A Return to Cuba

"I did not enjoy what the Cubans’ poverty could offer me as a foreigner." For me, this line says it all. It can actually be applied to most 3rd world countries. I could not help but think of our neighbor, poor Mexico. Beautiful people there too, and a beautiful country too...if it weren't for the odors, the sickness, the risky water, and the dangers they all represent. There has never been anything beautiful about poverty, other than the people who rise above it. Great writing, Ms. Mondejar. One of the best travel pieces I've seen in a long time.

Tijuana Wastewater Cleaner Than San Diego’s

You probably are just another a-nit Mexican racist, but not for saying the US picked up the tab on this one. Based on what I could find (Google South Bay Intn'l Treatment Plant) it looks like Uncle Sam did cover the cost, but Mexico is involved throughout although not clear on whether that includes expenses. But the US also got the most benefit from this plant too in terms of jobs, clean water, etc. As for that racist thing...if you are referring to my comment in response to the article about the smell coming from the fish market in TJ, I was referring to the writer, not you.

Ocean Beach Entrance Sign Under Attack!

That is very nice of you, Gail, to offer to organize a fund-raiser. I'm not sure any OB organizers read these pages. You might want to send a note to one of the Town Council folks. I think they would be foolish not to take you up on your offer. Seriously, I think a mosaic of something like the OB pier, and/or Dog Beach, would be a great gateway sign for the town.

Tijuana’s Fish Markets Don’t Smell So Swell

And the fact that the fish market in TJ smells is considered newsworthy because.....? What I smell is racism. Now that really stinks. TB, (and The Reader) this is the best you could find to report on concerning TJ and Mexico in general? You want to write about places with foul odors? How about the public restrooms throughout San Diego? Now there is a wretched stench if there ever was one. Why don't you write about that? Why the acidic comments? Because I just don't like people who take cheap shots at cities and/or countries that are doing the best they can with what they have.

Construction Update: San Ysidro Border Station

I find this a bit baffling; Google El Chaparral border station and you get a link to a diagram of the construction site. The whole thing is pretty much being built "north" of the international border, even though it is referred to as the Mexican station. Also, a large part of the plan is to redirect traffic on 5 South west to the new crossing. I haven't heard a peep of any construction planned for I-5. Anyone?

The Racial Memory of John Valadez

Twister, I wouldn't take it so literally and I wouldn't get into it so deep. The critic is just saying that this artist, John Valdez, draws on the "Zoot Suit" scene that existed back when in LA. The term "racial memory" probably could have been "cultural memory," but you know how it is with artists and art critics: you never know for sure wtf they are talking about. Plus, it's "art," so whose to say what is right or wrong?
