All Things BBQ: Lightnin' Jack's
Ian, Historian Edward E. Dale wrote in 1947 that "People in the North often put sugar in corn bread, which Southerners have always asserted was one of the primary causes of the Civil War." And in a 19th century Virginia cookbook, it says "under no circumstances should a Cook so far depart from the good Judgment of Generations of Virginia Housewives as to permit Sugar in any variety of Corn Bread." Here's the recipe for classic Dixie cornbread: - **450-degree oven; greased 10-inch cast iron skillet** 1-1/2 cups white cornmeal 3 tablespoons flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 cups buttermilk 1 egg 2 tablespoons bacon drippings (or melted butter or margarine) Sift dry ingredients, add egg, buttermilk, fat. Mix gently just to evenly moisten. Bake in greased pan for 20 minutes. Serve hot or eat cold for breakfast next day!— January 21, 2014 7:02 a.m.
Off the record: city attorney and U-T reporters
I'm glad that you link JG to Tea Party thinking. He definitely has personal/family ties to that ilk.— January 17, 2014 8:33 a.m.
Off the record: city attorney and U-T reporters
Ricky Y seems to be peeved at something, eh? What's with the school-teacherish "In the past, I have asked you..."?? Yes sir! This is a straightforward article reporting facts obtained. It doesn't criticize , as the UT employee complains. I guess the feeling that the facts as they exist are "criticism" is based on the understanding of what the facts imply. As Aldous H said, *There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception.* And by the way, Goldsmith the Man is very transparent, but CA Goldsmith in the CA's Office is as transparent as La Jolla Cove when the sea lions are pissed.— January 17, 2014 8:26 a.m.
Wealthy Silberman clan backs Alvarez
The Silberman/Bersin/Foster family real-estate fortune includes a chunk of properties in the 2000 block of the east side of Logan Ave. Owners B & S LLC are among a number of well-heeled or well-known property owners on Logan Ave who had the privilege of saying "no thanks" to being included in the Barrio Logan MAD put together by Alvarez, Marco Li Mandri, and Shea developers. As Alvarez explained it, they'd rather take care of themselves. The amount the lucky excluded owners donated in this campaign is less than their assessments would be.— January 16, 2014 7:33 a.m.
Deep South arrives downtown
Forget fried chicken, shrimp and grits, angel food cake. Knowing something about southern cooking, that is not what epitomizes the south, and those are too tired, or are commonly available in many venues. For desserts, think lemon meringue pie, lemon bars, pineapple upside down cake, coconut cake, brownies with ice cream and caramel sauce, or chocolate pie. For entrees, think shrimp, asparagus, and hard-boiled egg/cheese casserole, or baked pork chops and collard greens and salty cornbread.— January 13, 2014 10:59 a.m.
North Park gang members indicted for sex trafficking
This is quite an amazing story. The release from the US Attorney's office has startling details. The number of people involved in North Park and the organized approach to cultivating a sense of identity within the group are shocking. Read the release here: http://www.justice.gov/usao/cas/press/2014/cas14-…— January 8, 2014 9:23 p.m.
Big money political event held quietly at Manchester resort
Great report. Funny how some people interpret straightforward inclusion of details on publicly available forms as bias and blindness. The requested and reported info is interesting, if nothing else. In this case, though, the important info is scary. Manchester is wooing and courting with the most radical, subversive, and stupidly evil people in the Republican party.— January 3, 2014 8:18 a.m.
San Diego's lobbyist accused of arranging illegal gifts

City attorney Goldsmith met with NASSCO shipbuilders
Good investigative reporting of what happened and how, who thinks what about it, and a related lawsuit. Not sure why some people don't want this reported... It's always good to know with whom the City Attorney meets. He doesn't post his meetings on the City Atty's webpage. I can assure you from first-hand experience that he does not meet with people who disagree with him, or vice versa. It's not hard to assume that he agrees with the actions and goals of those who manage to obtain a face-to-face. The public should know, and the *Reader* is where we go to find out. Thanks for the doing the footwork, Dorian.— December 22, 2013 11:19 a.m.
Lawyer notches third December takedown of city attorney
Another thing that the CA's office does, under instruction by JG, is provide written or oral "legal" advice or analysis for the Council, concerning issues under protest by citizens and Council district constituents. That advice is often political, flawed, and overtly intended only to give cover to councilmembers' votes on questionable processes or issues. It is quite shameful and should be an embarrassment to anyone who has ever been to law school.— December 13, 2013 7:28 a.m.
