the San Diego Public Library for doing a fantastic job and doing it better than anyone else!

Woman beaten on 4th and Washington

Hillcrest is one of the most colorful, interesting, culturally hip neighborhoods in San Diego....but it is also the biggest rolling freak show as well. Not sure what it is; probably the concentration of mental health facilities in the area, combined with the excessive alcohol intake of the resident population and the high drama that produces, and then there's the availability of street drugs which tend to go hand in hand with the high number of clubs. All that adds up to a very tempting set of circumstances for the mean nasties who come to prey on the vulnerable. There's no bout adout it; it can get pretty dicey, late at night, on the streets of Hillcrest.

The Big Noise: The Free Speech Fight of 1912, Part Two

Things are so different now, it is difficult to even comment on this story. By that I mean, there is none of the worker organization comparable to what existed back then, and the corporations and law enforcement are so tightly entwined, it seems almost impossible to object to any corporate policies without risking arrest or worse. There is virtually no prosecution of the police when they go completely berserk and beat demonstrators senseless or taze or pepper spray them. Heck--they don't even get prosecuted when they shoot civilians dead! Years ago, the police would have been held to task or there would have been riots in the streets. Today, nothing happens. No one seems to mind that their rights are slowly being eroded, and law enforcement acts as the corporate dogs. Workers are being squeezed into being minimum wage slaves and the masses get conned into believing it is all necessary in order to lower taxes. The dupes are even lead to believe that what is needed is to deprive public sector employees of their pensions when in fact those pensions pale in comparison to what has been taken by the CEO's and politicians. Everyone is now being trained to keep their heads down and their faces buried in their iphone so as to notice even less of what is being ripped off. And the masses go to the movies and the masters go to their mansions in the tropics. Yea, we've really come a long way. Where is Big Bill Hayward when you need him? Who is our Mother Jones of today? And Eugene Debs? Etc., etc.

Seattle Moviegoer Charged with Knocking Out Noisy Ten-Year-Old's Tooth

I realize it is just wrong to strike a child, but to be honest, I would have liked to see him beat the little peckerwood to death and then beat the mother to death with the kid's body. Spoiling others enjoyment of a movie is just so, so wrong. I say, under these circumstances a certain level of assault is justified and there should be no prosecution whatsoever. But that's just me

New Island Discovered in Little Italy!

What a great story. Your description of the food made my mouth water. I'll definitely have to try this place. What I found more intriguing though, was the story of the owner and his family. His mama taught him to cook; he came from Italy and opened his first restaurant in Tucson. He gets his wine from his brother who quit dentistry to run a vineyard, and I'm sure there are other family members involved. It's the classic immigrant success story. And we are the ones who are truly richer for it. Mama mia! What a great country, no? Pass the wine! Tear the bread! Can I get some more olive oil? Itsa sucha beautiful dinga.
