I'll just make this point again. I like pro sports. I hope the Chargers stay here. I hope the Padres stay here. I just don't think it's an appropriate use of tax dollars to subsidize those teams. And I think that "win-win" analyses purporting to demonstrate that tax dollars spent on sports teams end up saving tax money in the long run are deeply flawed.— October 14, 2013 2:01 p.m.

San Diego is a lot farther from the "center of mass" of college basketball than Indianapolis or Atlanta. Most Final 4 teams tend to come from the midwest or Atlantic coast. And in early April a lot of places have decent weather so the weather in San Diego wouldn't be as big a draw as it is during football bowl season. I'd bet we could get at least one Final 4 here if there was a wonderful expensive facility and a big push for it but I wouldn't count on San Diego being considered a great place for a recurring Final 4 site.— October 10, 2013 9:08 p.m.

The Olympics would be the mother of all corporate welfare projects - a few developers making tons of money, a few nice new buildings here and there, a boost in tourism for a couple of years. Then a 30-year economic hangover trying to cope with the back-breaking debt. Seems quite unlikely to happen however. I think 300/1 is too high. I think we've reached the point where the income gap has gotten too big and we need to tweak the tax code (or do something) to lessen this ratio. CEOs' incentives lead them to make very short-term decisions and/or manipulate data to look good to Wall Street, at the expense of long term planning.— October 5, 2013 1:24 p.m.

Yes that's what I see as the big problem with all this. Reduction of American engineering salaries affects engineers like me but might not have a big impact on all Americans. If America loses it's technical leadership that will have a big impact on America as a whole. You are absolutely correct. I think the universities (often in partnership with large corporations who benefit directly from the research) are even worse at exploiting foreign labor than corporations like QCOM. Grad students and Post-docs are in many ways an extremely low-cost (relative to skill level) labor pool. In the long run all of the temporary visa programs are helping to train foreign nationals to be experts in industries which the U.S. has leadership positions.— October 2, 2013 6:33 a.m.

The conclusion is that there is no crisis - it's been driven by a combination of panic and powerful groups who benefit from an excess of STEM workers.— October 1, 2013 10:46 p.m.
San Diego bicyclists get state protection from aggro drivers
I think rational, people do tend to get angry any time the driver of another vehicle shows a clear lack of respect for their time and/or safety. If there are 2 cars driving 60 mph down a freeway with 2 lanes, for example, I find this irritating and I do tend to get angry. I do all I can to avoid doing anything dangerous - tailgating or dangerous passing. But I cannot deny that in situations when I am driving and the operator of another vehicle is impeding me without an obvious reason I do tend to get irritated - as do most people. On the other hand, when I ride a bike I do all that I can to avoid impeding progress of other vehicles.— October 1, 2013 2:09 p.m.
