San Diego brown people and break dancing
You read the article and wonder if something is wrong with your comprehension. So, you read more of it and you realize that it's not you. So, like, you decide you can't keep reading it and stop. And then you wonder if The Reader is going for like...a different kind of reader.

UCSD’s graduation daze
Local talent is lacking? Excuse me? Hasn't the maintenance department and the theater department of the university handled the "flooring, stage, rigging," etc., for the last 40+ years? Why the need to contract out what has been done in-house for decades? And "Skilled and client-friendly operators for video and PowerPoint presentations"? What? No computer department anymore? Seems the university is following in the footsteps of the military, where every thing from cooking, laundry, transportation, etc., which used to be done in-house by the troops, is now contracted out to private companies---usually with close ties to those officers about to retire out and soon-to-be in need of some highly profitable employment. I know the military has money to burn and usually gets funded for more than they ask for, but I had no idea that UCSD had the same problem. Wonder who is greasing whose palms to get this scam rolling? And in the meantime the students are asked to pay ever higher tuition. Something really stinks in the ivory tower.

David Elliott's Final Column
Sorry to hear of your leaving, David. You certainly did bring an interesting point of view to the movies. I'm still working my way through the list of Iranian films you recommended awhile back. Truth is, I'm enjoying them. Thank you for putting me on to them. And thanks for bringing such a depth of knowledge to the subject, and letting the rest of us know that a film can be a multi-layered work of art, viewed and understood in a number of different ways. On the other hand, I'm glad to see you go because I'm so damn tired of reaching for my dictionary. I didn't always agree with what you said, but I did love the way you said it, even if at times it sounded like you had stepped through the looking glass and viewed the film from another dimension. I wasn't always sure what you were getting at; but it did leave me feeling I wanted to get to the theater and see that film. Like you, I think something is lost in the transition to digital; even more so if by losing the printed word, we lose reviewers like you. There is no doubt in my mind, the overall experience is diminished in a number of ways. In any case, I wish you the best of luck with whatever you do and wherever you go. I truly hope I will see your words somewhere else again sometime. Adios Amigo, happy trails to you.

No Road Yet to Tijuana's New Border Station
Well, we don't really know who screwed this up, do we? I don't understand why either side would proceed with construction if the other had not agreed to build what is needed to make the crossing viable. In other words, ba-duh?
— June 17, 2012 9:25 p.m.
No Road Yet to Tijuana's New Border Station
I cannot get over this. Talk about cross-border miscommunication. Did the Mexicans really build a border crossing with no discussion with the US concerning a connecting road? Or did the US agree and then re-neg on a deal to have a road linking the crossing to I-5? What would happen if the Mexican government decides to close the current crossing station at TJ and only allow visitors to come in thru the new facility? Could make for a real mess on the local streets on the US side, assuming there are any streets that actually connect to the new crossing. This is looking like a diplomatic disaster.

Fallbrook’s Shrinking Avocado
Pensions, schmensions! That still does not explain why SD pays more than 30 times more than neighboring counties. I doubt the Water District decided SD pays generous pensions to their police and other public employees, so they increased the charge for water by 30 times. You think if we reduce or even cut pensions, the price of water will drop? I doubt it. I think the solution is to drink less water.....and more tequila! Viva Sandy Eggo!!!
— June 15, 2012 11:29 p.m.
Fallbrook’s Shrinking Avocado
Now, Nan, pension rates are not the fault of everything, but you are right about our avocados making the best guac. Of course, that is largely a consequence of the shots of tequila you must imbibe to make the guacamole properly. Ole' Baby!
— June 15, 2012 9:33 a.m.
Fallbrook’s Shrinking Avocado
I think the first question that needs to be answered is why are San Diego County farms paying 30 times more than neighboring counties for their water? The water district is the one who should be asked why they are extorting local farmers. Unless that issue gets resolved, I don't see much of a future for the "diminutive" California avocado. And when that term starts getting around, the future looks even bleaker. The same thing is happening here in the City of SD with property owners getting screwed royally by the Metropolitan Water District. Apartment owners are so fed up with constantly increasing water bills, they are now passing the charges onto their tenants. It's no secret that water has historically been dealt like heroin to Southern California municipalities, but what I'd like to know is why is San Diego viewed as the fattest pig to poke?

Pedal, pedal, pedal the boat
Barbarella, I really think David should get some kind of award for putting up with you and your zany ideas. Reading about the ups and downs of your lives brings to mind some kind of contemporary version of "I Love Lucy." In any case, I would like to recommend, if you do want to spend a nice day on a lake in a boat without working up a sweat, that you go east and then south not north, to Lake Morena. You can rent a nifty motor boat inexpensively and you don't need to know anything more than how to pull the cord and push right to go left. The lake is large enough to keep you entertained for at least half a day, and you can land on certain shorelines and visit old Indian village sites. If you want to go large, you can pop for fishing licenses and really have some fun. Freshwater sushi, anyone? Lastly, since I can see you guys are trying to find fun things to do that don't lead to alcoholism, I'd like to recommend you try riding Segways. I guarantee you will love it. There are two outfits in town and I've tried both and would recommend either one--they are both great, with fun staff, thrilling tours and will not cost an arm and a leg. You might even snag a Groupon coupon and save a few buck to put toward your fishing licenses. Enjoy. Babalooo!

Amsterdam’s True(r) Colors
But what about the hash houses? You mean to tell me you didn't stop in for a little...er...a cuppa...a bowl of....a nicely rolled dove-tail? Not even a sip? You missed the best part!

San Diego brown people and break dancing
You read the article and wonder if something is wrong with your comprehension. So, you read more of it and you realize that it's not you. So, like, you decide you can't keep reading it and stop. And then you wonder if The Reader is going for like...a different kind of reader.— June 21, 2012 11:16 p.m.
Something really stinks in the ivory tower.— June 20, 2012 3:05 p.m.
Adios Amigo, happy trails to you.— June 17, 2012 10:50 p.m.
No Road Yet to Tijuana's New Border Station
Well, we don't really know who screwed this up, do we? I don't understand why either side would proceed with construction if the other had not agreed to build what is needed to make the crossing viable. In other words, ba-duh?— June 17, 2012 9:25 p.m.
This is looking like a diplomatic disaster.— June 17, 2012 10:28 a.m.
Viva Sandy Eggo!!!— June 15, 2012 11:29 p.m.
Fallbrook’s Shrinking Avocado
Now, Nan, pension rates are not the fault of everything, but you are right about our avocados making the best guac. Of course, that is largely a consequence of the shots of tequila you must imbibe to make the guacamole properly. Ole' Baby!— June 15, 2012 9:33 a.m.
It's no secret that water has historically been dealt like heroin to Southern California municipalities, but what I'd like to know is why is San Diego viewed as the fattest pig to poke?— June 14, 2012 11:09 p.m.
Enjoy. Babalooo!— June 14, 2012 9:24 a.m.
Amsterdam’s True(r) Colors
But what about the hash houses? You mean to tell me you didn't stop in for a little...er...a cuppa...a bowl of....a nicely rolled dove-tail? Not even a sip? You missed the best part!— June 12, 2012 8:50 p.m.
