No Snapdragon, no problem for Samsung
It's tough to stay dominant in one market for an extended period of time. Intel has managed to do it with microprocessors by maintaining superiority in process and microprocessor architecture technology and by leveraging their monopoly position.— October 9, 2015 6:42 p.m.
Gov. Brown vetoes bills to reform utilities commission
If I read the voting record correctly, each of the 3 bills were passed UNANIMOUSLY by the assembly and the senate. Every single Democratic AND Republican legislator in the state (minus a few no-shows) voted in favor of stopping corruption in CPUC. EXCEPT BROWN http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billVotes… http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billVotes… http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billVotes… Will the CA legislature attempt to override the vetoes?— October 9, 2015 6:18 p.m.
No Snapdragon, no problem for Samsung
Theo Negri, a software engineer has attempted to start processing reported H1B salary data http://spectrum.ieee.org/view-from-the-valley/at-…. The data specific to QCOM are here http://data.jobsintech.io/companies/qualcomm-inco…. The database gives a good idea about number of hires and salaries; I don't know if there is any layoff data there.— October 9, 2015 2:06 p.m.
No Snapdragon, no problem for Samsung
Shimizu Randall: There is certainly hiring going on at many SD-area semiconductor companies - probably some software companies too but I'm not familiar with that industry. I don't know if there's enough hiring to absorb all of the QCOM layoff but there is definitely hiring going on.— October 9, 2015 9:58 a.m.
No Snapdragon, no problem for Samsung
But how will they get all their H1B applications through if Irwin doesn't hold a big political fundraiser at his La Jolla home from time to time?— October 9, 2015 9:24 a.m.
That Democrat-Republican split may help
This makes me want to hurl in a bucket.— October 9, 2015 6:23 a.m.
No Snapdragon, no problem for Samsung
The cell phone chip business is tough these days. As swell pointed out, QCOM faces competetion from its own customers (certainly Apple and Samsung, eventually perhaps Huawei, Xiaomi, ZTE and other second-tier smart-phone vendors). In addition there is tough competition from other semiconductor firms like INTC, Mediatek, Spreatrum. AND on top of that, the Chinese gov't has invested a zillion (zillion with a Z) dollars into semiconductor R&D so that eventually Chinese OEMs like smartphone vendors can buy more of their chips from Chinese semiconductor companies than American ones. As far as the licensing business goes eventually patents run out - and QCOM will most likely continue to fight multi-billion dollar legal battles in every corner of the world with countries and companies that don't like QCOM's licensing strategy. Small companies talk about "pivoting" a lot. A small company might start out with a vision to sell one thing but for some reason it doesn't work out so the company "pivots" to sell something new. Maybe QCOM needs to "pviot" to something new now - whether it's internet of things (IoT), smart vehicles, medical devices, something. I'm sure QCOM has people researching these markets as well as many others. They may have milked the cellphone chipset cow dry.— October 9, 2015 6:09 a.m.
Another echo from the dot-com bubble burst
Another bad pun / interesting business name: I find it odd that there is a major bank called "Rabobank" - sounds a bit like "Rob a bank" to me. I don't think the Dutch translated too well. A famous bad name when translated was the Chevy Nova (No va = no go in Spanish)— October 4, 2015 10:39 a.m.
Another echo from the dot-com bubble burst
It was actually a good pun; I was being slow...— October 2, 2015 7:40 p.m.
Another echo from the dot-com bubble burst
Hmm, I'm still trying to figure that one out.— October 2, 2015 4:41 p.m.
