100-pound turtle saved from San Felipe fish market
A Mexican one, evidently. But who knows where those guys were planning to take that thing. It wasn't that long ago that turtle was considered a real delicacy. I believe the old sailing ships preferred to have a few on board if they could. They were known to stay alive a long time and so the meat was fresh when they were eventually slaughtered. It does seem cruel now, but back in the old days, turtles were just another form of seafood and a great source of the "tortoise shell" that was used to make combs and buttons and buckles and all sorts of stuff.

MTS banks payment on right-of-way lease to desert railway
You're not the only one, Visduh. I've always felt that San Diego is getting short-changed by not having an East-West rail line. I realize this one, should it come to pass, would not go all the way to Yuma, but it's a start. I don't know why the idea was abandoned just because of a 100-yr flood that washed out the tracks. Some said it may have been sabotage. I wonder if this will put the old trestle in the Goat Canyon section of the Carrizo Gorge back in service? That would be fantastic. And hopefully, the tourist train that runs out of Campo might be able to link in and really offer riders a great trip. I do recall reading somewhere that a big concern is the original rail line goes in and out of Mexico and offers too much opportunity for illegal border crossing and druggistas. That is going to be a big stumbling block, but if a way can be found to resolve it, this could benefit all concerned. Nice catch, Visduh.

Discarded fishing line injures Lake Murray’s baby osprey
I have seen far too many cases of "fishing line injury or death." Why can't these dumbbell fisherman take their line to a trash can? Some of the sites are supplying special containers for just such a purpose. I once freed a Great Blue Heron that had become trapped by fishing line in a tree, and another time a ducking that had a fishing hook caught in his foot and the attached line caught in a branch in the water. It's really a shame and totally preventable if the fisherman would just wake the hell up.

I hear that, Dave; I'm surprised they are bothering with a cockfight. Not much money involved, so it must have been the gun, and then once they saw the roosters they had to bust it.

I'd like to know what the person ranting about what is sex and what is gender is talking about. When you're having sex, you're male, unless you're having sex and you're female, but in neither case is sex your gender. Your gender, whatever that may be, is grammatical. Say what? So, if you're copulating, grammaticating, or genderizing, you are probably not doing what you think you are doing and consequently, according to this person, you're not having sex! Huh?

It wasn't that long ago that Congress wanted to give the military more than they had requested in their budget. And yet, we can't afford health care, have to cut Social Security, and eliminate programs for school kids. Unreal.

It's amazing how people can live a good portion of their lives together and never really know who they each are or what they are about. Kudos to you for pointing it out, Ms. Mitchell. But what I want to really thank you for is for pointing out what a bunch of bs the military scene is. I was in too and I could not believe what a waste of time, space, and man (or woman) hours the whole thing was. I mean, yea, rah-rah for the brave soldiers who get to be soldiers, but the vast majority of the 'cruits' and lifers I met was the biggest bunch of screw-offs I had ever encountered. And you are absolutely right about the benefits - the best there is -- free, total health care for you and everyone in your family - exactly what people in this country have been trying to get for years but are told it's not possible; unaffordable, and not practical. Military also gets extra monetary allowances for everything and anything you might have to...God forbid --pay for! And discounts and freebies everywhere you go. It is my opinion that the primary reason young working class women in this country are going into the military like never before is because it is the best paying job they will ever have...and they know it. What other job gives you 30 days vacation after one year? Or, is it six months? As you noted, you get raises for moving up, staying still, or turning left or right correctly. It is the biggest and best give away program in the world. Granted, there is the chance you could get sent overseas and get maimed or killed in a war that no one can explain anymore. As disgraceful as that is, the ladies are willing to take their chances to ride on this benefits-loaded bandwagon. Thank you very much for telling it like it is...and then some. Oh, and as for those rosary beads? I think your old man did it just to piss off your mom. Just like my ex-wife went Re-born just to piss me off.

The tallest tree in SD
They may not be the biggest, but anyone who wants to see "knock your socks off" trees should take a stroll on the pedestrian bridge that runs over Palm Canyon in Balboa Park. This is the wood bridge that connects the small parking lot behind the Alcazar Garden with the sidewalk across from the Spreckles Organ Pavilion, It's the bridge that offers a long series of wooden steps down into the canyon. I'm pretty sure those giants are ficus (fig) trees and cousins of the Morton Bay Fig. While the trees themselves are impressive, it is their roots that amaze. You can climb down there and disappear between the folds of the root system.

