Raiders apply for a Las Vegas trademark
If their stadium is payed for with public funds they should be re-branded the "Public Funds Raiders". I wonder if anyone has trademarked that...— August 26, 2016 8:23 p.m.
"The Chargers are cheap and manipulative"
That's a great observation. I think a lot of people like the Spanos family think about debts and obligations solely in terms of leverage. These people aren't bothered by pesky things like ethical or moral obligations - they will pay someone only if that person has some means to force them to pay them. In Bosa's case if he signs a contract to defer part of his signing bonus and then if Spanos later didn't want to pay him all that he's owed, Bosa would have a big powerful union behind him and plenty of legal representation willing to take on a 7 or 8 figure case. If the stadium initiative goes through I don't think the city will hold much leverage to force Spanos and the NFL to adhere to anything they're promising - unless everything has been promised clearly and simply in writing.— August 25, 2016 3:03 p.m.
"The Chargers are cheap and manipulative"
It's a big long shot that the stadium initiative would pass but it's quite likely that the Chargers will be asking other NFL owners or the league for something in the near future. It behooves the Chargers to act in the interests of the other NFL owners by not setting any precedents which might hurt the other owners in their future negotiations.— August 25, 2016 9:40 a.m.

"The Chargers are cheap and manipulative"
Kurtenbach is flat out lying. The Chargers ARE offering Bosa about $25M - I'm pretty sure that's all guaranteed - including a guaranteed $17M signing bonus. The disputes are over how much of the signing bonus gets paid up front and over "offset" language - meaning if the Chargers release him and another team signs him then Bosa wants to "double-dip" and get paid by both teams. The Chargers do not want to change their precedent of not offering offset language nor fully up-front bonus payments too anyone and they are negotiating tough with Bosa. Maybe the Chargers are being too tough and would have been better off just signing him but I can understand their position. I do not understand Bosa's position. He does not have that much leverage. If the Chargers don't sign Bosa they'll miss him but they will move on. If Bosa doesn't sign then he would have to re-enter the draft in 2017 and most likely get picked much lower than #3 overall and make much less money. Bosa has already done a lot more harm to his football career and reputation than the amount of money in dispute would possibly justify. I don't understand it. My guess is that Bosa has been unduly influenced by an agent hoping to make a name for himself and a mob-connected family with a history of tough negotiation but NFL busts.— August 25, 2016 9:34 a.m.
Taxpayers association thumbs down Chargers proposal

San Diego taxpayers to be Chargers laughingstock?
There are a few events. The city isn't going to just the stadium go idle - that would be stupid. These stadiums are mostly for the use of the teams - maybe 80% or 90%? The fact that there are some other uses of the stadium is over-exaggerated by the sports teams. (Like my use of Lochte-ish "over-exaggerated")?— August 21, 2016 4:51 p.m.

Fundamentally I will agree to disagree with your inference that a huge improvement to the stadium is a necessity. If you want to stay structural repairs, plumbing replacement, electrical work are necessities those are reasonable argument. If you want to say moving seats is a necessity that's not reasonable in my opinion. I honestly don't even see your argument. Do people have worse vision than they did 50 years ago? Have the players gotten smaller? Has the ball gotten smaller than 50 years ago? Why is it a necessity to have better seats than there were originally?— August 21, 2016 3:25 p.m.

aardvark I'm opposed to the city spending ANY money to subsidizing an NFL team. But I wouldn't be as outraged if the Chargers didn't expect a huge upgrade as a "necessity", as you seem to be characterizing it. It's like the Chargers have use of a Toyota with 100,000 miles on it that needs a few repairs - and rather than just having the city pay for those repairs done they insist on getting a brand new top of the line Mercedes-Benz. A huge improvement isn't a necessity in my opinion. Apparently in your opinion it is.— August 21, 2016 3:18 p.m.
San Diego taxpayers to be Chargers laughingstock?
I definitely agree with Don (well I usually do on the stadium matters). Having better seating locations, luxury boxes, etc should not be considered "necessities". Necessities mean any repairs or renovations needed to make the stadium safe and clean - necessary repair / replacement of any support structures, replace / repair any electrical / gas / plumbing that's not in perfect condition, make sure everything is painted and clean, replace any damaged or worn out seats. If I'm not mistaken the cost for all that was estimated to be in the 100M - 200M range.— August 21, 2016 9:16 a.m.
