Don, I've been communicating with you, studying and thinking about our historical failures and our failures to evolve emotionally beyond the chimpanzee for over a decade now, and in my entire lifetime which includes WWII I have never seen American politics so chaotic and destructive. There is absolutely no such thing as compromise in Washington today, and politicians are controlled by the power of money that is destroying the latest, greatest democracy in history. The culture of hate that dominates politics and society today is beyond belief, we have totally failed to take advantage of the best education, economic opportunities and quality of life in history and we are destroying the future because we have totally failed to heed the lessons of history and continuously fail to meet the challenges of change even though many historians, philosophers and social scientists have warned us over and over again. At this point in history, greed is not the main problem, HATE is the problem that is making it impossible for the human race to survive in this new century, in an age of out of control overpopulation, degrading resources and accelerating climate changes. Print media is dying because people don't want to spend time reading and thinking and solving problems, educational institutions have failed to improve our society because they too have been subverted by the power of money, and there are so many thousand Christian denominations and sects that even Jesus would give up on us because we totally failed to even practice what he preached in his Sermon on the Mount, so many social hatreds throughout our history remain today are still destroying us from within. Thanks again Don, many times over for your excellent reality checks. I agree that capitalism is the best economic system in history but oligarchs and politicians keep putting it into the decline and fall mode with their destructive greed so we have to work very hard to save it. It's time for another Paul Samuelson, you might do capitalism a favor by producing a special blog (maybe on the Reader to start with San Diegans first) to inform us about historical perspectives and warnings, and motivate us to fight back to protect American capitalism and democracy for future generations. I know that's a hell of a huge request, but there is no one else making the right things happen in America today and we desperately need a new champion to help us save ourselves from us (Pogo said something like - we have seen the enemy and he is us). Don, very good description of our greatest cultural threat. The Golden Rule never had a chance to save us from ourselves as long as the paramount cultural value practiced and preached by our educational aristocracy is Greed. That continues to be one of the greatest lessons in history that we never learn, even when we at most peril of another decline and fall as we are again today. Excellent history lesson Don, we must never forget the lessons of history, however it is an entirely different thing for societies to try and prevent the mistakes of the past from continually destroying our future as population, poverty, global warming, politics of hate and other factors overwhelm the declining numbers of opportunities we may have left. I hope that scholars and communicators such as yourself can educate and motivate us to turn things around before we lose too many opportunities. Maybe San Diego intellectuals, including all the social scientists at our universities and colleges in San Diego, can figure out a way to meet all the challenges of rapid changes we are experiencing and show the rest of the world how to make the right things happen. If republicans and their SuperPAC bosses would stop exporting American manufacturing and jobs the unemployment rates in San Diego, California and across America would be a lot lower. Greed is the only thing that can destroy American Democracy and the republicans are the greediest in the world regardless of consequences to present and future quality of life that they are destroying by shutting down American Democracy in Washington today. Editorials on the Front Page is turning the U-T into a new version of Der Sturmer, used as a propaganda tool for overthrowing German Democracy before WWII. Manchester sounds like he wants to run Issa in 2016, like his role model Murdoch wanted to run General Petraeus in 2012. Puerile doesn't really sound strong enough, unless you are really saying that the U-T editors have devolved into juvenile delinquents under the Manchester dictatorship.— May 15, 2013 4:01 p.m.

Manchester has been turning the U-T into an ultra-right wing journal ever since he published the full page ad for "2016" which was the GOP's racial attack propaganda movie against Obama during the 2012 presidential election campaign. Note that the word "HATE" was featured in the ad using extra large, bold red letters: http://2016themovie.com/ And Manchester's Editorial Page now uses the Goebbels Manual of Style emphasizing daily deranged rant rhetoric using the “big lie” tactic in which a lie, no matter how outrageous, is repeated often enough that it will eventually be accepted as truth.— May 15, 2013 1:11 p.m.
