Pro golfer problems
I agree with danfogel. The basic issue is that for there to be an betting advantage to one player tanking then there has to be a betting mechanism to bet on the player or team losing. Because there are so many entrants in a golf tournament the odds of any one player winning are almost always small. So in golf for the most part you can't bet on a player to lose you can only bet on a player to win. Maybe there are some obscure bets available - how many strokes such and such player has, etc but I would think those are fairly unusual bets. In contrast, for head-to-head team sports like football games, baseball games, etc one team wins and another team loses so the bettor can in effect bet on one team to lose. Mistakes - turnovers, errors - can have a big impact on a game's result for sports like baseball, football, and basketball. So even a non-star player can have a big negative influence on the outcome of the game.— July 1, 2015 2:32 a.m.
Padres' good young blood gone
I think Brian Bosworth was the guy from Oklahoma. He was a very good college player but in the NFL turned out to be all hype and image (cool mohawk haircut and sunglasses).— June 27, 2015 9:26 a.m.
Padres' good young blood gone
I seem to remember a certain weekly newspaper printing comments from a naysayer named Bruce Henderson pointing out that the Chargers weren't actually locked in until 2020. At the time those comments were either mocked or ignored.— June 26, 2015 9:26 p.m.
Padres' good young blood gone
I actually think the Matt Bush pick slightly eclipses the Ryan Leaf pick as the worst draft pick ever for SD professional sports team. A good case can be made that both the worst MLB draft pick ever and the worst NFL draft pick ever have been made by SD teams.— June 26, 2015 9:22 p.m.
Padres' good young blood gone
I'll at least give the 2015 Padres credit for spending some money and trying to be competitive. This is about 15 years after Prop C was passed in part due to the implication that having a new stadium would allow ownership to spend enough for a competitive team. Since then for the most part the Padres have had a low payroll and haven't had much success - the Padres haven't won a single playoff series since 1998. Notably in 2004 the Padres with the #1 draft pick passed on ace pitcher Justin Verlander (who has since won the Cy Young and MVP) because his agent would have demanded a big contract and instead they picked Matt Bush who has not had much success on or off the field.— June 26, 2015 7:02 p.m.
Boltman tackles Fabiani and Spanos
The New Orleans Saints were a bribe from the NFL to crooked Louisiana politicians who helped push through the NFL's absurd antitrust exemption.— June 22, 2015 8:39 p.m.
But what are we manufacturing?
I think it is hard to get a truly representative sample but it sounds like BLS (I assume that's who commissions the U1-U6 surveys) at least tries to get an accurate sample. But there must be tremendous political pressure to inflate the numbers - hopefully the system is in place to assure objective data collection. I think back to a couple of weeks ago when Neilson sent my a few dollars in an envelope along with a complicated TV watching diary to fill out. I must confess that I figured it just wasn't worth my time and I just kept the few dollars.— June 21, 2015 8:15 p.m.
But what are we manufacturing?
I think the Pope is doing an admirable job at trying his best to live up to what the good book teaches. He has eschewed the fancy clothes, housing, and transportation that his position certainly would provide for him. And he is at least trying to clean up some of the sex abuse problems and the money laundering at the Vatican banking system.— June 21, 2015 8:08 p.m.
In San Diego versus Chargers, is next move up to Beutner?
You think our priorities are a bit out of order? Like maybe we should fix potholes before we build a new stadium?— June 20, 2015 10:31 a.m.
But what are we manufacturing?
We do manufacture ships (NASSCO) and chips (QCOM - or at least the design of the chips) in San Diego. I think those 2 are the biggest economic contributors that manufacture something and provide a lot of middle class jobs.— June 20, 2015 10:15 a.m.
