Major League Soccer eyeing San Diego market
Soccer is clearly a great game as billions of fans worldwide can't all be wrong. However, in the U.S. frankly many of us (myself included) find it boring to watch - and it's been that way for decades, even after decades of AYSO soccer. Most national sports pundits in the U.S. don't take soccer seriously - Jim Rome says "soccer is not a sport" and Dan Patrick allows a maximum of 5 seconds of his 3 hr radio show to be devoted to soccer. I think we're still not to the point where soccer will be a major sport in the U.S.— February 22, 2014 5:48 p.m.
Almost $82K salary buys a median-priced SD home
Yeah, come to think of it 200k is too high. But I would still say that a house with similar neighborhood and work commute in LA would be more expensive than in SD. Maybe 50K is more realistic.— February 21, 2014 10:19 p.m.
Almost $82K salary buys a median-priced SD home
I have little doubt that the statistics are correct. But I would say - admittedly based on anecdotal evidence and personal experience only - that L.A. is much more expensive than S.D. for a comparable middle class to upper middle class home. If your criteria are, let's say, 1500-2000 sq ft home, safe neighborhood, less than 45 min commute to work in downtown (or a major employment center in the city of LA or SD) I think this would cost at least 200K more in LA than SD. Traffic and topography are big issues in LA. If you work in downtown LA, or El Segundo, or somewhere like that, and want a nice affordable home you either have to drive WAY East or crawl through a densely packed mountain pass into the San Fernando or San Gabriel Valley.— February 20, 2014 4:39 p.m.
Chargers pushing for $700 million stadium in spite of city debt
Interesting article linking empires with using violent shows to distract from real issues. However I would say in my opinion, this is done on a much bigger level with the use of military force. While I have great respect for all of the brave and hard working men and women making sacrifices for the U.S. service, I must question whether the use of U.S. Military Force has been done for the right reasons. I'm not a dove. If use of military force is justified and in the best interests of America then I'm all for it. If American freedom is threatened than I'm all for annihilating our opponents. But I think any use of U.S. military force should only been done when it is morally justified (at least by some argument) and when it's in the best interests of the American people. To me, many (maybe even most) U.S. military actions in recent decades don't meet these criteria. I think the use of military action is sometimes motivated by political reasons similar to what you describe about Roman gladiator shows or American football distracting people from the real issues. Presidential approval ratings tend to go up sharply in wartime. Patriotic Americans rally around the country. By itself, this is a good thing. But I think this has been exploited by many U.S. leaders. War (at least in the initial stages) is good for approval ratings. And it diverts focus from domestic issues to international issues. Again, I have great respect for the brave and hard working men and women in our services. I just question the motivations of some of the upper, upper leadership.— February 14, 2014 7:37 a.m.
