Tour de Cheesesteak: stage 3
Although a chain, I find Jersey Mike's Big Kahuna the best cheese steak in the land. #2 for me is Philly Frank's in San Marcos. Philly Franks is often rated top 2 in various rankings FYI.— November 29, 2012 10:07 a.m.
My Beer Radar - ¡Uno!
I can understand why master brewers don't last at La Jolla Brewhouse. The owner is horrible! I got in an unfortunate debate with her about a $8 coupon once that they would not honor and her manner was despicable. Hope that guy has some sort of ownership stake to survive working with her.— November 15, 2012 11:07 a.m.
Pak resigns: Orchestra Nova
Wow. This is potentially devastating to Orchestra Nova. They really did an amazing job the last 2 years in building a quality program and brand and at a low cost to the patron. The costs to attend were the cheapest for this caliber of quality entertainment I have ever found in SD. They finally sold out all the performances too and now this. I hope this does not set them back or end this great program.— October 17, 2012 11:02 a.m.
Penny Stock Brokerage Disciplined
Penny stock brokerages are still around??? I must be naive. I've been in financial services for over 20 years and I thought these guys died out in the 90's. Dont get me wrong, I know the 'touts' are out there, but a full blown penny stock firm? There are so many regulatory hoops now to get thru I am surprised they are able to operate.— February 8, 2012 11:07 a.m.
Movie Theatres to Encourage Texting?
I notice in all Ultrastar theaters the usher announces to all to please 'silence' their phones during the movie but they say nothing about not texting. It is extremely annoying when someone in your vicinity texts and has the light from their phone going off all movie long. It happens all the time now to the point I would rather wait for the Blu Ray to come out than endure some ill mannered inconsiderate. It is a horrible distraction and people who do it are some seriously malfunctioned people!— December 6, 2011 10:20 a.m.
Oklahoma City: Who Knew?
I absolutely agree with your recommendations. Oklahoma City has alot to see and experience. The Cowboy Museum is fascinating even if you do not have an interest in such things. Amazing statues/sculptures around it.— November 30, 2011 11:26 a.m.
So Much for Blanca Part Two
I do not mind what it takes to be considered a fine restaurant and I know what a fine restaurant is, but this one really fell short in one area--portion size. I get that portions are typically small in fine dining places but this one took it to a whole new level. You cannot charge someone $40 and give them the equivalent of 4 bites of food. It cannot be done. Also they seemed to have a schtick with selling big size Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and serving it in can on coasters. That sort of LA-ish cheese doesn't really wash around here "IMO".— October 21, 2011 11:51 a.m.
Orchestra Nova Classics Season Debuts 10/22 & 10/24
This article captures the Orchestra Nova experience perfectly. My wife and I went last year and found it to be a fantastic experience. Even if you do not like classical music generally, the acoustics are so amazing in Qualcomm Hall that you will appreciate the music like you never have before. We subscribed this year we liked it so much last season. And you cannot beat the price for a night out! Give it a shot.— October 18, 2011 2:38 p.m.
Law Bans "Open Carry" of Handguns
Glad to hear this! I am a gun owner but most of the guys I see taking advantage of open carry are a bunch of wannabe tough guys, wannabe law enforcement, and attention seeking cowboys! They ruined it for the others in my opinion. It doesn't just make local police uneasy but the mass citizenry as well. Nothing like standing next to someone with an openly displayed weapon, not knowing whether it is loaded or not, as they struggle to coherently put together a coffee order.— October 12, 2011 9:49 a.m.
Dogs Poisoned in Ocean Beach
Non stop barking dogs will drive people insane! If you never had to live next to a non stop yapping/barking dog, you do not know the measure it takes on your mental well being. And there are people that own these pets that do not care to do anything about it. They think its your problem! And if the owners are intimidating then some people will not want to go on record. I am not condoning the poisoning of any animal, let alone family pets like dogs, but I always think of that common issue when I read stories like this. Clearly I would look to the neighbors as my first suspects.— September 28, 2011 9:31 a.m.
