The Cathryn Beeks Appreciation Concert
Cathryn is the one (nearly 10 years ago now!) that truly introduced me to San Diego's vast local music scene, and quite literally changed my life forever. Through her, I found hundreds and hundreds (maybe thousands by now) of bands and solo artists playing their own music. Music that is very different, and better (imho) than at least 75% of commercial music you hear on radio and TV. I rarely listen to radio these days, except for the local music shows...many of which weren't around 10 years ago (is there some connection?). Cathryn herself is one of those artists whose music I find so fantastic. She writes great songs and performs them with a beautiful, powerful, soulful voice. Through her tireless efforts, she's made it "ok" to play original music at more than just coffeehouses and open mics. I will always be grateful to her, and love her for that.— October 20, 2011 10:59 a.m.
Rob Deez -- Seth Combs (Grizzly Version)
What a great idea! Deez has it nailed. Keep 'em comin'.— March 9, 2011 3:01 p.m.
Let the SonicBidding Begin
I take issue with having to sign on with an EPK service (exclusively SonicBids, in this case) to even be considered. There are other services available...why just SonicBids? Why not a self-produced EPK? I also take issue with actually having to pay *anything* to play an event, ESPECIALLY IndyFest. Of all entities to understand the independent artist's position, IndyFest should be first. I understand there's a high cost in putting on such an event (an excellent one, imo), but requiring an artist to pay for SonicBids, or anything else...then MAYBE having them play for free, is just wrong. At this level, it's actually kind of petty. The economic woes that have hit IndyFest so hard, hit those independent artists first. Still, I believe most up and coming artists wouldn't mind playing for free, as long as it didn't cost them anything. If you truly value independent music and musicians, you wouldn't mind paying for them. If you can't pay them, then at least don't charge them.— September 23, 2010 4:25 a.m.
Happy Ron Hill -- Happy Ron's Version of Famous Former Neighbors
Happy Ron's got my vote!— March 5, 2010 4 p.m.
The City Needs Me
I agree, San Diego NEEDS Gregory Page. He's an amazingly talented, diverse songwriter and performer. He's had a major impact and influence on everyone that's ever taken the chance to attend one of his shows. What few seem to understand is that it takes money to be able to continue performing and/or producing CDs. Sometimes a LOT of money. I applaud Athenaeum's policy of paying artists...a rarity in San Diego. But, because of the rarity of pay and the very close margin artists operate on, I don't think a commission for CD sales is appropriate or in keeping with their general policy of support for local music. Part and parcel of that support is to attempt to keep the artists able to continue producing their art. It amazes me that the majority of people I've seen buying CDs at a show, balk at $10...and walk away at $15. If an artist raises the price of their CDs to cover your commission, they will surely lose overall sales.— August 26, 2009 5:51 p.m.
Fromness
I'm from Escondido. I live in the house I came home to when I was born. My answer depends on where, why and whom is asking the question. If I don't think they'll recognize Escondido, I'll just say San Diego or Southern California. I disagree with the idea that everyone asks the question just "...for information to help you shape your opinion of them.". Simply because your opinion of someone develops as you spend time around that person, regardless if you talk to them or not and regardless of where you're from. In my opinion, the minimum reason to ask the question is to show an interest in having a conversation. It's an ice-breaker...everyone comes from somewhere. As far as judging people without the facts? People do it all the time...without a care as to where they're from. We start judging others as soon as we see them. We see how they look, how they walk, their facial expression, their color, their demeanor. When they get in range, we smell them, detect their pheromones. All this information constantly affects our assessment of the person. We use stereotypes as a reference...they are often wrong and typically apply to everyone at some point, but we use them anyway. The evaluation continues as we interact with the person, even if it's someone we've known for years. It's a basic survival instinct to be aware of our surroundings, whom we're around and judge our situation. To know where someone is from is just "interesting". Just sayin' ;^)— July 1, 2009 8:46 p.m.
Worst of the Worst
The comments here, impress me with how much blame is being placed vs. responsibility being taken. As far as this article goes, Brayden is the only one that expresses any role the bands and/or the audience may have had in things getting out of hand. I don't know anything about the incident beyond this article, but I admire Brayden for recognizing, and saying that his perception was different "after sobering up".— May 8, 2009 10:24 p.m.
Josh Damigo and Rob Deez
Very "short bus" kind of guys. But fun and talented anyway!— May 8, 2009 9:07 p.m.
