Army sergeant comes back to San Diego from Afghanistan
In the bygone 1960's era some went to Canada, others hid in graduate school and many answered the call to serve. I suppose if a person was deferred because their job was essential to the war effort, it would count. I personally don't think building military machinery is the same as actual military service. There is something which changes a person who has gone through basic training and officers' school which cannot be replicated in any other fashion. Again citizens can serve when there is no draft if they choose to do so. "Land of the free because of the brave" doesn't seem to encompass anything about manning a drill press in a factory, does it ? Our former Vice President helped the military/industrial complex, never served a day in the military and look where his efforts have gotten our country.— June 18, 2010 1:27 p.m.

Where are the copy editors when we need them to correct incorrect usage of the English language ? Also who does not use spell check these days ? Maybe the strange sentence construction and bad spelling is some obscure form of Middle English known to a few and used by even fewer so called writers ?— June 18, 2010 11:47 a.m.

Thanks for setting the record straight. The same stringer also took liberties with the account of the Community Parks 1 meeting where the volunteers unanimously supported a 24 hour alcohol ban at Kate Sessions Neighborhood Park. Because this stringer has been taken to task by some, she has resorted to violating SD Reader policies numerous times as it relates to printing names of bloggers who choose to be anonymous and even invited readers to contact her offsite for more information about one person. Many feel that it time for this person to be banned from the site. I hope that the Administration upholds the Terms of Use and considers this step. It sets a bad example to let a flagrant disregard of Reader stated policies to continue.— June 18, 2010 11:31 a.m.

Spouses of military also serve by taking care of families when the military person is overseas or on duty. It is not an easy life. The mandatory service for 2 years is a good idea in my opinion.— June 18, 2010 11:24 a.m.

I am fearful that only a chump could/would chump at the bit.— June 18, 2010 11:20 a.m.

Great bumper sticker on a WW2 veteran's car - LAND OF THE FREE BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. No one can take credit for another's service but KUDOS to those who have served or are serving. Why don't the Dear Readers want to explore WMD lie and why we are in Irag under false pretenses ?— June 18, 2010 8:56 a.m.

"Alternative spellings champ at the bit [edit]Etymology Variation of champ at the bit, recasting it as chomp "to chew noisily" + bit "part of a horse's harness held in its mouth"; horses tend to chew on their bits when impatient at waiting. [edit]Verb to chomp at the bit (third-person singular simple present chomps at the bit, present participle chomping at the bit, simple past and past participle chomped at the bit) (intransitive) To show impatience or frustration when delayed. [edit]Usage notes Informal usage and technically incorrect; the more common form in formal English is champ at the bit."— June 18, 2010 8:13 a.m.

I meant chomping as in using big incisors to take a bite out of the person in power. Literary license.— June 17, 2010 4:43 p.m.