Well, they look like they are in school uniforms. Is that the hooker's schtick? To look like little baby-chick high school girls? If so, I must say, they are doing a very good job at it. I vote they graduate with honors.

100-pound turtle saved from San Felipe fish market
A Mexican one, evidently. But who knows where those guys were planning to take that thing. It wasn't that long ago that turtle was considered a real delicacy. I believe the old sailing ships preferred to have a few on board if they could. They were known to stay alive a long time and so the meat was fresh when they were eventually slaughtered. It does seem cruel now, but back in the old days, turtles were just another form of seafood and a great source of the "tortoise shell" that was used to make combs and buttons and buckles and all sorts of stuff.— June 26, 2013 10:49 p.m.
MTS banks payment on right-of-way lease to desert railway
You're not the only one, Visduh. I've always felt that San Diego is getting short-changed by not having an East-West rail line. I realize this one, should it come to pass, would not go all the way to Yuma, but it's a start. I don't know why the idea was abandoned just because of a 100-yr flood that washed out the tracks. Some said it may have been sabotage. I wonder if this will put the old trestle in the Goat Canyon section of the Carrizo Gorge back in service? That would be fantastic. And hopefully, the tourist train that runs out of Campo might be able to link in and really offer riders a great trip. I do recall reading somewhere that a big concern is the original rail line goes in and out of Mexico and offers too much opportunity for illegal border crossing and druggistas. That is going to be a big stumbling block, but if a way can be found to resolve it, this could benefit all concerned. Nice catch, Visduh.— June 24, 2013 8:24 p.m.
Discarded fishing line injures Lake Murray’s baby osprey
I have seen far too many cases of "fishing line injury or death." Why can't these dumbbell fisherman take their line to a trash can? Some of the sites are supplying special containers for just such a purpose. I once freed a Great Blue Heron that had become trapped by fishing line in a tree, and another time a ducking that had a fishing hook caught in his foot and the attached line caught in a branch in the water. It's really a shame and totally preventable if the fisherman would just wake the hell up.— June 24, 2013 5:32 p.m.

I'd like to know what the person ranting about what is sex and what is gender is talking about. When you're having sex, you're male, unless you're having sex and you're female, but in neither case is sex your gender. Your gender, whatever that may be, is grammatical. Say what? So, if you're copulating, grammaticating, or genderizing, you are probably not doing what you think you are doing and consequently, according to this person, you're not having sex! It's amazing how people can live a good portion of their lives together and never really know who they each are or what they are about. Kudos to you for pointing it out, Ms. Mitchell. But what I want to really thank you for is for pointing out what a bunch of bs the military scene is. I was in too and I could not believe what a waste of time, space, and man (or woman) hours the whole thing was. I mean, yea, rah-rah for the brave soldiers who get to be soldiers, but the vast majority of the 'cruits' and lifers I met was the biggest bunch of screw-offs I had ever encountered. And you are absolutely right about the benefits - the best there is -- free, total health care for you and everyone in your family - exactly what people in this country have been trying to get for years but are told it's not possible; unaffordable, and not practical. Military also gets extra monetary allowances for everything and anything you might have to...God forbid --pay for! And discounts and freebies everywhere you go. It is my opinion that the primary reason young working class women in this country are going into the military like never before is because it is the best paying job they will ever have...and they know it. What other job gives you 30 days vacation after one year? Or, is it six months? As you noted, you get raises for moving up, staying still, or turning left or right correctly. It is the biggest and best give away program in the world. Granted, there is the chance you could get sent overseas and get maimed or killed in a war that no one can explain anymore. As disgraceful as that is, the ladies are willing to take their chances to ride on this benefits-loaded bandwagon. Thank you very much for telling it like it is...and then some. Oh, and as for those rosary beads? I think your old man did it just to piss off your mom. Just like my ex-wife went Re-born just to piss me off.— June 19, 2013 11:58 p.m.
The tallest tree in SD
They may not be the biggest, but anyone who wants to see "knock your socks off" trees should take a stroll on the pedestrian bridge that runs over Palm Canyon in Balboa Park. This is the wood bridge that connects the small parking lot behind the Alcazar Garden with the sidewalk across from the Spreckles Organ Pavilion, It's the bridge that offers a long series of wooden steps down into the canyon. I'm pretty sure those giants are ficus (fig) trees and cousins of the Morton Bay Fig. While the trees themselves are impressive, it is their roots that amaze. You can climb down there and disappear between the folds of the root system.— June 19, 2013 7:39 p.m.
