great blogs to read
Can the web admin sort this problem out for Jon ? I would hate to lose another sensible person on the site. Is the Reader trying to slim down entries or this a computer problem ? Inquiring minds want to know.— July 16, 2010 8:44 p.m.
$3000 Worth of Bench
Pepsi might get jealous as it is the recognized soft drink for San Diego. I think all of the parks in the city deserve these benches. The city celebrates diversity and non discrimination. So we all should get a hardwood bench or three at our local parks.— July 16, 2010 8:13 a.m.
Raccoon Wars
Raccoons are scary because of the rabies they carry. I had no idea that they were related to weasels and wolverines. Thanks for the information. Since we live unarmed here on the Ponderosa, our opportunities for raccoon eradication are limited. But as one said, it keeps us out of the clink or needing to flee across the border.— July 15, 2010 5:31 p.m.
Raccoon Wars
If you keep fish out of the pond as I have, the problems will decrease. Occasionally a raccoon will leave evidence (paw prints) of a midnight drinking bout. I have had gophers also drown in my pond. I guess that the water attracts thirty varmints. Over the years I have seen opossums, skunks, coyotes, and a red tailed fox in the neighborhood. Red shouldered and red tailed hawks plus kestrels and hummingbirds are also around on a regular basis. Once a swarm of bees came up from the canyon and stayed for about a day on a large bush. Then they moved on to a new location. That was impressive to say the least.— July 15, 2010 2:52 p.m.
$3000 Worth of Bench
Sweet. The recreation centers have reduced hours but the City can pay for $3000 benches. Who is kidding who here ?— July 15, 2010 1:27 p.m.
Backed-Up Toilets
The City of San Diego has provided free portable toilets (23 on July 4) for all of the drinkers and other park users at Kate Sessions Neighborhood Park. Before this event the park and recreation department had the most expensive portable toilets which include an outside sink available on Lamont Street for the weekend crowds. But the City cannot in its infinite wisdom help the homeless ? There is something about human dignity which is lost on the decision makers when the drunks with cars get the portable toilets at taxpayers' expense and the least among us get nothing. Reports have it that the drinkers on July 4 also used the bushes at Kate Sessions Neighborhood Park which does have permanent bathrooms but not enough for 4,500 park users.— July 15, 2010 1:18 p.m.
Raccoon Wars
The Julian raccoon encounter was over 20 years ago when video was not that common.— July 15, 2010 12:49 p.m.
Raccoon Wars
Sometimes the little or no so little bandits come up on my deck and use the outside water dish to wash their paws. You can see their prints on the wood and gauge the size of the night visitors. We were visiting friends in Julian one summer. After a peaceful walk in the woody hood, everyone was relaxing inside the cabin. It was dark and still until a god awful racket started up on the roof. Upon close inspection with a powerful flash light we saw numerous raccoons having a big fight. It went on until it was over because as some of us know, raccoons leave when raccoons want to leave and not one minute sooner.— July 15, 2010 10:15 a.m.
None
Josh Board was before my time but I understood that he was banned as some have been since and may be in the future. It is a tight little world of writers with many secret alliances and equally undercover campaigns to oust or keep certain contributors. There seem to be "followers" of certain regular bloggers who either damn with no praise (not even faint praise) or give rave reviews no matter what the quality of the written work is. Probably one could use a play book to understand what is really happening here in Readerville. Just my 2 cents.— July 15, 2010 9:19 a.m.
Raccoon Wars
The resident spouse tried to save his grape crop with a blast of water that night. I had forgotten that part of the story. All he got was a beady stare from our four midnight snackers and a lot of frustration. I am not sure if raccoons will eat fruit off the trees. I don't believe this has happened yet at our house. Raccoons are the biggest carriers of rabies if I remember correctly so that is another good reason to leave them alone. I have heard of people keeping a raccoon as a pet. I will stick to keeping them far far away from me and hoping the Davy Crockett hats come back into fashion.— July 15, 2010 8:50 a.m.
