One-fourth of SD employment tied to federal government
It might be helpful to have the employment numbers. Percentages can be misleading when comparing small markets like Co. Springs with a much larger employment base such as SD has. I would venture to say that government employment , federal, state, local, irect and indirect, is probably close to 50% of all jobs in SD. The County employs over 16 K, the City about 10K then add in all the military Border Patrol and the contractors employed by the government. When people say they want to cut government jobs I don't think they realize what an impact that would have on the local economy.— November 18, 2013 4:58 p.m.
One-fourth of SD employment tied to federal government
That's 1/4 of all the jobs in SD which has a much larger employee base than say Co. Springs. It also does not include state and local government employment much of which is dependent on federal funds.— November 17, 2013 4:10 p.m.
Warren Buffet, Doug Manchester, Tom Gores buy newspapers
Paywalls really don't work. Newspapers have to let users view at some level (5-10 articles per month) or they won't get many online readers and anyone with a little internet savvy knows how to get past those limitations. It takes me about two minutes to read what I want to on the UT (some days less) and maybe a bit longer on the Wa. Post & NYTimes. Most of the news of the day is freely available on CNN or other sites. NY Times ads on TV boast of their coverage of happenings in NYC but unless you live there who cares? Comparing online revenues to print doesn't really make sense. Online only news does not have the costs associated with printing a daily paper and should be profitable with lower revenues. In a few more years print editions will be the buggy whips of the 21st century.— November 15, 2013 2:37 p.m.
Study says City of San Diego underfunding health benefits
If the city is underfunding retiree healthcare I wonder where the funds that should be going to healthcare are going? Petco Park, the new Library????— November 14, 2013 12:25 p.m.
City faces lawsuit over condos' defective pipes
I worked in the basement of the County Administration building on Pacific Hwy in the late 90's. Periodically we would get a blast of sewage odor thru the open windows. We were finally able to determine the source as sewer gas being vented through charcoal filters in 55 gallon drums which had never been maintained. I always thought that this must leave a bad impression on any tourists in the area.— November 10, 2013 12:35 p.m.
UCSD conceals Fletcher's reason for graduating five years late
Also makes you wonder how someone with credentials that thin managed to get a #100+K job at Qualcomm. Oh, never mind, Mr. Jacobs owns that too!— October 29, 2013 12:24 p.m.
Detroit's "laughable" pension tomfoolery akin to San Diego's
Let's not forget that the city was not only removing excess funds to sweeten benefits, it was also using excess funds for the Republican National Convention, the Padres expansion of the convention center all projects for folks with plenty of their own money. Detroit is now planning to build a new sports facility with public funds while paying pensioners pennies on the dollar.— October 24, 2013 1:41 p.m.
Cyclist files suit against City for creating a "dangerous concealed trap" for cyclists
I suppose it would be asking too much for the cyclists to organize sections of bike lanes maintained by themselves similar to the highway adoption programs. You could make the same complaints about almost any section of road in the city used by autos. "defective design, defective signage, defective bicycle lane, bicycle route and/or path, defective traffic control devices, defective pavement lane markings, street marking, street width, speed limit, defective line of sight, defective and/or non-existent warning signage, and/or devices— October 16, 2013 12:29 p.m.
County funds new access point to Otay Valley Regional Park
And Todd Gloria was there because.....? I believe he is the interim mayor of San Diego, not Chula Vista. Any conflict of interest for Greg Cox who just happens to be married to the actual mayor of Chula Vista?— October 15, 2013 3:28 p.m.
Non-union workers to blast project labor agreements today
I agree that these projects should be paid for with private capital.— October 10, 2013 2:58 p.m.
