Fate of Chargers predicted
Supposedly Goodell has said the NFL only wants 2 total teams in Southern CA - whether that is 1 team in SD and 1 in LA or 2 in LA. But supposedly the NFL doesn't want 2 teams in LA + 1 team in SD. I couldn't find a print reference but the Loose Cannons on XTRA 1360 AM have repeated the above comment often.— July 13, 2015 10:47 a.m.
Fate of Chargers predicted
The Chargers have made it very clear that moving to LA is their first choice. It's up to the NFL now as to which teams get to move to L.A. There is little point now in the city / county of SD negotiating with the Chargers or spending more money on studies, environmental impact reports (EIR's), etc. If the Chargers are allowed to move to LA they are gone. If the Chargers are NOT allowed to move to LA then the city / county's negotiating position all of a sudden becomes a lot stronger and we shouldn't have to give so much away to the Chargers. The original proposed ~500M taxpayer funds / land to be used should be scaled way back if the Chargers get "stuck" in SD.— July 13, 2015 10:44 a.m.
Fate of Chargers predicted
I think an example is how shocked all the Chargers fans were that the Chargers would potentially do business together with the Raiders. From the fans perspective the Raiders are the enemy and should never, ever be the Chargers partners. But from a business perspective the Chargers ownership will make any partnerships that might be in their best interest from a business perspective. The fans see the rivalry as Chargers vs. Raiders and the goal is winning football games. But from the owners' perspective the rivalry is a small number of wealthy owners vs. a large number of taxpayers and fans, and the goal is for the owners to amass as much wealth as possible.— July 13, 2015 10:36 a.m.
Hysteria won't build a stadium
Let me look at this from the mindset of "well the NFL is really screwing cities but I really want my NFL team". I don't really agree with that mindset but at least I think it's honest and not totally unreasonable. So from that mindset one would say "try to keep the Chargers but try not to get screwed TOO badly" I think at this point the city should back off from the offer that was made by the task force. That offer was frankly pretty generous from the city / county - probably about as generous as they could get without insisting on a tax increase and 2/3 vote (which would be impossible to pass). At this point the Chargers have made their intentions clear - they want to move to L.A. IF they get shut out of L.A. by the owners' decisions and/or progress on Carson / Inglewood / who knows what other stadiums up there, THEN the Chargers' negotiating position with SD suddenly gets a lot weaker and the city / county should show no mercy to the Chargers at that point. There isn't much point for the city to be generous to the Chargers at this point. Either they get to move to LA or they're stuck in San Diego (at least for a while)— July 11, 2015 12:31 p.m.
Hysteria won't build a stadium
Personally, if I have to point the finger at one place for all of this I point it at 2 politicians, Hale Boggs and Russell Long, from Louisiana who pushed through the NFL's ridiculous anti-trust exemption in 1966 in exchange for the NFL putting the Saints in New Orleans, As legend has it the quid-pro-quo went something like this, " Mills agreed. But before proceeding, Boggs wanted to make sure Louisiana and the NFL understood each other. He met Rozelle just off the House floor. As Boggs later related it to Hymel, he told Rozelle that things were looking good. "Great, Hale, that's great." "Just for the record, Pete, I assume we can say the franchise for New Orleans is firm." "Well, it looks good, Hale, but you know it still has to be approved by the owners. I can't make any promises on my own." Boggs glared at Rozelle. Then he smiled and said, very deliberately, "Well, Pete, why don't you just go back and check with the owners? I'll hold things up here till you get back." Rozelle quickly decided he could indeed speak for the owners. "That's all right," he assured Boggs. "You can count on their approval."— July 9, 2015 4:23 a.m.
Hysteria won't build a stadium
So I'm trying to decide which NFL team I'm going to root for after the Chargers leave Buffalo is pretty far but given my name I'm thinking maybe the Bills would be the natural choice. What do you guys think? Are there other people here who root for the Chargers, and would love for them to stay, but are philosophically opposed to blatant corporate welfare such as publicly financed stadiums? Will you root for the LA Chargers? Or pick another team? I'm thinking maybe I'll go with the Bills.— July 8, 2015 10:24 p.m.
California's farm economy "ruined"
There is no standard definition of "drought". In my opinion the term has been overused in the past and has been a crutch for officials to not fix the problems with water supply, delivery, and regulation in CA. It's easier for a state official to just shrug their shoulders, say "well it's a drought I can't do anything about it. Everyone should just take shorter showers" than to actually solve difficult problems - like trying to modernize ancient water agreements and regulations.— July 3, 2015 7:04 p.m.

Pro golfer problems
I think that professional athletes who make millions of dollars per year would be unlikely to throw a game. I would think it goes on a lot more in amateur athletics like NCAA hoops and football.— July 1, 2015 3:10 a.m.
Pro golfer problems
OK so I'm proud to say that I'm NOT an expert on this but out of curiousity I started looking up the betting options for golf. Don's right about the head-to-head bets - there's something called match betting where you can in effect bet on one player against another player. But I did notice - at least on the first site that popped up in a google search - that there are already odds up for who will win the British Open but not for the match bets http://british-open-golf.betting-directory.com/ma…. So that suggests to me that the match bets might be a more obscure bet.— July 1, 2015 2:42 a.m.
