San Diego’s convadium is a bald-faced lie
I think at the national level more sports talk show hosts are starting to become more vocally opposed to stadium subsidies. From the promo to Bill Simmons' new HBO sports show "I believe that billionaires should pay for their own f***ing football stadiums." But at the local level yes there is a strong sales pitch for the stadium and mocking of anyone who thinks a few extra potholes or an extra 4% on hotel bills should matter to anyone compared with the prospect of losing the Chargers.— June 30, 2016 12:40 p.m.
Tax-free stadium plan? Beware
The price is (at least) $1.15 billion dollars.— June 26, 2016 7:14 p.m.
Tax-free stadium plan? Beware
I don't think whether or not the Chargers stay is the biggest issue. I think there's a bigger question - whether or not a private entity can so brazenly leverage a monoply to demand public money. The system could be unrigged - Congress would have to overturn the NFL's absurd antitrust exemption and demand that the NFL re-split into 2 independently operated leagues each with their own expansion and contraction abilities.— June 26, 2016 2:42 p.m.
Tax-free stadium plan? Beware
Well this might be a tax-payer ripoff but if it is it's definitely a less obvious rip-off than the Convadium 1.15B rip-off. I've heard that when there are multiple initiatives regarding the same issue, the more ballot measures there are regarding an issue, the more confused voters become and the more likely voters just vote NO. So one more initiative is probably a good thing IMO because it will make it less likely that the Convadium (clearly a tax-payer rip off) would pass.— June 24, 2016 6:39 p.m.
Florida subsidy orgy over?
Where does Craig Venter fit in to all this - he seems to be planning or has started a lot of new biotech ventures in San Diego. Does he have FL ties as well?— June 14, 2016 2:58 p.m.
Signature-gatherer falsely claims petition will save Comic-Con
The argument that one should sign the petition even if one is opposed just "to have the question on the ballot" is part of the signature-gatherer's standard spiel. I have to admit I've fallen for it once or twice in the distant past, then after some thought I realized what a stupid argument it is. Supposedly some of the measure supporters pay $10-$12 per valid signature to the gatherers.— June 3, 2016 5:44 p.m.
Chula Vista deemed the worst staycation spot
I agree - sounds like a nice staycation to me.— June 1, 2016 4:27 p.m.
Chula Vista deemed the worst staycation spot
Well personally I think the Del Mar Fair is great - besides the rides and carnival games and fair food there are a lot of great exhibits - art, argriculture, gems, woodworking, etc. I'm sure fairs in more agricultural areas have better agricultural exhibits. But I'd be willing to be no other fair has the ocean view from the Ferris Wheel that DM Fair has. DM Fair is #6 nationwide in terms of fair attendance FWIW - doesn't sound like a joke to me. http://www.carnivalwarehouse.com/lists/2015list.p…— June 1, 2016 4:33 a.m.
Chula Vista deemed the worst staycation spot
I think the rankings would make more sense if they were by metropolitan area than by city. I think Chula Vistans might staycation in the city of San Diego.— May 31, 2016 8:33 p.m.
County unemployment rate keeps falling
I'm certainly no hotel expert but the basic question I would have is - if a 4% increase in the total bill to hotel customers doesn't hurt business then why don't the hotels just raise their rates 4%? The NFL has definitely been awarding SB's to cities for building new stadiums but I would think eventually fans will want to travel to traditional winter vacation spots - So Cal, New Orleans, Florida. We'll see.— May 23, 2016 8:17 p.m.
