Because we're a healthy lot

Be that as it may, Don, I am still surprised to read Healthcare employment in SD is so low when compared to other major cities. I wonder if this is due to a large segment of healthcare going to active military and veterans and consequently not being counted? I would think with Scripps Institute, UCSD Hospital, Scripps Mercy Hospital, and tons of clinical trial research clinics in San Diego, employment in this sector would be much larger.

I seriously doubt anyone spending even $5 on some edibles is going to toss it into some little ghosts' bag. This is just more crap designed to ratchet up the fear factor and cause people to feel more law enforcement is required; perhaps a little military intervention. What really surprises me is that The Reader contributes to this nonsense.

Be that as it may, the question remains, how can we use our representative democracy to effect change and restrict or eliminate the influence of unrestricted and unregulated capitalism and bring about a more equitable society? Especially when we live in a culture where power is in the hands of those who control the medium through which that change is to take place?

Long way from Chesapeake Bay

Don, I'm certainly no expert when it comes to fish or health laws, but "adulterated" is not a term I would use to describe food stuff held in unsanitary conditions. Adulterated to me, means something has been added or the food has been altered in some way. Sounds odd to me.

Borrego: build a home, lose a farm

The problem those developments in Borrego Springs face is after the golf, after the scotch and sirloin, and after mama is finished baking out by the pool, the copacetic couple wants to take a ride into town, and once they do that, they realize they've made a dreadful mistake. You rarely hear golf and mountain sheep in the same sentence and unless they are outdoorsy-type Republicans, an extremely rare breed, they are not going to be satisfied with a tour of the Visitor's Center at Palm Canyon and a little eye-to-eye with an actual ram. They quickly discover It takes less than two hours to tour the whole town, and that includes a visit to the antique shop and a stop at the coffee house/ice cream parlor. Once the "resortists" leave the resort they will soon discover in Borrego Springs, there is just no there, there... and they've got five more days to go. The lack of water is the least of the problems right now. The best thing that could happen to Brego, is that it gets adopted by an Indian tribe and they build a mega casino.

Excessive force in his history

People need to understand that things are different now. The police, border patrol, just about any uniformed services, are permitted to kill citizens if they deem it appropriate. I believe the policy is to try and make it a good clean kill--especially when shooting women or children. There is no accountability and there will be no prosecution if the person in uniform can explain why they felt their life was in danger and they had to shoot the unarmed civilian. It's the new America; corporations are people and the police are executioners. No wonder the rest of the world hates us.
