U-T hypes long-delayed Manchester hotel plan
"Finest city." How original, Doug. Did you think that up on your own? Alas, the superlative must be restricted to describing the sweaty area within the borders of that grand Republic, because, after all, it's not really America there. Just ask Rick Perry.— May 22, 2014 5:19 p.m.
City can’t drag its heels any longer
Hey Hardcover, The PEOPLE didn't kill off anything: the courts did, because the MAD was created totally outside the law. If you believe that twisting the law into knots to serve your personal preference is OK, then go work for the city and Jan Goldsmith. If you want to spend what you were paying on your assessment, you can always donate money to Starbucks or other businesses. Just ask them to use the $$ to hire sidewalk cleaners and to place decorations outside on the streets in front of their stores. Residential properties may not be assessed on property tax bills for commercial private cleaning services, parties, banners, paint, computers, golf carts, expensive benches, exorbitantly priced fancy trashcans, free lunches, administrative salaries/health insurance, rent, utilities, phone bills, toilet paper, or a million other things that local business associations/nonprofit board members think they are entitled to have paid for by neighborhood residents. Their self-appointed roles as paid, private improvers for business owners can't be forced on residential owners. Oh yeah: it's not a "settlement": the city **lost a lawsuit** and has to pay attorney costs. They fought that and lost that, too. If this were a "settlement," say, for "damages" (as incorrectly reported by Dotinga in the Voice), the compensation would be much, much larger.— May 20, 2014 1:18 p.m.
Media cabal building political machine?
I'd say the machine is already up, running, and impregnable. Over the past decade, KFMB has slowly but surely shown increasingly biased reporting. In an obvious way. I wonder how the anchors feel about it. A few years ago my neighbor sent a complaint to one of KFMB's anchors about a blatantly biased (and useless and uninformative) anti-Obama "funny human-interest" segment. The reporter replied that the story was from a "national news feed" and that the story was done by a reporter out of Pennsylvania, not a local San Diego reporter. As if that mattered. Recently, a friend pointed out that if you read the crawls across local Channel 8's screen while the anchors are talking, you might think you were watching Fox or KUSI. I do *"believe that conservative donors undermine our journalism"* - they turn journalism and reporting into propaganda. There are no "liberal donors" with the national agenda and setup of the Kochs. And "liberals" have a tendency to reject misinformation and lies, so liberal propaganda wouldn't be likely to work, even if it existed at the organizational scope seen for the Koch groups and allies.— May 16, 2014 2:35 p.m.
This is not my zereshk polo
What a nice-looking place. I'd like to try it. Can you describe a bit more what was wrong with your zereshk polo? By lacking "cohesiveness," do you mean that the rice didn't have the textural quality that you prefer? Or, if it was lacking in flavor, how so? What do barberries taste like? Do you know where can they be purchased in San Diego?— May 5, 2014 4:40 p.m.
Gumbo on the run
Sounds good. And when you want to economize and make your own, do what I do: From Amazon (eligible for free shipping if you have Prime), get 12 boxes of the best gumbo base in the world, Zatarain's, for $22: http://www.amazon.com/Zatarains-Orleans-Style-Gum… I use a third of a pkg for two people and cut water accordingly; just add water, five or six boneless/skinless chicken thighs, 10 shrimp, sausage, and diced eggplant and tomatoes (I don't mess with okra, and believe me, you don't need to). Cheap. Cook some rice. You're good to go. These boxes can be stored and used over years, or have a big gumbo party and use more than one box per every few months. It's delicious. I bet lots of restaurants use this base.— May 4, 2014 5:54 p.m.
House at 1619 J Street historical? Guffaw.
Burwell, It's not that Navarra has too much money, rather it's that he has too much insider influence. He is a big supporter of Republican candidates and cabals, of the DTSD Partnership, of infill, of the of East Village and Barrio Logan business ruling business class, of privatization moves made and planned, ... and so on. Whereas there was no problem ruining the development plan of the previous owner of this house, not gonna happen when Mr. Insider wants to make some money. Like you, I swore years ago never to help enrich Navarra. Not that he's ever sold anything that I wanted.— May 2, 2014 4:36 p.m.
Clinton records shed light on Filner, Bersin
Really. Filner is the best of these, politically. The others are gamers and/or tools.— May 1, 2014 7:49 p.m.
No pot in Rachel’s lobby
I love how The Rach is mute on this neat little report in the otherwise totally commented-upon reality in which she lives every minute. How absolutely perfect, for all that she does, as she floats from one political paycheck to the other: not resulting from or achieved through deliberate planning. Maybe Sanders will find her useful again someday.— May 1, 2014 4:11 p.m.
Manchester gets his man on planning commission
Pat F, Well, probably not. The Dems who dumped on Filner, a true-blue old-school Dem, aren't the kind of Dem who ever sees the folly of our local Repubs. These willfully blind mongrel Dems are the New Democrat type, multiplied x100 in our setting = do whatever it takes to keep in the good graces of the Repubs who call the shots. They are next to useless to a true Democrat, and often do a lot of harm. You don't need Manchester's proxy on the Planning Commission to know what the plan is. Perfect credentials: Petco, CCDC. Carry on, plunderers. Nobody here to stop you.— April 28, 2014 4:44 p.m.
San Diego officials shut down ballot measure to give public more access
Excellent journalism and investigation. "*[W]hat seemed like a gratuitous stall pretext*" is the way Sanders and Goldsmith always operated with the help of loyal department heads, and Goldsmith continues, with Faulconer *et al*. Goldsmith's default control move on anything not on his or his allies' agenda is to warn of potential litigation. He has no problem, however, giving the nod to agenda actions that are illegal and DO lead to litigation, which the City eventually loses in court at taxpayer expense. Worst tea-bag City Attorney ever. If you could know him behind the scenes, and know the political ideology that he and his tea-bag Republican friends and sibling hold dear, you'd gag. His actions as attorney make it pretty clear.— April 25, 2014 8:41 a.m.
