Top-secret sky spies
The boys want new toys, but periscopes and pinhole cameras sounds like somebody got the Sheriff's shopping list mixed up with a 9-year old's letter to Santa. Besides, what are they planning to do with items like those--go underwater on Mission Bay and quietly snap shots of the sun-bathing beauties on the yachts? This town is becoming more like Mayberry every day.

Smashed in the face
Good for Judge Reinhardt. It's about time someone let these cops know they cannot just blow their stack and go after people, whether it's right, wrong, or lawful. These incidents are nothing but temper tantrums in uniform and the police need to check themselves and stop acting like raging bulls.

Foie Gras... or Faux Pas?
I'm sorry; I just can't get right with this. I think it's great that this duck farm treats the ducks so well and lets's them roam for most of their lives, but sticking a tube down their throat and force feeding them three times a day is just wrong! It's so far from natural, the only thing I can equate it with is torture. Painless, but torture nonetheless. I did watch the video and heard the veterinarian explain how ducks have different throats than us, and how they breathe through their tongue, so there is no gag reflex when the long tube is inserted down their throat, but this is not how ducks are supposed to obtain their food. That's the biggest issue I have with it: ducks are not meant to have food dumped down their throat three times a day, every day. I understand foie gras is delicious, but still; and I know other animals are fattened up for the kill, but not like this. They are fed well, but allowed to eat normally. When they've had enough, they stop eating. Force feeding ducks seems cruel and crazy. I mean, how good can something be to justify doing something as crazy as this?

Hey, Surfpup, I'm sure you could get arrested if you put your mind to it. Seems to me there are some business owners who are just asking for a lawsuit. Don't they give these people any training in "public relations"?

Midway shopping center’s spiky trees with soft name
Thanks for the correction, Tom. Could have fooled me. That giant in Hawaii reminds me of the huge ficus trees near the foot bridge in Balboa Park.

Midway shopping center’s spiky trees with soft name
Also known as a Kapok tree. This stuff that was once used in life preservers. You can also see one of these trees along the back side of Spanish Village (actually the East side) along the sidewalk that goes from the Carousel to the Village. Not a tree you would want to climb because of the huge thorns. And yes, the pods are really weird.

Oceanside Code Enforcement Fines Homeowner
$100,000 in legal fees? I would think even if the place is a dump, it still would not be that far out of compliance with code. I mean, how old is this place anyway? If he is the one who hassled the cop outside the bagel joint, it could come back to haunt him and they may bust his chops with some compliance issues, but I still don't see how it could get that expensive or complicated. Unless this guy Amster is a total looney tune, in which case this thing was doomed from the start, then I still think he ought to be allowed to do what he needs to in order to assess the true condition of the property.

Escondido Hashes Out Food Truck Issues
I think Escondido may miss the boat on this one. These food trucks are the best thing that has happened to street food in ages. Not only do they offer interest and variety to the neighborhood, they give people a chance to taste some good food they might not otherwise. In fact, some of these food trucks are offering excellent, high-end cuisine that one would not get a taste of without going the whole nine yards, putting on a clean shirt and going through the Maitre D', which means a much bigger bite out of your wallet. I say roll on!

I see nothing interesting about this sign. Just like I find nothing interesting about mental illness (Obama murdering Americans?). Just because someone exercises their constitutional right to free speech, doesn't mean they're not nuts.

Good for Judge Reinhardt. It's about time someone let these cops know they cannot just blow their stack and go after people, whether it's right, wrong, or lawful. Foie Gras... or Faux Pas?
I'm sorry; I just can't get right with this. I think it's great that this duck farm treats the ducks so well and lets's them roam for most of their lives, but sticking a tube down their throat and force feeding them three times a day is just wrong! It's so far from natural, the only thing I can equate it with is torture. Painless, but torture nonetheless. I did watch the video and heard the veterinarian explain how ducks have different throats than us, and how they breathe through their tongue, so there is no gag reflex when the long tube is inserted down their throat, but this is not how ducks are supposed to obtain their food. That's the biggest issue I have with it: ducks are not meant to have food dumped down their throat three times a day, every day. I understand foie gras is delicious, but still; and I know other animals are fattened up for the kill, but not like this. They are fed well, but allowed to eat normally. When they've had enough, they stop eating. Force feeding ducks seems cruel and crazy. I mean, how good can something be to justify doing something as crazy as this?— December 3, 2012 9:13 p.m.

Also known as a Kapok tree. This stuff that was once used in life preservers. You can also see one of these trees along the back side of Spanish Village (actually the East side) along the sidewalk that goes from the Carousel to the Village. Not a tree you would want to climb because of the huge thorns. And yes, the pods are really weird.— December 1, 2012 11:14 p.m.
Oceanside Code Enforcement Fines Homeowner
$100,000 in legal fees? I would think even if the place is a dump, it still would not be that far out of compliance with code. I mean, how old is this place anyway? If he is the one who hassled the cop outside the bagel joint, it could come back to haunt him and they may bust his chops with some compliance issues, but I still don't see how it could get that expensive or complicated. Unless this guy Amster is a total looney tune, in which case this thing was doomed from the start, then I still think he ought to be allowed to do what he needs to in order to assess the true condition of the property.— December 1, 2012 10 p.m.
Escondido Hashes Out Food Truck Issues
I think Escondido may miss the boat on this one. These food trucks are the best thing that has happened to street food in ages. Not only do they offer interest and variety to the neighborhood, they give people a chance to taste some good food they might not otherwise. In fact, some of these food trucks are offering excellent, high-end cuisine that one would not get a taste of without going the whole nine yards, putting on a clean shirt and going through the Maitre D', which means a much bigger bite out of your wallet.
