Goodwill hunting for donations at new Hillcrest store
I think it's way more than recycling things. These thrift stores are making more money than ever. Have you checked their prices lately? Retreads on University Ave prices certain used furniture at several hundred dollars apiece. So does Baras, also on University Ave. and the Veterans' store down at the foot of Washington Ave. I've asked the staff why the prices are so high and get the reply, "Do you know what that would sell for in a regular store?" I always reply, "Yea, but what did you pay for it?" What other business do you know of that gets its merchandise for free? And what business gets to sell electronic merchandise with no guarantee and no return policy? I think someone ought to be checking up on some of these businesses. If they are going to operate as non-profits, than they should not be selling merchandise at retail prices. They qualify for the non-tax status because they claim they are providing a social good. If you can get it at the same price or less at Target, where's the social good?

Artist seeks to use freeway billboard as canvas for Point Loma lighthouse painting
This is a great idea! What a pleasant change of pace it would be to see some art on a billboard instead of the usual commercial smutterings. The Point Loma lighthouse is as much an icon of San Diego as the Balboa Park Tower. I would suggest you ask the billboard company to kick in a bit too and perhaps make some adjustment on the price. It could turn out to be an excellent business decision as this idea spreads.

Vista teen ordered to pay $105,703 for her admitted acts of vandalism
Jnojr, my point was she will never pay the penalty because she won't live long enough. Hey--don't get me wrong-- I would have no problem with snipping off the tip of her spray paint finger. I hate that eye pollution. But why not give her a penalty that is both doable and really drives the point home, like...working on a graffiti abatement program every weekend, cleaning up other taggers smutterings for, say...5 years? That would be getting more than $50 a month out of her hide and cleaning things up at the same time. As other taggers get busted and get the same penalty, we end up having a self-serve clean-up army: taggers cleaning up after taggers. A very zen solution if I may say so myself.

I find it interesting to note we import dogs from Belgium, a country where marijuana is legal, and train them to help bust people for possession. Instead of importing the dogs, we ought to be importing the laws.

Let's see...$105,703.00...@ $50 a month...that works out to be 2,114 payments...and at 12 payments a year, it will only take her 176 years to pay this off. Hmm...either somebody thinks taggers are prone to extraordinary longevity, or the judge inhaled some spray paint before passing this sentence.

Veteran sues County, Coronado after children were wrongfully taken because of medical marijuana use
This is what happens when those in positions of authority decide to force their own particular beliefs on others, instead of enforcing the law. All of the officials involved in this story know weed is legal in CA, and they knew the guy had paperwork that legitimized his use. What happened to this family is inexcusable. This is just like those religious crackpots that show up everywhere with their signs and their literature; they just want to force everyone else to accept their beliefs and they will either hound you to death until you do, or, if they find they have law enforcement officials who happen to share their views, they will use them to accomplish the same thing. They are opposed to marijuana use but not above using the authorities to deny others free choice under the law. Typical gestapo tactics, and law enforcement, like the rabid dogs they are, are more than happy to assist. I hope this guy sues these creeps for everything they've got--and wins.

Honoring the fallen at Ypres
1914, and we still haven't learned; despite the hundreds of thousands dead. War after war after war. Not the dead fathers, the dead brothers, sons, daughters, mothers, sisters, children, are enough. It still goes on. Driven by hate, by fear, by greed, by ignorance mostly. We continue to make war...and fail to understand, when it is yours laying dead on the field..there is no reason in the world that makes it worthwhile. It's so wrong; so bad; so not what humans should do to one another.

Former bank employee denies grand theft charge
I do wonder. I wonder how this guy, who supposedly had the grey matter to work at the bank in the first place, did not think this jig would be discovered licketty split! Was he counting on the old lady to croak? And then what? No accounting in the course of closing the account? It never fails to amaze me how dumb some supposedly smart people can be.

Goodwill hunting for donations at new Hillcrest store
I think it's way more than recycling things. These thrift stores are making more money than ever. Have you checked their prices lately? Retreads on University Ave prices certain used furniture at several hundred dollars apiece. So does Baras, also on University Ave. and the Veterans' store down at the foot of Washington Ave. I've asked the staff why the prices are so high and get the reply, "Do you know what that would sell for in a regular store?" I always reply, "Yea, but what did you pay for it?" What other business do you know of that gets its merchandise for free? And what business gets to sell electronic merchandise with no guarantee and no return policy? I think someone ought to be checking up on some of these businesses. If they are going to operate as non-profits, than they should not be selling merchandise at retail prices. They qualify for the non-tax status because they claim they are providing a social good. If you can get it at the same price or less at Target, where's the social good?— August 19, 2013 6:20 p.m.
Artist seeks to use freeway billboard as canvas for Point Loma lighthouse painting
This is a great idea! What a pleasant change of pace it would be to see some art on a billboard instead of the usual commercial smutterings. The Point Loma lighthouse is as much an icon of San Diego as the Balboa Park Tower. I would suggest you ask the billboard company to kick in a bit too and perhaps make some adjustment on the price. It could turn out to be an excellent business decision as this idea spreads.— August 19, 2013 10:38 a.m.
Vista teen ordered to pay $105,703 for her admitted acts of vandalism
Jnojr, my point was she will never pay the penalty because she won't live long enough. Hey--don't get me wrong-- I would have no problem with snipping off the tip of her spray paint finger. I hate that eye pollution. But why not give her a penalty that is both doable and really drives the point home, like...working on a graffiti abatement program every weekend, cleaning up other taggers smutterings for, say...5 years? That would be getting more than $50 a month out of her hide and cleaning things up at the same time. As other taggers get busted and get the same penalty, we end up having a self-serve clean-up army: taggers cleaning up after taggers. I find it interesting to note we import dogs from Belgium, a country where marijuana is legal, and train them to help bust people for possession. Instead of importing the dogs, we ought to be importing the laws.— August 16, 2013 8:46 a.m.

Let's see...$105,703.00...@ $50 a month...that works out to be 2,114 payments...and at 12 payments a year, it will only take her 176 years to pay this off. Hmm...either somebody thinks taggers are prone to extraordinary longevity, or the judge inhaled some spray paint before passing this sentence.— August 15, 2013 11:02 p.m.

Veteran sues County, Coronado after children were wrongfully taken because of medical marijuana use
This is what happens when those in positions of authority decide to force their own particular beliefs on others, instead of enforcing the law. All of the officials involved in this story know weed is legal in CA, and they knew the guy had paperwork that legitimized his use. What happened to this family is inexcusable. This is just like those religious crackpots that show up everywhere with their signs and their literature; they just want to force everyone else to accept their beliefs and they will either hound you to death until you do, or, if they find they have law enforcement officials who happen to share their views, they will use them to accomplish the same thing. They are opposed to marijuana use but not above using the authorities to deny others free choice under the law. Typical gestapo tactics, and law enforcement, like the rabid dogs they are, are more than happy to assist. I hope this guy sues these creeps for everything they've got--and wins.— August 14, 2013 10:12 a.m.

Former bank employee denies grand theft charge
I do wonder. I wonder how this guy, who supposedly had the grey matter to work at the bank in the first place, did not think this jig would be discovered licketty split! Was he counting on the old lady to croak? And then what? No accounting in the course of closing the account?
